1 Moving Materials from Blackboard to Moodle Blackboard and Moodle organize course material somewhat differently and the conversion process can be a little messy (but worth it). Because of this, we ve gathered material to help you make the transition, especially if you ve decided to go at it alone. If you have any questions or run into any problems, please contact moodlehelp@brynmawr.edu. The Basics The first thing to do is bring up your course in Blackboard. In another tab, open up your Moodle course in settings. After that, you need to download bfree, which you can get at Click on Information and Download, scroll down and click Launch. The Less Basic Now, you need to archive your course in Blackboard. To do this, first bring up the Blackboard tab, and then go to the course that you wish to move. On the left hand panel, you should see the Control Panel option under Tools. Click this option.

2 This should bring you to a page like the one shown above. In the Course Options panel of this page, click Export Course. The next page will ask you to select what you would like to export. In most cases, you want everything listed under Content. Check the boxes next to everything you want, and then click Submit at the bottom when you re done. A message will tell you that your request has been queued and an will come when the process is completed. It will take a minute or two for this to happen, just go back the Export Course page and the file should appear. In order to download the exported file on your computer, you should click on the blue file name that begins with ExportFile.bmc like the screenshot above. After you click this file, a dialogue box will appear. Choose to save the file in a memorable location.

3 Now open up bfree. In the left hand corner click file and then choose open an archive zip. After you do this, a dialogue box will come up. Choose the location of the file and then click on the archived file from Blackboard you have just downloaded. Once you ve selected the right file, click Open. bfree will then organize your files nicely for an easier conversion to Moodle. These files and folders will be displayed on your screen.

4 Now that this is done, the next step is to go back to File in the top, left-hand corner and select the option to Extract as Files/Folders. Another dialogue box will appear. For this one, you should give the file a new name and click save. Don t forget to ensure that you are saving the file in a memorable location! Now, find the folder you just saved. Once you ve found the folder s location, you should right click the file and choose send to and then Compressed (zipped) Folder. This will zip the file. (If you re on a Mac, control + click and then select Compress ) Now we head off to the Moodle tab to finally do some uploading.

5 In Moodle, go to the page of the course you are currently working on. In the Administration block, choose the files option. This will bring you to a screen with some pre-loaded files. Click Upload a File. Now click Browse and choose the file you just zipped. Click Upload this File. This will take you back to the page you were just at. You should now see the file on the list. Choose the option to unzip it.

6 This file will now be a folder with sub-folders. These are all the files from your course. You should be able to go through each of the folders and see your course material from blackboard divided into files and sub-folders. You will not be able to add files to your course from here. To add files to your course, you will have to go back to the main course page, turn editing on, and add them as a file or directory (For instructions on how to do this, refer to the documentation on Link to a File or Website and Display a Directory.
