6 Workload Manager - Technology An intelligent system that alters the availability of telematics, infotainment, and vehicle warning systems based on an estimation of driver distraction or overload. 7 AIDE (Adaptive Integrated Driver vehicle interface) 6th Framework EU Project Objectives Generate the knowledge and develop methodologies and human-machine interface technologies required for safe and efficient integration into the driving environment of: ADAS Advanced Driver Assistance Systems IVIS Integrated Vehicle Information System Nomad devices into the driving environment. Design, develop and validate a generic Adaptive Integrated Driver-vehicle InterfacE (AIDE) that : (1) maximize the efficiency, and hence the safety benefits, of advanced driver assistance systems, (2) minimize the level of workload and distraction imposed by in-vehicle information systems and nomad devices and (3) enable the potential benefits of new in-vehicle technologies and nomad devices in terms of mobility and comfort, without compromising safety. Implemented, demonstrated and validated in three different vehicles: city car luxury car heavy truck.

9 SAVE-IT (SAfety VEhicle using adaptive Interface Technology) A central monitoring system that integrates data from in-vehicle technologies and controls the information flow to the driver through an adaptive driver-vehicle interface SAVE-IT Integrates Information to Manage Driver Workload Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (2004) Goals: To develop, demonstrate, and evaluate the ability of SAVE-IT to help minimize the safety risk of distraction and enhance crash warning system effectiveness Conduct human factors research Develop operational prototype vehicle Document and disseminate work Three components sensors to assess both the driver s state and what is going on the road. customized interface, able to adjust thresholds dynamically in response to the driving tasks Real-time software processing.

15 Driving Context Aware Devices Polite Phone Polite Driving Behavior Car in Park: The cell phone senses car entry and transfers an ongoing phone call into speaker phone. Mild Cruising: The cell phone accepts only calls on the driving phonebook list. All others are routed to voic . Complex Driving: The cell phone routes all calls to voice mail and retrieves those on the driving list when the driving situation clears. Airbag Deployment: The cell phone initiates a call to a predefined number (911 or loved one) with accident alert, location and leaves the line open.

17 Driving Context Aware Devices Polite Phone Technology An inexpensive aftermarket OBD plug sniffs an auto bus for relevant information. A context algorithm fuses and classifies the driving situation. A proprietary BlueTooth profile discovers and communicates context changes to any compliant device such as the cell phone. The cell phone receives this context and the application designers use it to alter app behavior or enable new apps. The key technologies: Context algorithm Blue Tooth Gadget Profile Distributable, modular software and architecture appropriate for cell phone, handsfree-kit or telematics platforms
