1 Uploading a course cartridge into Desire2Learn Instructional Development May 11, 2010 pogden@mansfield.edu x4608 :?) phil I mention importing a course cartridge, but technically what I have been working with are BlackBoard archive zip files. Can I import a Blackboard course cartridge into my Learn@ UW Stout course? No. Please request that your publisher send you a BlackBoard archive zip file instead of a BlackBoard course cartridge. 2 (01) How to import an archive zip file into D2L: Save the zip file in a location where you will be able to find it easily. For this demo, I have saved my file on the T: drive (01) Save or locate your file (02a) Log into D2L (02a) Logging in

3 (02b) Log into D2L (02b) (03) Click on the destination course (where the content will be loaded) You may need to scroll down to find the course you want, depending on how many courses are listed. (03) Select course

4 (04) Click Edit Course in the navigation bar (04) Edit course (05) Click on Import/Export/Copy Components you will have to scroll down to find the Tools section and Import/Export/Copy Components (05) Import components

6 (08) Navigate to the file you want to import Remember that we said to put it somewhere that you could find it easily? ;) (08) Find your file (09) Navigate to the file you want to import, select it, and click Open. (09) Select and open your file

7 (10) When you are returned to the Import/Copy/Export Components screen, click the Next button in the lower right corner to continue. (10) Click next (11) After a short delay, accompanied by some dancing blue rectangles (11) Please wait

8 (12) You will see the Preprocessing screen (instructions continue on next slide) (12) Preprocessing screen (13) When D2L finishes Downloading the File & Reading the Package Click the Next button when the word Next changes from light to dark (there will also be a green check in front of Reading ) (13) Click next

9 (14) In the Import Options screen, click the Select All Components checkbox this is assuming that you are bringing in everything if not, you can go through the list and click on the radio buttons that say Select individual items to import for each area that you want to pick out less than Import all items. Note: you will probably want to select overwrite and metadata options (instructions continue on next slide) (14) Choosing your options (15) When you have made all your decisions and have come to the bottom of the list Click Next (15) Click next

10 (16) The Confirm Import Selections screen appears, check what you chose, scroll down and click Next (16) Confirm your choices (17) This begins the import process green checkmarks indicate success at each stage of the process. If the import process finishes, click the Next button, and you will receive a message telling you that the import was successful, and our task is pretty much complete. If, however, the process goes on for more than 2 minutes (instructions continue on next slide) (17) Begin import process

11 (18) You will receive a message telling you that the A system timeout has occurred. This news is not good. It means that the D2L system was unable to process all of your content within the 2 minute timeout limit. (instructions continue on next slide) (18) Bad news (19) It further means that as a temporary work-around you must repeat this process from step (04) Click Edit Course in the navigation bar but when you get to step (14) In the Import Options screen, click the Select All Components checkbox you must select a smaller amount of content so that the process can finish in under 2 minutes. Deciding on how much content to select to allow the process to finish on time is an educated guess at this point. It is suggested that you try half of your content at a time as your first guess, and work from there, depending on results. We realize how much of an inconvenience this is and are working with D2L both to try to improve system performance, and also to increase this timeout limit.
