1 MAC - OS X Upgrade Notes Apple made a number of changes with OS X Lion Mountain Lion 10.8 and Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" that will impact the functionality of certain software titles and services offered by the Medical School. Mac users need to ensure their applications and drivers are compatible with Mac OS X 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9 before upgrading. Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" is not recommended at this time. VmWare Fusion 5.13 and earlier, Parallels 8.X and earlier and Virtualbox (any version) do not work in Mavericks reliably. Paid upgrades are available to Mavericks compatible versions Cisco AnyConnect (VPN) can crash and close vpn sessions randomly, especially on wifi connections. Not every customer has reported problems however. Not all Konica Minolta BIzHub multifunction printers have 10.9 drivers and may result in printing not being reliable or features not working properly. Not all Sharp and Ricoh multifunction printers have 10.9 drivers and thus may not work in Mavericks currently. In the future as compatibility is fixed upgrading to Mavericks will be less of an issue. Please consult this page for more information in the future. It may be tempting to upgrade because it is free, but other applications will break and will most certainly not be free. 2 Operating System (OS) Additions Cisco AnyConnect VPN The Cisco AnyConnect VPN client may have compatibility issues with Mac OS 10.9 "Mavericks". It may be unstable and may crash or randomly disconnect in Some of our customers have stated that it works fine, where other customers have stated that AnyConnect randomly disconnects with Cisco is aware of the issue, but has no ETA on when this will be fixed. At this time it is not recommended to upgrade to 10.9 if AnyConnect compatibility is important. Cisco AnyConnect, which is used for the Med VPN system located at requires an updated version for Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion. In addition it will require Java Runtime 7 from Oracle and Mac OS X Lion or newer to function in Lion and Mountain Lion (please see above). Mountain Lion connectivity issues with the VPN have been solved with the Cisco AnyConnect client version 3.1. Mountain Lion users can download and install the newest version of AnyConnect from the MSIS Cisco AnyConnect Page for Mac OS X. Java for Mac OS X discontinuation and transition to Oracle Java Runtime Apple in October 2012 implemented a policy and security update for Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8 (and now 10.9) users that disables Java 6 in Mac OS X. Java is an essential plug-in for web browsers that allows interactive content to work within certain websites.it is important to have Java on Mac OS X for a couple reasons: It is the technology that is required to be installed for the University of Michigan Medical VPN ( ) to function in Mac OS X. Without this AnyConnect will no longer function in Mac OS X. Some departments are also dependent on CrashPlan backup software, which requires Java to function properly. The Apple update is called Java Update and removes the Java plugin and Java support from Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion users. Apple issues rare security updates to Java 6 now only for Mac OS X 10.7 through To resolve this issue, go to the Oracle Java page and download the Java 7 run time for Mac OS X Lion and above. This update requires Lion or later in order to install. Note: the new version of Java is not compatible with Google Chrome Oracle Java for Mac OS X is a 64-bit application and will not work in 32-bit browsers. Currently Google Chrome is not a 64-bit browser. The current workaround is to use either Mozilla FireFox or Apple Safari instead of Chrome. Software Installations - Lion , Mountain Lion and Mavericks "Gatekeeper" - important note Applications PowerPC Applications Certain applications offered through the Medical School including the Adobe CS2 suite and Acrobat 7 will not work under the new Macintosh operating system OS X Lion or Mountain Lion. A PowerPC application is an application that was written and designed for Mac OS X operating systems before Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel processors in 2006 and Examples of PowerPC applications include: 1. Adobe Creative Suite CS3 and older Adobe Acrobat 7 and older Microsoft Office X and 2004 Older versions of Final Cut Pro, such as version 3 Lion 10.7 is the first version of OS X that does not support the PowerPC platform. As a result, all applications designed for the PowerPC platform, including many of the applications available for download by the Medical School, will no longer launch after upgrading the Macintosh to OS X Lion. For this reason, before upgrading to OS 10.7, Mac users are strongly encouraged to check the application type of their applications, or contact MSIS for assistance. To obtain a list of PowerPC applications installed on a Mac, perform the following steps: In the upper left corner of the screen, click the Apple icon and select About this Mac.

