3 1 Getting the IDL Virtual Machine The EnMAP-Box 2.1 does not deliver the IDL Virtual Machine (VM) which you need for running the program. Therefore you need to download the VM and provide the EnMAP-Box with the path of the VM (section 2). In order to get the IDL VM, visit and create an account. With an account you are able to download software packages. Do this by clicking on MY ACCOUNT > Register and fill in the details. To continue your registration you have to confirm the link in the you received. Your registration will only be accomplished when your account has been finally verified by Exelis, which may take up to 1 day or more. Only then you are able to download the IDL VM. Once you received the second confirmation , login at with your username and password and click on Downloads. Now download either ENVI 5.2 or IDL 8.4 for your current OS. In either case, after installation, you will find a folder named IDL84 with a file called IDL Virtual Machine. 3

4 2 Getting the EnMAP-Box run This section explains how to install the EnMAP-Box as a normal user. If you want to develop applications for the EnMAP-Box or just use its API routines please see section 7 EnMAP-Box for Developers. Download the package for your operating system Unpack the ZIP file and copy the folder EnMAP-Box to a destination of your choice, e.g...\programs\enmap-box. You should find the following structure: You should also have a version of firefox or chromium browser to view the HTML reports in the EnMAP-Box (Windows/Linux users). For manuals etc. the document viewer evince should be installed (Linux users). Now you can start the EnMAP-Box using the executable/shell script that relates to your platform, e.g. IDLVMWin64\EnMAP-Box.exe for Windows 64 Bit or IDLVMLin64\EnMAP-Box for Linux 64 Bit In case a File not found error appears, you probably need to specify the path of your local IDL installation. Windows Systems: change the Action variable in the EnMAP-Box.ini: Linux/Unix Systems: change the IDL_DIR variable in the EnMAP-Box shell script: 4

5 3 Getting R programs run The EnMAP-Box 2.1 uses routines written in the programming language R. In order to run the programs written in R (like kmeans which is included in Version 2.1) you have to define the path of your R distribution. Select File > Preferences > hubapi Settings, choose the tab local settings and define the variable path_r = <your R folder> If you want to define the settings for all users (e.g. if you are an administrator), choose the global settings tab. All R programs have been tested using R version In order to install R packages, use the command > install.packages( name ) 5

6 4 Getting python programs run Furthermore, the EnMAP-Box 2.1 allows running programs written in the programming language python. For that you have to define the path of your python distribution. Select File > Preferences > hubapi Settings and define the variable path_python = <your python folder> If you want to define the settings for all users (e.g. if you are an administrator), choose the global settings tab. 7 5 Getting matlab programs run Finally, the EnMAP-Box 2.1 allows running programs written in the programming language matlab. For that you have to define the path of your matlab distribution. Select File > Preferences > hubapi Settings and define the variable path_python = <your matlab folder> If you want to define the settings for all users (e.g. if you are an administrator), choose the global settings tab. If it is not installed already, download the toolbox JSONlab into your toolbox folder. In Matlab, type addpath('/path/to/jsonlab'); To add this path permanently, type "pathtool" in matlab, browse to the jsonlab root folder and add it to the list, then click "Save". Then, type "rehash" in MATLAB, and type "which loadjson", if you see an output, that means JSONlab is installed for MATLAB/Octave. 7

8 6 Using EnMAP-Box Applications with ENVI This section explains how to integrate the EnMAP-Box into ENVI Classic. You have to execute the enmapboxenviinstaller.sav with the IDL Virtual Machine that is associated with your ENVI installation. Start the IDL Virtual Machine from your Windows Start Menu or from the console using run as administrator. This can be achieved by right-click on the.exe and run as administrator. Select the enmapboxenviinstaller.sav file. In case the installation was successful the following dialog appears. 8

9 Now just (re)start ENVI and you are able to use the EnMAP-Box routines Try to open the hubapi test images To de-install the EnMAP-Box from ENVI just execute the enmapboxenviinstaller.sav file again 9

10 7 EnMAP-Box for Developers The following steps show you how to make the EnMAP-Box routines running on your IDL Environment using the Eclipse based IDL Development Environment. Download the EnMAP-Box developer package from EnMAP-Box Portal Developer packages EnMAP-Box, Source Code EnMAP-Box_scr.zip EnMAP-Box_scr.tar.gz Unpack the file and copy folder EnMAP-Box to its final installation folder, e.g...\programs\enmap-box. You will find the following structure: The folder enmapproject contains all files required by the box and its applications, e.g. compiled SAV files, bitmaps, manuals, etc. New developed applications can be added by drag- ndrop to the enmapproject\applications folder. If *.sav files are associated with your local IDL version, you can start the EnMAP-Box in virtual machine mode by running the enmapboxvmlauncher.sav. 10

11 Open your IDL Workbench and add the SourceCode folder as a new project. Give it a meaningful name, for example EnMAP-Box-SourceCode and ensure that it is added to your IDL path. That s it. Type: IDL> enmapbox to your console and IDL will start compiling the *.pro files and to open the EnMAP-Box. 11

13 9 FAQs F: I use Linux and get the following error when trying to run the EnMAP-Box start-script ".../EnMAP-Box/idl80/bin/idl: 412: Syntax error: Bad substitution". A: To work around this, open the file './EnMAP-Box/idl80/bin/idl' with a text editor and change the first line from "#!/bin/sh" to "#!/bin/bash". 13
