2 Participants will learn how to: Learner s Outcomes connect to your Recordex panel via a cable for a mirroring of your computer s contents. utilize Simplicity Xpress to annotate on the desktop and XPress whiteboard. install the XPress Chrome browser extension. connect a document camera and use Simplicity XSight. use a slate and touch laptop to gain mobility through-out the classroom and encourage collaboration from the students. use handwriting recognition. 3 Opening Files Stand- Alone Shortcuts Stand-Alone Mode nolaptop physically or wirelessly connected, just USB/Flash drive Physically/tethered connected via VGA or HDMI cable + USB for touch capability Wirelessly connected to NovoPro via Novo Desktop Streamer - application installed on laptop Media Files (Video, Image, Music) On the Home Screen click on the USB Drive shortcut. MSOffice Files (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) On Application Screen click on Applications and use OfficeSuite PDF Files On Application Screen click on Applications and OfficeSuite or Adobe. Web Pages willnotwork when Flash or Lightspeed (e.g., YouTube videos) are required. Can open any file with the applications installedon your laptop by launching the application from your laptop. Web Pages should work as when using laptop when not connected. Ability to use Lightspeed. 3
4 Change the Source Each panel includes the VGA, HDMI and USB cables. Click on the Input Source on the Panel s Control Panel. Select the desired option VGA or HDMI If using a HDMI connection you will select HDMI1 (HDMI2 is connected to the NovoPro for wireless connectivity). You may require a mini-hdmi to HDMI adapter. 5 Changing the Input Source INPUT SOURCES CONNECTION TYPE PURPOSE CABLE TYPE Use the panel s controlpanel to select the appropriate Input Source by clicking. VGA - Physical HDMI 1 -Physical HDMI 2 -Wireless Connectwith Cable Depends upon laptop connection If laptop is HDMI, cable is provided. 6 Connecting your Laptop or Mirroring your Laptop Windows Determine which cable your laptop requires: VGA or HDMI Additionally, a USB connection is required for touch capability. You may have to use the Windows + P keystroke command to enable a Duplicate Screen (i.e., mirroring). Mac (Apple) For Mac and adapter is required determine which is required for your computer Additionally, a USB connection is required for touch capability. Mac s also require a driver be installed for the touch feature (touchscreensetup[ ].pkg) You may have to go to the Display System Preference to enable mirroring. 6
7 Windows -Duplicating (Mirroring) Screen Use the keystroke command: Windows key + P In the screen capture below you will click on the Duplicate option. 7
8 Mac -Duplicating (Mirroring) Screen From the Apple menu select System Preferences. Click on Displays. Click on the Arrangement tab. In the lower-left corner of the Arrangement pane, select Mirror Displays X Information & Technology 8
9 Adding the Chrome Extension to Browser Launch Chrome and click on the menu bar at the right-top of the screen. 1. Select More Tools and then Extensions. 2. Scroll through the Extensions and at the bottom select Get more extensions. 3. Search for XPress Chrome in the Chrome Web Store and select +Add to Chrome. + Add to Chrome 9

11 Planning Mode -Creating your Lesson on your Laptop On your laptop double-click the XPress shortcut. When you do a blank Xpress screen will appear. Just like XPress on the panel, you will have 2 toolbars Annotation tools Presentation tools Click on the desired tool To change the direction from vertical to horizontal, click on the A> or P> selection. 12 Presenting your Lesson Examples #1 #2 On the right-side of the screen click on the to open the Navigation & Options tools. Note that in example #1, there are no saved workbooks. Whereas, in example #2 there are two saved workbooks. To open Saved books, click on the Open folder icon. We re opening a workbook created during planning. Note the path where files are stored: C:\Users\P \Documents\XPress Macs Macintosh HD:/Users /Teacher/Documents/XPress 12
13 The Science Workbook with Simplicity XPress Once you open the workbook you created during planning, you ll simply proceed through your planned lesson to teach the students about Vertebrates and Invertebrates. 13
14 Tools available with XPress from your computer. Launch web page: Click on the Screen color tool and slide the Opacity slider from the right to the left. You can see items open or your desktop such as a webpage thereby allowing you to annotate on the website. The Click Through tool allows you to scroll on the webpage. Screencast-O-Matic (in the Navigation toolbar) allows you to record in 15 minute increments. 14
15 Customizing XPress Navigation Toolbar Click on the hamburger tool on the left of the screen. Click on the Gear tool. Under Screenshots notice that the default format is PNG. Options include: PNG, JPG, or PDF Change this to PDF this will allow your screenshots to be in the.pdf format and you to save your workbook as a.pdf for distribution to students via CANVAS or . Under Appearance you may wish to change the following: Two-sided menu places the Navigation tools on both sides of the XPress window. Note: you must exit the program for configuration changes to take effect. 15
16 Saving an XPress Workbook as a PDF With your XPress workbook opened, click on the camera. Click on #1 to Capture all the pages. Note, you may have to resize the objects on the pages in your workbook. Click Print and select CutePDFWriter as your printer. When prompted, enter the name your file. 16