3 2. Click the More Info... button. 3. Once the System Profiler utility launches, on the left, scroll done the Contents list and, under the Software category, click the Applications option. Resize the column headings so the Kind column is visible. 4. Click the Kind column heading. The application list will be sorted by Kind and then alphabetically. Scroll down the list until PowerPC appears in the Kind column.

4 Any application in which the Kind is PowerPC (or Classic) will NOT work on OS X Lion. Any application in which the Kind is Intel or Universal will work on OS X Lion. After the upgrade to OS X Lion, any application that is not compatible will have a white circle with a slash superimposed over the application. Unless an updated, compatible version of the software is obtained, the only way to use PowerPC platform applications is to restore an older version of the Mac OS, which requires the original OS installation disks. Other software offered by the Medical School that will no longer launch after the upgrade will be noted on the Medical School Software page, which is accessed through the Medical School Applications page. At this time users of Medical School software for Mac OS X are advised to contact MSIS support. Adobe CS4, CS5, CS5.5 and CS6 Compatibility Adobe Creative Suite CS4, CS5, CS5.5 and CS6 require a few patches to make them compatible with Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks". CS4 through CS6 require updating Apple Java 6 to update 65, which is available as a standalone update from Apple's support site.please download Java Update from Apple to fix this bug, otherwise many Adobe applications will not launch CS6 requires running the Adobe Updater to fix small bugs in Illustrator and InDesign. Please open any CS6 application, then go to the help menu and choose "updates". The Adobe Application Manager will launch and will check for updates. Install any updates you find. EndNote X4, X5, X6 and X7 compatibility Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" is only compatible with EndNote X6 or later Please note that EndNote X4 may not function properly in Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" and 10.8 "Mountain Lion". It will open and work, but the program may not be stable. Officially Thompson Rueters states that only EndNote X5 or X6 is supported in Lion and only EndNote X6 is officially supported in Mountain Lion. Thompson Reuters states that Please see the table below for compatibility with Lion and Mountain Lion EndNote X6 is now available for Med School staff members; this version solves all known compatibility issues with Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion EndNote X6 is now available on the Med School Software page for all eligible Medical School staff members on university-purchased equipment only. Non-Medical School staff or installations on personal computers require licenses to be purchased from Computer Showcase for one computer or through Main Campus Software Licensing for multiple computers. 5 X ,10.5.8,10.6 PowerPC and Intel In Mac OS X Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8) The plugin for Microsoft Office or Pages integration may suddenly stop working or causes Word to crash.** Various instabilities in the application may occur. The application may randomly quit. Thompson Rueters currently does not support or endorse the use of Mountain Lion with EndNote X4 or EndNote X4 with Lion. EndNote X4 crashes and is unstable in Mountain Lion (10.8) X , , 10.6, 10.7 In Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) The plugin for Microsoft Office or Pages integration may suddenly stop working or causes Word to crash.** Various instabilities in the application may occur. Thompson Rueters currently does not support or endorse the use of Mountain Lion with EndNote X5 X , , 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 There are no known incompatibilities with this version on any version of Mac OS X or later. EndNote X6 is available to install on any University purchased equipment by contacting MSIS. X7 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 EndNote X7, which is currently only available from Computer Showcase (not free), is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 or later only and requires an Intel based Mac. FlowJo FlowJo is now compatible with Lion and Mountain Lion. The new version is available for current users on FlowJo's website: /home/macintosh.html. FlowJo needs to be on version 10.0 or later to be compatible with Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks". Microsoft Office Compatibility Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac OS X is fully compatible with Lion and Mountain Lion, but it however requires upgrading Office to Service Pack 2 for complete compatibility and to ensure compatibility with Retina based Macbook Pro computers. To upgrade to Office 2011 SP2 please do the following: Open up any Office for Mac application (such as Microsoft Word or Excel). Next go to the "help" pull down menu and choose "Check for Updates". The Microsoft AutoUpdate program will open. Click on "check for updates". It will scan your Mac to see if there is a newer patch for Office. Generally speaking if this has never been done before it will report that Auto Update will need to be updated. Click install and enter in your Mac's local username and password. Allow Auto Update to be updated. It will then scan the system again and state that you might need to be upgraded to Service Pack 2 of Office Allow this to install. Lastly scan for a third time; the third time will check to see if there is a security update for Office. Updating Office for Mac also adds specific Lion / Mountain Lion / Mavericks features, such as full screen and auto recover support. Virtualization Support (VMWare Fusion, Parallels Desktop and Virtualbox) Users who wish to run Windows 8 in a virtual machine must upgrade to Parallel's Desktop 8, VMWare Fusion 5 or Virtualbox 4.24 (or newer) Please see the Windows 8 and RT Upgrade Notes page for more information on Windows 8 compatibility with University systems.

