4 Introduction Mark Thompson Global Technical Business Development Senior Applications Engineer Mark has been in the Mechanical CAD industry for 29 years. Mark spent his first year in the CAD/CAM support group and then moved to the technical marketing group where he has been ever since. Mark has been promoting Solid Edge since its first release in Mark s responsibilities include the creation of demonstration material for internal application engineers and channel partners, customer presentations, update training material, and support for the field personnel. Prior to coming to work in the mechanical CAD industry Mark spent 14 years as a machinist/tool maker. Page 4

5 Solid Edge ST9 provides the capability to assign custom Non-Graphic data to assembly occurrences These occurrences can be used for downstream use or integration with external systems like MRP/SAP Occurrence Properties such as notes, assembly instructions, reference ID/Designators, and maintenance procedures Page 5

6 These Properties can be read into the assembly occurrence properties dialog from an external file called CustomOccurrenceProperty.xml which is found in the Solid Edge ST9/Preferences folder. This xml properties file can be customized by the user. There are now options to Add or Delete custom occurrence properties within an assembly file. Page 6

8 The four default properties delivered are examples of the different types of properties that can be customized by the user. A Property can either be a keyed in value or a list of pre-defined values such as the maintenance property example For this Hands-On session we need to copy our custom xml file into the Preferences folder. Navigate to the Assembly Occurrence Properties/Setup folder. Right mouse button click on CustomOccurrenceProperty.xml file and select Copy. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Solid Edge ST9\Preferences folder and Rename the current CustomOccurrenceProperty.xml file to CustomOccurrenceProperty-orig.xml Paste the copied xml into the folder. 9 Start Solid Edge Browse to Assembly Occurrence Properties\Juicer\Work In Progress folder and Open using As Last Saved option the ZX-0001_A.asm file. Select the pull down menu from the Configurations group and select 6-Housing. Page 9

10 Rotate the model over so you are looking at the bottom side where the feet reside. Fence select the 6 feet. Page 10

11 With the 6 feet selected, click to also select the housing, not the back cover. After these components are selected, right mouse button click to open the options menu and select Occurrence Properties located at the bottom of the menu. The Occurrence Properties menu will appear as shown below. Page 11

12 Right mouse button click on the top row where the property names are located. Select Columns from the drop down menu. When the Format Columns dialog appears, click the checkboxes from X all the way to the bottom to turn off these columns. We do this just to make the Occurrence Properties dialog a little easier to look at during this hands-on. Click OK to dismiss the dialog. Page 12

14 Select the Add Custom Occurrence Properties command This will identify the properties that reside in the CustomOccurrenceProperty.xml file that we copied into the Preferences folder earlier. This will read in the following properties as shown. Now that the Occurrence properties are set, click OK to dismiss the dialog. Area up on the bottom of the housing where you can see the six feet. 15 Select the Toggle Display command from the bottom menu. Click on the three feet to temporarily turn them off so we can see what is underneath each one. Foot-Plug Notice that one is simply a foot, one is a plug, and one is a foot-plug. While you are still in the Toggle Display command, turn these feet back on. Right mouse button click to dismiss the toggle display command. Page 15 Plug Foot

16 We will use the example of the different uses for the rubber feet to show how the new custom occurrence properties can be used within Solid Edge. Fit the view. Fence select the six feet again as well as the housing RMB click and use Show Only to hide other components Right mouse button (RMB) click to get back into the Occurrence properties dialog. Double click in the first Reference ID cell Key in 101 in the first row of the Reference ID column. RMB click and select Copy to copy cell contents. Select Apply when finished. Page 16

17 Click and hold the mouse down in the empty cell below 101, and then drag your mouse down to highlight all the other cells as shown. RMB click in one of the highlighted cells and then select paste. Change the numbers from the second row down to 102, 103, etc. HINT a double click behind each number puts you in the edit mode. Page 17

18 Next, we need to apply a Type to each of the components except for the housing. This particular property is setup to be a List of values defined in the CustomOccurrenceProperty.xml. By clicking in each field you can select from the pull down menu as to which type of foot it is, a Foot, a Foot-Plug, or a Plug. As you select each row the part will graphically highlight for easy identification. Define each of the feet as designated. Select Apply when finished. Page 18

19 Next, lets add a note to the housing Note column. Key in Clean feet surfaces before applying glue. From this simple example you can see how you can easily add custom properties to your components. Click OK to dismiss the dialog. Assembly Occurrences have also been extended for use throughout the product. Select the Select Tools icon to expand the view Page 19

20 Select the New Query button. Add a query name. Select Custom Occurrence for Property. Select Type for the occurrence property. Key in Foot for the Value. Click Add to List Page 20

21 With the query created it can be used to search for any components with the occurrence properties of type that equal Foot. Double click on Machine Feet. This query will locate and highlight the four feet as shown, so these properties can easily be used to search, locate, and highlight components. Fit the view and then select Take Snapshot command. Select the View tab, then select the Saved Views pull down menu and select Save Current View. Key in View of Feet, then click OK Page 21

22 Select the Application button in the top left corner. Select New. Select Drawing of Active Model command. Select Browse. Browse to Presentation folder, then select ISO Draft.dft. Click OK. Page 22