20 Trouble-Shooting Sound Sound from laptop, notthe panel Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar. Select Playback devices. a. When the laptop is connected to the panel, LED-MONITOR may be an option. b. Right-click the Speaker/HP select Disable. Information & Technology 20
21 Trouble-Shooting Techniques SOUND From the laptop connected via HDMI, open a video or music file. Check the volume on the laptop to see if it is muted. Sometimes the audio from the browser can be muted. From the laptop connected via VGA, open a video or music file. Make sure the sound cable is connected. Buzz grounding cable in the back of board can be unplugged. For Macs, hold down the Option Key and click the Volume Icon, in the OSX menu bar. Select LED-MONITOR as your audio source. Touch TOUCH & RESOLUTION USB cable is not connected. If screen resolution is not right, it may affect touch. Recommended resolution: 1920x1080. If unable, select 1366x768. To rule out panel s touch feature, go back to Stand-alone mode and launch XPress. Click pen and annotate on the board. Resolution Lenovo 11e will not duplicate full-screen on the board due to resolution settings. 21

23 Simplicity Slate Setup the hardware: Tips for using the pen: Pairing the slate to your laptop: with the USB hub in the laptop, hold the Sleep/Settings Button down and turn on the power. The Active/Write Status LED light should start blinking blue. 23

25 Simplicity Camera Setup & XSight Connect the camera to your laptop. Launch XSight - the first time you will be asked to select a camera. You will go to Options from the menu bar. On the Device tab, click the drop-down arrow by Video Device and select RecordexUSA Information & Technology 25
26 Using the Simplicity Camera Plug the camera into an USB port on your computer. Launch XSight. Place the document or object under the camera Use the Annotation Toolbar and Options to manipulate the objects. Annotation Toolbar Options 26
27 Using the Simplicity Camera & XSight Presenter Toolbar Presenter Toolbar Options: Image Effects Toolbar Image Effects Toolbar Options: Split Screen divides the current image into two equal parts. The right side is frozen and the left side remains active. Used to view and compare a live image. Freeze pauses the preview window. This is a good way to move between objects without having the transition occur on screen. Mirror displays a mirror image of the camera view. Negative will switch camera to view a negative image. Color/B&W toggles the view from color to black and white. 27
28 Connecting an Elmo Doc Camera to the Recordex Panel NO SOFTWARE IS REQURIED 1. Connect the VGA cable from the Recordex panel to the ELMO document camera. In Photo #1 the blue cable is connected to the computer. The black cable is connected to the panel. 2. Use the buttons on top of the Elmo to switch between computer and camera. 3. Photo #2 show the document viewed on the panel. 4. The annotation tools are the built-in Recordex annotation tools (the two finger/knuckle swipe from the center of the panel). Photo #1 Photo #2 28