6 VmWare Fusion 3, Parallels Desktop 5 and Virtualbox 3 are not compatible with Mountain Lion or Lion unless they are upgraded to a newer versions. If you are medical school affiliated, you are eligible for a 365 day license of VM Ware Fusion for free on a university purchased computer only. UMHS has a site license for all UMHS students and all UMHS employees who are using a University Purchased computer. To start this process please msishelp@umich.edu and request an installation of VM Ware Fusion 5.0. Students and those with personal Mac computers will have to purchase licenses from Computer Showcase for Fusion and Parallel's Desktop. OSX Version Supported VM Ware Fusion versions Supported Parallel's Desktop versions Supported VirtualBox versions 10.6 "Snow Leopard" 3, 4 6, 7, "Lion" 4, 5, 6 7, 8, "Mountain Lion" 4.14, 5, , 8, "Mavericks" 6 9 Major bugs - not recommended yet For 10.7, a minimum version of Parallels or Fusion purchased for the Mac is required. For Virtualbox please download the newest update from the Virtualbox site. For 10.8, either a minimum purchased version of Parallels or Fusion purchased for your Mac is required OR the software must be upgraded to the current Mountain Lion compatible version. Fusion 4 Parallels 7 Virtualbox For 10.9 users will have to pay to upgrade to VMWare Fusion 6 (except Med School purchased computers) or Parallels version 9 or later. Currently Virtualbox has major bugs with 10.9, so using VIrtualbox on Mavericks is not recommended. Medical School staff members are entitled to a free license of VMWare Fusion from eacademy. To get setup please contact the MSIS Service Desk at Newer versions of Parallels or VMWare Fusion are available through Computer Showcase. MSIS highly recommends Fusion for its greater compatibility with MSIS software and services. Please note that users who wish to use the CoreImage Virtual Machine or a MSIS VM must use VMWare Fusion 5.0 or later; the CoreVM is not compatible with Parallels, Virtualbox, or earlier versions of VMWare Fusion. Virtualbox is a free alternative to Parallel's and VMWare Fusion. However, VirtualBox does not have the same feature set and is much slower than Fusion and Parallels. Printer and Scanner Compatibility Issues Not all Konica Minolta BizHub printer work in Mac OS X "Mavericks" at this time. Konica Minolta has released a few 10.9 compatible drivers for their newest BizHub printers on their support website, but many models lack official support. This means that not all printer functions will work or may be unreliable Apple in Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks drastically changed their implementation of the Mac OS X printing and scanning system. This has created some issues with connecting to various printer and scanner models found on campus. Apple now provides most printer drivers through Apple Software Update and constantly updates them for compatibility, but not all printers and scanners are currently supported. Not all printer and scanner drivers are available through Apple Software Update. Apple charges a fee to printer and scanner manufacturers to have their drivers available through Apple Software Update and not every manufacturer chooses to participate. Scanner and printer manufacturers who do not provide drivers through Apple Software Update include: Konica Minolta Sharp Ricoh Oki Data HP (for only a few models however) Dell Dymo (label printers) Microtek (scanner manufacturer)

7 Fujitsu (scanner manufacturer) For the above manufacturers it will be necessary to download and install drivers manually from the manufacturer's web site, then add these printers in the Printers System Preference. If a driver is not available from the manufacturer or Apple the following will occur: The printer will not function at all or will not be recognized by Mac OS X. This is typical of unsupported inkjet and specialty printers. The printer will function with significant reduced capabilities and will require using the generic built in print driver - this is typical of unsupported laser printers. For laser printers the following advanced features will not work if a driver is not available from the manufacturer: Stapling or hole punching options from the printer's finisher Duplex printing (double sided printing) Forcing a color printer to print only in black and white Forcing a print job to come out of a specific tray or the multi purpose tray for doing jobs such as transparency, envelopes and large envelope printing. Various options to change print quality, using custom paper sizes, choosing specialty paper for high quality photo printing etc Secure printing (requiring a pin on the printer to print out the job for privacy) Using the multi-function printer as a network fax device Support for