23 When the draft file comes up the placement box is attached to your cursor, but do not click to place. Select Drawing View Wizard Options button. From the pull down menu select Assembly Snapshot. Un-check Orthogonal Views. Page 23

24 Change the Scale from 1:5 to 1:2 do this with one scroll of the mouse wheel or select the scale from the pull down menu on the ribbon bar. Select View orientation command and expand the Named Views to select View of Feet. Select Shading Options command, then select Shaded with Edges. Page 24

25 Click to place the view as shown. Select Parts List command from the main ribbon bar in the Tables group. Select the placed view. Page 25

26 Select the pull down menu from the ribbon bar and select Occurrence properties. Custom parts list created for this hands-on session Now select the Properties button. Select List Control tab Select the Configuration pull down menu. Select Assembly Snapshot. Select OK Page 26

27 Click to place the Parts List. Notice the results. Great Job! Close files don t save. Leave Solid Edge running. Page 27

28 Occurrence Property behavior As described in the.xml file, each property also has a Property Behavior value. Behavior settings define how a particular property behaves in the active assembly as well as when it is placed in an upper level assembly Basic behavior description: Local value stored in the active assembly only Global value stored in the assembly that owns the occurrence Global+Override allows override of the value from an upper level assembly Page 28

29 Possible reason for override behaviors Consider a sub-assembly that resides in several different top level assemblies, but may require different treatment in each of those top level assemblies. For example the Part(s) may need to be greased once a month (or painted a certain color) in one assembly and in another assembly it may need grease twice a week (or painted a different color). Allowing overrides in upper level assemblies provides a way for users to apply different information to those components without changing the default occurrence information in the sub-assembly where it resides. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Solid Edge ST9\Preferences. Delete the CustomOccurrenceProperty.xml. Copy CustomOccurrenceProperty-orig.xml and paste Rename CustomOccurrenceProperty-orig Copy.xml to CustomOccurrenceProperty.xml. Page 29

30 Colors used to indicate override and tooltips lists where override occurs White Value is saved in the ASM where the component resides Light Yellow Set to Local - any information is added to that occurrence Yellow Value is overridden in lower level sub-assembly Light Blue Value is overridden in the active ASM Page 30

31 The override capability also supports the current assembly occurrence property values from the higher level assembly of read-only assemblies so they can configure their assembly display in draft and for placement in other assemblies Override does not modify sub-assembly occurrence property values Draft supports these override settings The values that can be overridden are: Selectable Higher level Draft Reference Reports/Parts List Drawing Views Physical Properties Interference checks Page 31

32 From the Solid Edge interface select Browse. Navigate to C:\_SEU 2016\Assembly Occurrence Properties\Occurrence Properties Behaviors folder. Open _LOWER Level-A.asm Right mouse button click in view and select Occurrence Properties. Select Delete occurrence properties command. When the Delete dialog appears, select each property. Click OK to delete these properties. Page 32

33 Select Add Custom Occurrence Properties. Set the columns to be similar to shown columns. For the gear1.par add the property values shown Save and Close the assembly. Page 33

34 Browse and Open _MIDDLE Level-A.asm Right mouse button click and select Occurrence Properties. RMB click on Reference ID with the value of 100 and try to use Add Override. When you do it will give the following warning because it is set to Global only. The BOM ID property was set to local, so its value will only show up in the _LOWER Level-A.asm. RMB on Maintenance and Add Override to the daily value. Change its value to Bi-Weekly, then select Apply. Page 34

35 Save and Close _MIDDLE Level-A.asm. Browse and Open _TOP Level-A.asm. RMB click in the view and select Occurrence Properties. Expand both _MIDDLE Level-A.asm and _LOWER Level-A.asm. Expand _LOWER Level-A.asm Page 35

36 RMB click on Add Grease and select Add Override. Change the vale to Add Lithium Grease. Select Apply. Notice the tooltips and how they help you understand what the values mean. Save and Close _TOP Level-A.asm Page 36

37 Other Override capabilities Changes were made so that occurrence properties of components marked Higher Level = No are shown in occurrence properties so that they can be overridden in upper level assemblies Processing stops in the dialog at the component marked Higher Level = N and only shows this component in the dialog The occurrence is treated as an end-node (Notice THIRD Level.asm ) Page 37

38 In this example we will look at using Higher Level to control what components get shown at Higher levels as well as using overrides. Browse and Open _MIDDLE Level-A.asm. RMB click in view and select Occurrence Properties. Select the head1.par and set its Higher Level value to No from the pull down menu. Select the _LOWER Level-A.asm and set its Higher Level value to No from the pull down menu. Page 38

39 Save and Close the _MIDDLE Level-A.asm. Browse and Open _TOP Level-A.asm. Notice the parts that we set Higher Level to No are not showing. Also notice they are missing in PathFinder. RMB click in the view to open Occurrence Properties. Expand _MIDDLE Level-A.asm. RMB click on No for the head1.par and select Add Override. Page 39

40 Also use the Add Override for _LOWER Level-A,asm Change both their values to Yes. Select Apply and notice they both appear. NOTE: Using Add Override changes the value at the current level. If you change the value without using Add Override, they change the values at all levels. Page 40
