1 User Security Overview Overview User security in any software system is critical to maintaining the integrity of the data contained within the system. ExamSoft security is no different; which is why we have created an extensive array of options to allow you to create the perfect mix of user security settings meet you institutional needs. Whether you need accounts for Teaching Assistants, Administrative Assistants, Course Directors or Exam Proctors, we have the configurations available in our newly redesigned User Security Module. Security Basics Let s start by looking at the security options included in ExamSoft user accounts: Read-Only Create/Edit Approve(Question Post (Assessment Score (Assessment Track (Assessment Full The user will only be able to see the Questions or Assessments in the folders to which they have been given access, but not perform any other actions. In the case of Categories, this setting will allow the user to see and label questions with the Category that they have been granted access. This permission will give the user the ability to create and edit new categories and folders, subcategories and subfolders, as well as questions and assessments in the folders to which they are provided access. They can also delete these same objects as well. This allows the user to approve questions. By approving a question, it is now available for use on an assessment as questions in Draft status are not eligible for inclusion on assessments. This option will allow the user to Post an assessment. This means that the exam will be available for students to download to their laptops or ipads. The Score option will allow the user to view and score assessments within the folder to which they have been granted access. Some of the scoring rights that are associated with this permission are the ability to adjust answers, produce student and assessment reports and release results to students. This option will allow the user to follow the Exam Taker s activity for the assessments that are located in the folders to which they have been granted access. This option will provide complete access to everything located inside of a folder and will also allow the user to share access rights with other users. Account Configurations Using the above security options, you can configure user accounts in many different ways, to fit many different needs. Each distinct content section Categories, Questions and Assessments have their own settings and therefore, can be configured independently from one another. This provides the greatest amount of flexibility when creating new user accounts.

2 Let s take a look at some of the most common scenarios for user accounts and the specific settings that are applicable to each: Type: Account Administrator Access: Ability to import students and courses, and to enroll students into courses. Can also create other non-administrator accounts, including the ability to clear an Exam Taker s upload record. Type: General Faculty Access: Various permissions to Categories, Questions and Assessments. These settings can be customized by each folder in the database. NO admin access

3 Type: Assessment Proctor Access: Can only see the Download and Upload history of the Exam Takers enrolled in the course. NO Admin, Questions or Categories access Type: Course Director Access: Ability to create, post and score Assessments. Can also create/edit and approve Questions for specific Course folder. View access in Categories

4 Type: Essay Grader Access: Essay questions in specific Assessment Folders Only

5 Type: Course Assistant Access: Limited Access in Questions Folder These are just a few common examples of the types of user accounts that you can create in the Users menu.