scanning from a multi-function laser printer or lack of support for scanning over the network. MSIS is currently aware of the following issues with the following printer models found in the MSIS and MCIT systems: Konica Minolta Konica Minolta currently does not supply drivers to Apple through Apple Software Update. Not every Konica Minolta multifunction printer is supported in 10.9 "Mavericks" or 10.8 "Mountain Lion" at this time. Support is added on a regular basis, and updated drives can be found on Konica Minolta's download support site. Updated drivers can be found at Konica Minolta's support site. Not all Konica-Minolta multifunction printer models are compatible with 10.9 at this time. Sharp Only more recent sharp models, such as the MX-4100 or MX-3610 have upgraded drivers for Lion and Mountain Lion compatibility. Please check Sharp's website for driver updates. Older models will function with significant reduced functionality with the built in generic driver. Sharp does not supply drivers through Apple Software Update. Not all Sharp multifunction printer models are compatible with 10.9 at this time. Ricoh Ricoh printers will require manually downloading and installing drivers from Ricoh's site. Ricoh does not supply drivers through Apple Software Update.Older Ricoh models will function with significant reduced functionality with the built in generic driver as they do not have Lion or Mountain Lion compatibility. Not all Ricoh multifunction printer models are compatible with 10.9 at this time. Oki Data Please check with the Oki Data website to ensure there is a Lion, Mountain Lion or Mountain Lion driver for your Oki Data printer. Older OkiData models will function with significant reduced functionality with the built in generic driver as they do not have Lion or Mountain Lion compatibility. HP A large majority of HP printers function fine with 10.7, 10.8 and Most HP printer drivers are supplied through Apple SOftware Update and the drivers are automatically installed when a printer is added to the Printer and Faxes System Preference pane. Dell Many Dell printers do not have Mac OS X compatibility at all. For the models that do, please go to Dell's support site, look up the printer by model number and see if there is Mac OS X Lion or Mountain Lion drivers. If there are not, the printer will still function with the generic Mac OS X driver, although with significant reduced functionality. Dymo Label Printers Dymo label printers work with Lion and Mountain Lion, but the software must be upgraded to the newest version (8.4.1) of Dymo Label. Dymo label can be downloaded from the Dymo Support Website. Please download version (or newer) for Mac OS X.

8 Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" requires downloading and installing Dymo Label Software or later; earlier versions crash after the Dymo Label application is launched. Microtek Scanners Currently only a handful of Microtek large image scanners are compatible with Lion (10.7). Currently however there are no Microtek scanners that officially function with Mountain Lion (10.8) or Mavericks (10.9). The supported models for Lion Include: ScanMaker i800 ScanMaker i800 Pro ScanMaker 9800XLPlus ScanMaker 9800XLPluswith TMA ScanMaker i800plus Other Microtek Scanners will require VueScan or another third party scanner driver to function in Lion or Mountain Lion. MicroTek scanners do not work in Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks". Fujitsu Scanners Fujitsu does not provide scanner drivers through Apple Software Update. They must be downloaded from Fujitsu's website. Fujitsu makes specific models of sheet-fed scanners that are for Mac OS X only. These models end with an M after the model name, for example the Mac version of the Fujitsu S510 is the S510m. Fujitsu has full compatibility with Lion and Mountain lion with their updated drivers on their website. The bundled software however may not be compatible with Lion and Mountain Lion and may require patches or purchasing newer version to ensure compatibility. Details can be found on Fu jitsu's support website. Many older Fujitsu SnapScan sheet fed scanners (like the SnapScan S500m) no longer work after installing Mac OS X "Mavericks". Certain newer models have patches available from Fujitsu's website. Misc Scanner Notes Scanner drivers are available through both the manufacturer, or Apple or both. Upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion for older scanners may break compatibility. Please check with the manufacturer's website to ensure there is compatibility with your scanner. If a manufacturer or Apple does not supply drivers for your specific scanner model there is a third party application called VueScan for for Mac OS X for $39.99 per license. This is not