Metra NET Network description Metra NET network is based on industry standard CAN bus networking system to interconnect different Metra devices. Metra developed several installation devices to make network installation on the field easy and reliable. Network Repeaters ensure longer maximum cable length and almost any desirable network topology. Network Splitter supports standard UTP cabling widely used in computer installations. Page 4
Terminology CAN Metra NET Network Network device (Metra NET Device) Network Controller Network Repeater Network Splitter Network Terminator RJ-45 connector UTP Cable Trunk Line Controller Area Network. Industry standard field bus networking system. Industry standard CAN network that is used for interconnection of Metra devices. Device connected to Metra NET Network (for example: Door Access Terminal, Reader Terminal, Tripod Turnstile, Locker Controller.). Special purpose Metra device that converts signals and communication protocol between Metra NET (CAN) and computer s LAN network (TCP/IP). Device that amplifies CAN physical signals to achieve complex networking topologies or longer networking cable lengths. Device that splits Metra NET Network cable to connect Metra device. Each cable segment of the Metra NET network must be terminated on far end with the Network Terminator (resistor). Standard UTP cable connector. Cable widely used in computer networks. Suitable also for Metra NET Network. Cable wires are defined differently for Metra NET network. Never mix Metra NET Network with other computer Networks. They are not compatible! Main Metra NET Network (CAN) cable line which can be totally up to 1km long and terminated with Network Terminator at the end. Network devices are attached to the Trunk line via Network Splitters and should not be located more than 10 meters away from trunk line. Page 5
Network installation products Network Splitter Used as interconnecting device for Metra NET Network by using standard UTP cable. It is also used to connect Metra device to the Metra NET Network. It is passive device that do not need power for operation. Network Splitter does not need power supply for its operation! It only connects device s power lines to power supply s power lines for easier installation procedure! Connect only 12VDC power to the Network Splitter. CAUTION Do not connect 24VDC power to the Network Splitter! CAUTION Do not connect 230 VAC Mains power to the Network Splitter! Network Repeater 2 Used to join two cable segments of the Metra NET Network. It has two external RJ-45 connectors: IN line is connected to Network Controller side. OUT line is Trunk line for connecting Metra Devices and can be up to 1000 meters long terminated at far end with Network Terminator (the other side is terminated inside Network Repeater on OUT line). Network Repeater 2 is also used in series topology when total length of cable is longer than 1000m. Network Repeater 2 needs Power Supply 12VDC to operate properly which is included in the product package. Power supply for the Network Repeater 2 should be connected through the UPS power supply unit. Network Repeater 8 Used to join 8 cable segments of the Metra NET Network. It has 8 external RJ-45 connectors: IN line is connected to Network Controller side, seven OUT lines are each Trunk line for connecting Metra Devices and can be each up to 1000 meters long terminated at far end with Network Terminator (the other side is terminated inside Network Repeater on each OUT line). It is useful for complex Page 6
network topologies (star topologies) where several cables joins at the single point. Network Repeater 8 needs Power Supply 12VDC to operate properly which is included in the product package. Power supply for the Network Repeater 8 should be connected through the UPS power supply unit. Network Controller / Repeater Mounting Plate for 19 rack Mounting plate for 19 computer rack for 2x Network Repeater 2, 1x Network Repeater 8 and 1x Network Controller NET or Network Controller TCP/IP. With nine additional RJ-45 Metra NET Network connectors. Network Terminator 120 Coloured Black. Used to terminate Trunk line. Single segment can be up to 1000 meters long and connected to Network Controller or Network Repeater. Nominal impedance 120 Ohm. Network Terminator 240 Coloured Blue. Used to terminate dual cable each segment separately. Dual cable can be each segment up to 400 meters long. Both cable segments join at the Network Controller or Network Repeater. Nominal impedance 240 Ohm Emergency Open Push-Button Key protected Emergency Open Push-button is used to initiate Emergency Open procedure for all Electronic Locks connected to Metra NET network. Connects to Network Controller and Network Controller TCP/IP. Page 7
Connecting cable for Metra Devices Cable to connect Metra device to Network Splitter if longer cable needed. Each device comes with own cable from 1 to 1.5 metres long. Available lengths: 3m, 5m and 10m. Mounting Network installation products Mounting Network Splitter Network Splitter can be mounted to a flat surface by a screw through the hole in the middle. The other possibility is to mount it on a flat surface by adhesive label on the bottom of Network Splitter. Mounting Network Repeater 2 to the Network Controller / Repeater Mounting Plate for 19 rack Up to four Network Repeaters 2 and one Network Repeater 8 can be mounted to the Network Repeater Mounting Plate for 19 rack simultaneously. 10 Mounting Network Controller NET to the Network Controller / Repeater Mounting Plate for 19 rack Up to four Network Repeaters 2 and one Network Repeater 8 can be mounted to the Network Repeater Mounting Plate for 19 rack simultaneously. Metra NET Network Metra NET Network uses industry standard CAN network. It is two wire bus topology which means parallel connection to each device. Wires are labelled CANH and CANL on each Metra device. It is important not to mix connection wires for CANH and CANL! Page 10