31 Exercise 1 Planning your Lesson In this exercise, you re going to create a 5 page lesson using the Xpress application installed on your laptop. Be sure to use the templated created by Innovative Learning to complete the follow-up. 1. Launch XPress 2.5 by double-clicking the shortcut on your desktop. 2. Create your workbook by inserting an textbox, image, website, and/or video file. 3. To insert a page and use the white board to annotate. You may wish to have a white board page with a textbox set of directions for your students. a. Open the Navigation & Options tools. b. Click the to add a second page. Repeat for additional pages. c. Add your next lesson page of your lesson. 4. Save the file by clicking the and append your last name. The file will be saved at the following path: C:\Users\P000XXXXX\Documents\XPress (Macs: Macintosh HD/Teacher/Documents/XPress). 5. To reorder the pages, click the page until it gets a border and then drag into the desired new location. 6. If you wish to have an original copy and a revised copy with the changes, click the tool. 31
32 Elements to Include in Your XPress Workbook PART 1 Participants will create a standards based interactive learning activity using Xpress workbook that integrates curriculum resources with the Recordex presentation system and software/tools. You will used the template provided for you. The lesson should consist of at least 5 or more Xpress workbook pages. Page 1 should include: Date Participant s First and Last Name Participant s School Lesson Title: Lesson Description: (1-2 sentences) Curriculum Standard Addressed Rate the lesson utilizing the Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) Name the workbook Upload the workbook to CANVAS. PART 2 After presenting your lesson to your class, record a 1-2 minute video reflection to share the success and challenges of the lesson activity implementation. You can use either Screencast-O-Matic, the built-in camera on your laptop, Movie Maker, or the video creator in CANVAS. Upload the video to CANVAS. 32
33 Exercise 2 Connecting to the Panel In this exercise, you re going to connect your laptop to the panel and open up your lesson for a presentation. 1. Determine the type of connector your laptop has VGA or HDMI. 2. Plug the cable from the panel into the appropriate laptop connection. 3. Click the source button on the panel and select the matching option to your laptop. 4. You may have to change the laptop display to Duplicate. a. For Windows, use the keystroke command Windows + P. b. For Macs, go to the Display System Preferences and select Duplicate. 5. Your desktop should appear on the panel. 6. Open up a website. 7. Open up Xpress on top of the website. 8. Use the Opacity option in the Scene Color tool to view the website that is in the background. Remember the Click-Through tool for scrolling through the website. 33
34 Exercise 3 Presenting your Lesson In this exercise, you re going to open the lesson you created in Exercise Your laptop should already be connected as in Exercise Launch XPress from your laptop. 3. Click on the Navigation & Options. a. Click on the tool and navigate to the XPress folder to the file you previously created by clicking on the workbook. b. Proceed with your lesson by annotating on the XPress screen. i. This can be instructor or student led. 4. Open up an image or document from your laptop and extend to full screen. Use an annotation tool to indicate items of interest on your document. 5. You may wish to use Screencast-O-Matic to record parts for absent students. 34
35 Exercise 4 Using the Simplicity Slate In this exercise, you re going to practice with the slate in XPress. 1. Your laptop should already be connected as in Exercise Insert the USB hub from the back of the slate into an USB port in the laptop a. Launch XPress with the Slate s pen. b. With the slate, click the Pen tool. i. Annotate on the page in the workbook. c. Click on the Image tool. i. Insert an image (.pdf,.png, or.jpg file) into your workbook. ii. Annotate on the image by clicking the Pen tool. 3. Explore the convenient shortcut buttons on the edges of the slate: a. My Computer point and click to open up other applications (PowerPoint, etc.) b. Web Browser point and click to launch default web browser i. Scroll button to scroll through the web browser c. Volume adjust the volume 35
36 Exercise 5 Using the Document Camera In this exercise, you re going to connect the Simplicity Document Camera to the Recordex panel to show an object or document on the panel. 1. Connect the Simplicity Document Camera to your laptop with the USB cable included with the camera. 2. Launch XSight by double-clicking the shortcut on your laptop s desktop/taskbar. 3. If the camera is not recognized, click on the Options tool and select the Document camera as a Device. 4. Place a hard copy or object under the camera to display. a. You may have to flip and/or rotate the image. b. Annotate on the file using the Pen tool in the Annotation toolbar in XSight. c. Use the Spotlight and Magnify tools on the Presentation toolbar in XSight. 5. For those of you who already have an Elmo camera: a. Connect via the VGA cable. b.
