1 Making recordings and burning them to CD can be done in four steps: 1. Make the recordings 2. Transfer them to your computer 3. Edit them 4. Copy the edited files to itunes 1. Make the recordings Turn on the power to the Zoom recorder by sliding the power switch down to the symbol. Hold for about one second. Press to start recording. To stop recording, press the button again. Repeat the above steps to continue making recordings. Turn off the power to the Zoom recorder the same way you turned it on: by sliding the power switch down to the symbol. Hold for about one second. 2. Transfer the recordings to your computer Create a new folder on your Desktop, using the File menu in the Finder. A new folder appears called untitled folder. The title field is highlighted and active. Type a more meaningful title into the title field ( today s recordings, for example).

2 Be sure the power to the Zoom recorder is off. Use the USB cable to connect the recorder to your computer. An icon will appear on your Desktop: The recorder is now functioning like a disc drive. Double-click it to view its contents. In this example, there are three files in a folder called FOLDER01, which is within the folder called STEREO. Note that they are.wav files, which is an audio file format. Drag the.wav files into the folder you created on the Desktop. Drag the recorder icon to the Trash to remove it from the Desktop. Note that, since this is a disc drive and not a file, the Trash icon becomes an Eject symbol. Treat this just as you would the Trash, and drag the drive icon over the Eject symbol. When the drive icon disappears form the Desktop, count to three (for good measure), and then unplug the recorder from the computer. Set the recorder aside.

3 3. Edit your recordings Typically, when you record, you will activate the recorder, walk to the piano, make your recording, walk back to the recorder, and stop recording. As a result, your recordings will have extra silence before and after the music that you don t want. Launch the Audacity program. Once it has launched, open one of your audio files. NOTE: if you double-click the audio file icons, they will not open in Audacity. You must launch Audacity and then open the files from within Audacity. The file appears as a waveform. (Note that since the recording is in stereo, there is a wave view for the left and right channels.) To remove unwanted portions, click and drag over a segment of the wave and hit the DELETE key on your computer keyboard. You can use the tape recorder-like buttons to listen to your changes. You can undo mistakes by going to Edit -> Undo.

4 When you have finished editing the file, go to File -> Export. NOTE: If you go to Save Project, your file will be saved in the Audacity file format, and not the generic audio file format. At the next dialog box, select either the WAV or AIFF file format Enter a more helpful name for the file (the name of the piece, for example). Be sure to save your exported files to a place they will be easy to find, like the Desktop. These will be new files, not the files that you transferred from the recorder. When you have exported your files, you can delete the folder of files you brought in from your recorder.

5 4. Bring your audio files into itunes Launch itunes. Click Music under LIBRARY. This shows your entire collection of music files. Drag the files you exported from Audacity into the itunes window. This copies them to your itunes music collection. Once they are copied into itunes, you can delete the audio files exported from Audacity from your Desktop. Create a new playlist. It will appear under PLAYLISTS as untitled playlist. Click within this title text and rename the playlist to something more meaningful. Drag the files you just copied into itunes into this new playlist. Double-click the playlist to view it. Drag your files up or down so that they appear in the order you want. Insert a blank CD into the computer. A BURN DISC button will appear in itunes. Click it to burn your playlist to CD. At some point, you will need to plug your recorder back into the computer and delete the audio files from it by dragging them into the Trash. Remember that they aren t really gone until you select Finder -> Empty Trash.