Network Controller (NTC in this document) is used to translate signals between computer LAN network and Metra NET Network. Maximum length and maximum number of devices are limited on Metra NET Network. See different topologies for exact information. Metra NET Network termination In CAN theory each end of a main cable (trunk line) must be terminated by its characteristic impedance (120 ohm for Metra NET Network). All devices must be connected to main cable (trunk line) with very short cable segments comparing to maximum main cable length (maximum 10 meters for Metra NET Network). For Metra NET Network to function properly both ends of the cable must be terminated by Network Terminator 120. Network Controller and Network Repeater s OUT line already include Network Terminator 120 internally. Therefore only the far end of the Metra NET Network must be terminated by the Network Terminator 120. Maximum length for Metra NET trunk line cable is 1000 meters (connected via Network Splitters to attach to Metra devices). Metra devices connected via Network Splitter must not be terminated and their connecting cable should not exceed 10 meters. Special case is when two cable segments are used instead of one and each cable is not longer than 400 meters. In that case Network Terminator 240 is connected on far end of each cable. Both cables join on the other side at Network Controller or Network Repeater. If Metra NET Network is not terminated as described in this document Master keys may not function and Metra devices may not have full functionality! If Metra NET Network is over terminated by using more than one Network Terminator on each line Metra NET Network may not function properly! Network Repeater and Network Controller internal line termination Network Controller NET is internally terminated by the Network Terminator 120. Network Controller TCP/IP is internally terminated by the Network Terminator 120. Network Repeater 2 has OUT line internally terminated by the Network Terminator 120. Network Repeater 8 has each OUT line internally terminated by the Network Terminator 120. Network Repeater s IN line is not terminated internally since many input lines can be joined together through the Network Splitter. Page 11
Maximum number of devices on Metra NET Network Maximum number of Metra devices connected to Metra NET Network depends on type of Network Controller (NTC) used. Limiting factor is Network Controller s capability to handle several devices not the physical properties of network. type of NTC order code maximum number of Metra devices Network Controller NET NCNET 100 Network Controller TCP/IP NCTCP 100 To extend number of devices on the installation use several Network Controllers! Line topology This is basic topology that must be followed at each Trunk line. Simplest form is direct connection to Network Controller without any Network Repeater as shown below: Simple V topology Used for installations where two Trunk lines (Metra NET cables) are joined at Network Controller without Network Repeaters. In this case each Trunk line should not exceed 400m in length and must be terminated with Network Terminator 240. This topology can be also implemented on each OUT line of the Network Repeater. Page 12

Star topology Using Network Repeater 8 OUT line Network Repeater is terminated internally with Network Terminator 120. IN line of the Network Repeater is not terminated internally. Power supply for the Network Repeater 8 should be connected through the UPS power supply unit. See Appendix 3: Star Topology - Network Repeater 8 and Network Controller TCP/IP for rack mounting plate connection schematic. Page 16
Line topology Using Master and Slave Network Controllers TCP/IP In dual (master/slave) mode two Network Controllers TCP/IP control one Metra NET network. One Network Controller TCP/IP acts as master and the other is redundant slave that takes over the control of Metra NET network in case of master malfunction, etc. Master device is connected to one end of Metra Net Network and slave device to the other. In normal operation only master device controls all devices on the Metra NET Network and slave serves as hot spare and is activated in case of LAN, Metra NET or master device failure and upon failure activation alarm notification is send by Metra PC SW over LAN/WAN network. If Metra NET Network gets interrupted both devices become master and take control of devices connected to their segment of Metra NET Network. See also Network Controller TCP/IP - Technical Manual for more information. Trunk line is terminated internally with Network Terminators 120 build-in the Network Controllers TCP/IP. Network Lines longer than 1 km When Network line is longer than 1 km Network Repeater must be used. See examples for 2 and 4 km Network. For connecting via optical lines, contact Metra Inženiring. 2km Network Page 17
OUT line Network Repeater is terminated internally with Network Terminator 120. IN line of the Network Repeater is not terminated internally. Power supply for the Network Repeater 2 should be connected through the UPS power supply unit. 4km Network OUT line Network Repeater is terminated internally with Network Terminator 120. IN line of the Network Repeater is not terminated internally. Power supplies for the Network Repeaters 2 should be connected through the UPS power supply unit. Connecting Metra devices to Metra NET Network Always consult Metra device s Technical Manual for exact information how to connect it to the Metra NET Network! Trunk line and its termination Metra NET Network trunk (main) line is segmented using Network Splitters where the Metra device is connected to it. Network Splitters are interconnected by standard UTP (Cat. 5) cables forming the Trunk line (main network line). The last Network Splitter is terminated by the Network Terminator. Page 18
Metra device connection via additional Network Splitter Metra devices come with Network cable which is usually 1 meter long and intended to connect device to Network Splitter. If Network Splitter (network installation) is far from the device (not more than 10 meters) additional Network Splitter is needed close to the device to use original connecting cable. Metra device is also powered via Network Splitter as illustrated bellow. Page 19
Power supply is Metra Device s Power Supply and is not needed for Network Splitter operation. Network Splitter only connects device s power lines to power supply s power lines for easier installation procedure! Metra device direct connection Extra connecting cable for Metra device is needed (3m, 5m or 10m) in case when Network Splitter is installed more than 1 meter from Metra device (not more that 10 meters)! Page 20
