3 FRAUNHOFER Space Alliance Bringing together 15 institutes, the Fraunhofer Space Alliance conducts applied research in the field of industrial space technology. Weather forecasts, navigation, real-time transmission for satellite TV or global Internet access space industry applications and services have become an indispensable part of daily life, underpinning the importance of space technology for a modern industrialized society. In the Fraunhofer Space Alliance, the institutes pool their technological expertise in order to provide the industry and funding agencies such as the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission with a central contact. Fraunhofer acts as systems provider, developing a wide range of top-quality components, integrating them into an overall system and delivering that system to the customer. The sheer technological variety of the participating institutes enables the Fraunhofer Space Alliance to offer its customers a unique range of services. Its business units are Communication and Navigation, Materials and Processes, Energy and Electronics, Surfaces and Optical Systems, Protection Technology and Reliability and Sensor Systems and Analysis. Thomas Loosen Phone thomas.loosen@int.fraunhofer.de FRAUNHOFER Transport Alliance The Fraunhofer Traffic and Transportation Alliance develops technical and conceptual solutions for public-sector and industrial customers and translates them into practical applications. It does this by identifying future developments and guiding the focus of sponsored research programs. The Alliance analyzes market requirements and develops system solutions in multi-institute collaborative projects. It also draws together and markets the expertise of its members in the field of traffic and transportation. Workgroups such as Automotive, Rail, Aviation and Waterborne help to assure a close relationship with the sector. International research programs and contracts from around the world ensure that the member institutes maintain links to companies and research organizations involved in traffic and transportation worldwide. The Alliance s central office brings together suitable partners. Christiane Kraas Phone christiane.kraas@iml.fraunhofer.de 4 5
4 FRAUNHOFER EMI FRAUNHOFER FHR At Fraunhofer EMI, satellite components are tested and qualified against space debris and meteoroid impacts under representative environmental conditions on impact facilities that are unique in Europe. With the vulnerability analysis software PIRAT, the complete satellite design can be checked for vulnerabilities against impacts in early development phases. Another focus of the impact research at Fraunhofer EMI is on cratering processes on geological surfaces and the kinetic deflection of asteroids. We investigate such scenarios on a laboratory scale in experiments and by numerical simulations conducted with in-house numerical tools and material models. Fraunhofer EMI is currently developing a versatile 12U nanosatellite platform to exploit the advantages of the dynamic nanosatellite market for more complex payloads. Test facilities for vibration, thermal-vacuum and shock load qualification are also available for this purpose. In its role as one of the leading European institutes, Fraunhofer FHR conducts extensive research in the area of high frequency and radar techniques. The research activities at Fraunhofer FHR focus on imaging systems and sensors for highest precision range or position determination. The application spectrum of these devices ranges from reconnaissance, surveillance and protection systems to real-time capable sensors for traffic and navigation as well as quality assurance and non-destructive testing. In the field of space observation, the institute provides comprehensive expertise for obtaining space situational awareness. Dipl.-Volksw. 5 Fraunhofer INT FRAUNHOFER IOF Fraunhofer INT investigates the effects of ionizing radiation on electronic, opto-electronic, and photonic components and systems. Fraunhofer INT operates the most comprehensive set of irradiation facilities in Europe and can simulate almost any type of radiation, energy and radiation effect relevant in space. The irradiation tests and measurements are based on international standards. In addition, Fraunhofer INT advises companies regarding radiation qualification and radiation hardening and develops onboard radiation sensors. All services are certified according to ISO The Fraunhofer IOF researches the design, manufacturing, coating, and assembly of modern telescope and spectrometer optics. Metal optics with on-/off-axis aspheres, freeforms and structured surfaces are being developed. Interlayer-free joining techniques allow the production of GRISM and PGP in highly transparent and highly pure fused silica materials. Especially for applications in earth observation and planetary exploration in the spectral frequency range between UV and IR, components and systems are optimized in terms of optical quality, weight, and mechanical stability. 6 FRAUNHOFER IST FRAUNHOFER IWS The Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films Fraunhofer IST in Braunschweig is an expert partner in the fields of surface treatment, coating production, coating applications, coating characterization and surface analysis. The institute s work in the aerospace sector includes developing solutions that allow for improved adhesion to lightweight structures and can withstand the extreme temperature variations of space. At ILA 2018, we will be showcasing: Coatings for conductive metals The metallization of CFRP structures Ultra-precise optical filters Broad-spectrum anti-reflective coatings Dr. Andreas Dietz Phone andreas.dietz@ist.fraunhofer.de Fraunhofer IWS in Dresden conducts application-oriented research in manufacturing and testing technology for the aerospace industry. Our expertise includes the development and optimization of friction stir welding (FSW) for aerospace materials; laser beam cutting, ablation and joining of fiber-reinforced polymers and metal-fiber laminates; laser deposition welding for repairs and additive techniques; and the production of protective and functional coatings. We are also actively involved in the development of processes and simulations relating to the creep forming of exterior elements. At ILA 2018, we will be showcasing: A pressure bulkhead demonstrator (AlMgSc), FSW and creep forming Large-scale surface treatment of glass-fiber metal laminates (GLARE) 3D friction stir welding (FSW) of large components Additive and repair techniques for engine components Dr. Jens Standfuß Phone jens.standfuss@iws.fraunhofer.de