available through MSIS, Computer Showcase and cannot be purchased with a short code (it must be purchased with a credit card). More information can be found at the Hamrick Software website. The other alternative is to replace the scanner with a newer scanner that supports Mac OS X Lion or Mountain Lion. MSIS suggests contacting MSIS Support at for a recommendation. Other notes Much older printer models may no longer be supported by Apple or the printer/scanner manufacturer in Lion or Mountain Lion. MSIS suggests checking with the printer/scanner manufacturer for compatibility before upgrading. You may also wish to contact MSIS Support at to check on compatibility before upgrading. If you upgrade and there is no longer any compatibility then your options are: Use an alternative printer in your workspace that is Lion or Mountain Lion compatible. Print from a Windows computer or from Windows in a virtual machine on the Mac Replace the printer with a newer model that does have Lion or Mountain Lion support Downgrade your Mac to Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). This will require filing a ticket with MSIS and may not be possible depending on the particular Mac model you posses. UMMS File Storage Connections Currently these are no reported issues connecting to NetApp (the replacement to Blue Storage and Maize Storage) with Mac OS X. Users however have to format the file path correctly in the "Go: Connect to Server" server path however. Information about how to connect to NetApp in Mac OS X is covered on the NetApp File Storage Connections page Upgrade to the Latest OS As a first step, Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion users should run Apple Software Update and update the Mac OS X version on the computer to its latest release. Apple is aware of the compatibility issues with their implementation of Windows file sharing and is constantly attempting to fix these issues through software updates.

9 1. 2. Mac OS Lion 10.7: Upgrade to at least to fix multiple issues with Windows File Sharing. Mac OS Lion 10.8: Upgrade to at least to fix multiple issues with Windows File Sharing. Note: Most OS X upgrades require a reboot and will take several minutes. In the upper left corner, under the Apple Menu, select Apple Software Update. Download and install any Mac OS X or Mac OS X Combined update. Mount a Drive through Terminal Starting with OS X 10.7 Lion, the Mac OS incorporated a change in its SMB implementation that unfortunately prevents connections to UMMS file servers using the normal method. However, a UMMS drive can still be mounted to the Mac desktop using the Terminal utility. 1. Create a folder at new folder at the root of the hard drive. For this example, the folder will be called "admin". 2. On the desktop, double-click the hard drive icon, open the Applications folder, and then open the Utilities folder. Double-click the Termi nal application. 3. AT the prompt, type in a mount command in the following format: mount -t smbfs //uniqname@servername.umms.med.umich.edu/path/to /folder /localfolder Using the example, for Bob Smith (with a uniqname of "bobsmith") to mount the "Administration" folder on the MSA volume on the BlueStorage server to the local "admin" folder, the command would be typed as the following string: mount -t smbfs //bobsmith@bluestorage.umms.med.umich.edu/msa/administration /admin When prompted, enter the Active Directory password associated with the provided uniquename. After a successful login, the remote share icon will appear on the desktop. Users accessing BlueStorage volumes may also have success using the UMMS-NetworkShare-Helper Tool for Mac OS X. Alternative Workarounds If the above suggestions do not work or do not perform to expectation, a commercial software application, DAVE, provides full support of Windows file servers, including UMHS BlueStorage and MaizeStorage. DAVE from Thursby Software is the only known solution to completely allow full SMB or Windows File Sharing support for Mac OS X systems. The Dave client uses a licensed SMB protocol from Microsoft and thereby has full compatibility with Windows file servers. At this time UMMS, UMHS, and the university (through Computer Showcase) do not provide licenses for DAVE. DAVE is available from Thursby Software for $135 for a single license or $88 or less per Mac with educational pricing with a minimum of 5 licenses. Because of the cost involved, the DAVE client is considered a last resort if the above workarounds do not work. Note: DAVE has not been extensively tested by MSIS. Other Notes OS X Lion Vanishing Scroll Bars & How to Get Them Back Go under the Apple icon menu and select System Preferences... Click the General icon. Locate the Show scroll bars: setting and select Always.
