1 Digital Sonic Anemometer Cables and the SmartFlux 2 and 3 Systems Installation Guide The cables described here are used to connect the Gill WindMaster, WindMaster Pro, HS-50, Campbell Scientific CSAT3, or CSAT3B sonic anemometers to the SmartFlux 2 and 3 Systems. We also describe USB adapter cables that are used to connect an anemometer to a computer for changing or viewing anemometer settings. The sonic anemometer cable should be connected to one of these connectors. Data and USB Cables Table 1 gives all data and power cables that are available for anemometers. Table 1. The three ports are the same except that port 1 has CTS and RTS signals required by the CSAT3 anemometer. 2 Using the WindMaster or WindMaster Pro Cables Cable number is to connect the WindMaster/Pro to the SmartFlux 2 and 3 systems. Table 4. Use a computer running a terminal program such as Tera Term, HyperTerminal, or Putty. To connect the anemometer to a computer, attach bare leads of the USB-to-RS-422 adapter cable ( ) to the same terminal strip where the data/power cable ( ) is attached. Connect the black lead from the USB-to-RS-422 adapter cable and the power leads from the data/power cable to the Power Out terminals on a separate 9-pin or 11-pin terminal strip. The USB-to-RS-422 adapter cable requires a VCP driver, which you can download from Note: Twist bare leads together if they go in the same terminal. Use cable ties to bundle cables together. Table 6. 3 Using HS-50 Cables The data and power cable connects the HS-50 to the SmartFlux 2 Systems. Table 7. HS-50 digital anemometer cables compatible with the SmartFlux 2 System. Connect the black lead from the USB-to-RS-422 adapter cable and the power leads from the data/power cable to the Power Out terminals on a separate 9-pin or 11-pin terminal strip. The HS-50 will not start properly with less than 13 VDC and a 50 m cable. You can also connect the HS-50 to your PC through the optional Gill Power and Communications Interface (PCI) not pictured here. Consult the Gill HS-50 instruction manual for more on this method. 3

4 Using CSAT3 Cables Cable number is to connect a CSAT3 to the SmartFlux 2 or 3 system. Cable number is to connect the CSAT3 to a power supply. Table 10. You can view settings using the Device Configuration Utility from The cable connects to an 11-pin terminal strip. Wire the separate power cable (LI-COR part number or Campbell Scientific part number CSAT3CBL3-L) into the Power Out terminals on the terminal strip. The 11-pin terminal strip must be plugged into port 1 on the SmartFlux System. Table 11. CSAT3 data cable (part number ) and power cable (part number ). Supplying an incoming 24 VDC to the SmartFlux System could damage a CSAT3 attached to the SmartFlux System Power Out terminals. Important: If you need a long data cable for use between the CSAT3 and the SmartFlux 2 Systems, be sure to use the 50-meter cable manufactured by LI-COR (part number ) because it conforms to the requirements for a cable of that length. Connecting to a Computer To connect the CSAT3 to a computer, attach the bare leads of the USB-to-RS-232 adapter cable (part number ) to the same 11-pin terminal strip as the data cable (part number ). Connect the bare leads from the power cable ( part number ) to the Power Out terminals on a separate 9-pin terminal strip. 5 Using CSAT3B Cables Cable is to connect a CSAT3B to the SmartFlux System. A separate power cable is to connect the CSAT3B to the SmartFlux power output (LI-COR part number or Campbell Scientific part number CSAT3BCBL1-L or CSAT3BCBL2-L). Table 13. Connecting to the SmartFlux 2 or 3 System Prior to first use with the SmartFlux Systems, the CSAT3B should be manually configured using a connected PC running the Device Configuration Utility from Campbell Scientific. Connect the bare leads to the Power Out terminals on the SmartFlux 2 and 3 Systems or connect to another power source (9.5 to 32 VDC). Connect the USB cable provided by Campbell Scientific (Campbell part number 30179) between your computer and the circular USB port on the back of the CSAT3B. Note: The data cable is not needed for connecting with a computer. 5
