1 TOPCON Directions MUST HAVE: Verizon Hotspot [MiFi], antenna with pole, handheld data collector TOPCON, Bluetooth GPS Unit 1 Power On Hold button 1+ seconds Power button will flash green, turning off when startup is complete Raise the pole to the 2 meter mark and tighten Power Off Hold button 3 5 seconds. All LEDS turn off; Battery LED will be solid red CAUTION: Holding the power button seconds will erase all files. 2 Tracking Status (Or: Do I have a satellite connection?) Blinking indicates data is being written to memory Solid light indicates no data being recorded. Alternating green and red indicates files are being deleted LED off: missing or faulty memory. Solid blue Bluetooth connection is established Green is charged more than 50%. 3 Start-Up Turn on TOPCON Once the data collector, hotspot and antennae are turned on, the first screen a message of the GPS data collector should appear that you are connected to the Verizon Hotspot. The Bluetooth light will turn blue, and the Kirkwood Network will show. Click on the Magnet Field GPS button in the tray, which is rather slow to open. On the Connections Screen Take defaults Click the connect button Connections will initiate. Screen will show two boxes in the upper left corner. Check mark will show once the connection is made. Rover image will appear in the top left Home Screen Once connected click home Click jobs to open Click Open Job Scroll to find the correct job Click the green arrow E:\How-To Directions\TOPCON Directions-KCC.docx 3

4 Collecting Points Click the collect button. o Place the pole on surface o Make sure the pole is level o Hit the green check mark If you are gathering more than one point, the unit will automatically add a number. Navigate To go to a specific point that has already been located: i.e., find a valve You will need to find the number of the feature that you wish to locate. The easiest way, is to look online. All points have Code field. The numeric value is the number of the point assigned by the Topcon. In this example, that means the top point is a water valve, and the point is 155 in the data collector. The bottom image show an irrigation point collected at the intramurals field (so the point will be found in the intramural folder in the data collector) and is point number 194. Select Point o On the data collector, open the correct map. The maps have easy-to-understand names, such as fire hydrants, basesball, etc. o Connect to the antennae o Click the navigate button on the bottom of the home screen E:\How-To Directions\TOPCON Directions-KCC.docx 4

5 o This will open a new screen showing point or line. o Select the type of feature you are seeking. Right now, all of our data is point data. o A new screen will open titled Navigate to Point o Select the address box next to Original Pt, and enter the number of point you need to locate. o If you select the feature item and click on the map icon, the job you have open will open in map view and you can click on the point to locate and the number will enter. Navigate o Click the navigate button o Your map will open o Directions to the point will be shown in the lower left corner o The number of the point will display o You can arrow backward or forward to select a different point. o As you approach the blue and yellow circle will change and distance-to will appear..
