1 Workshop 2 Installing Comm Links In this workshop you will install 24Vac power, Comm5 communications and zone sensor wiring. The 3 devices that make up our Tracker system include a Tracker panel, ZN517 and MP503. You will need the following components to complete this workshop: Tracker Panel Echelon Level IV wire ZN517 Unitary Controller Transformers (2) MP503 Input Output Module Thermistor sensor Zone Sensor Screwdriver References: BMTK-SVN01A-EN Tracker Hardware Installation manual Our Sample Job: The job is a typical application for both Tracker and VariTrac and will be referenced in this and futures workshops. B&R Specialty Metals is an industrial building with metal storage warehouse, an enclosed brazing shop and an office partitioned into 3 work areas. The warehouse area is remained above 50 degrees at all times and at occupancy temperatures from Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. The office area is divided into 3 zones, each with their own thermostats and is occupied between 7:00 and 5:30 during weekdays. The owner wants the ability to override the office area to occupancy conditions during evenings, weekends and holidays. Exhaust fans in both the bathroom and brazing operate during occupancy periods and outdoor lighting and signs are turned on at dusk. 02_Comm Links Workshop.doc 2-1

2 The following drawing shows the devices using in this workshop and illustrates the 24 Vac power and communications link wiring required to build a Tracker system. 1. Disassemble the Tracker panel to gain access to the termination module. Reference: Tracker Installation Manual (BMTK-SVN01A-EN), page Connect 24Vac transformer leads to AC Power terminations (TB-1, TB-2) on the Tracker termination board. Question: Can communications wire share the same conduit as 24Vac? Why or why not?. Note: Field installations require that Tracker be connected to earth ground using termination TB-3 (TB-3 and TB15 are common). For this lab, grounding is unnecessary. 02_Comm Links Workshop.doc 2-2

3 3. Connect 10 kω sensor to thermistor terminations (TB-10, TB-11). This thermistor simulates the outside air sensor typically connected to the Tracker termination board. 4. Install Level IV communications wire to terminations (TB-13, TB14). Connect the shield to termination 15 (A shield may not be required for short links like the configuration in our lab). 5. With the transformers unplugged, connect 24Vac transformer leads to the AC Power terminals on either the ZN517 or MP503. Jumper 24Vac power to second Comm5 device using the gray jacketed cable with the red/black wires. Refer to the drawing below. 6. Install Level IV communications wiring between ZN517 and MP503 Comm5 terminations using Level 4 wire. Reference: Tracker Installation Manual (BMTK-SVN01A-EN), page Tie shield wires together to form a continuous link but do not terminate at the ZN517 and MP503 devices. 8. Connect a binary input (paper clip) across universal input #2 to the MP Record the neuron IDs for all Comm5 devices on the Tracker Comm5 link. Note: Each LonTalk device on the Comm5 link has a unique 12-digit (address) that identifies the device. Its highly recommended that the installer record each neuron ID and its location. Most Comm5 devices provide a label with peel-off stickers that can be placed on job drawings or a table that lists the location, descriptive name and 12-digit ID for each device. 4 10. Perform a resistance test on the Comm5 link. Using a digital ohm meter, measure the resistance across TB-13 and TB-14 on the Tracker termination board. Reference: Tracker Installation Manual (BMTK-SVN01A-EN), page Question: What resistance did you read across the 2-wire communications link?. What is the resistance you should read?. 11. Install main logic board onto Tracker termination board module. 12. With power to Tracker off, remove jumper J1 on the Tracker main logic board. Replace J1 after 5 seconds. Note: Removing J1 clears Trackers stored date and time. The J1 jumper is factory installed to allow the backup capacitor to charge and protect time and date values. This capacitor protects memory in the event of a power interruption. If J1 is removed, time and date information defaults to 12:01 AM 1-Jan Have instructor verify wiring before applying power to devices! 13. Apply 24Vac power to Tracker by plugging in the power transformer wired to the unit. 14. Apply power to the MP503 and ZN517 by plugging in the 24Vac power transformer. 15. Observe the LED indicators on the MP503 and ZN517. Some Patience required! Tracker may require several minutes to discover all devices connected to the Comm5 communications link and complete its normal startup. Question: What is the state of the MP503 green status LED (ON, OFF, BLINKING)?. Explain what the observed LED status means?. Question: List 2 possible reasons why the yellow Comm LED at the ZN517 never flickers even though the unit is connected to the link and powered on... 02_Comm Links Workshop.doc 2-4

5 Note: All Comm5 devices provide the same set of status LEDs. The most commonly observed LEDs on all Comm5 devices are the Status LED, Comm LED, and Service LED. The following describes their purpose and the meaning of their different display modes. Status LED Green ON Power is applied to the device OFF No power is applied, the board has failed or the test button is pressed. BLINKING (at 2 Hz at 50% duty cycle for 10 seconds) when a Comm5 controller is commanded to WINK by Tracker. Service LED - Red OFF The controller is operating normally ON The controller is not working properly or someone is pressing the Service Pin BLINKING The controller is not executing its application software because network connections and addressing have been removed. Comm LED - Yellow FLICKERING The COMM LED flickers when traffic on the link is detected. OFF when there is no activity on the link. 16. Observe logic module LED indicators on the Tracker logic board. Reference: Tracker Installation Manual (BMTK-SVN01A-EN), page Question: Which Tracker status LED is the heartbeat indicating that the Tracker processor is functioning? _. Question: What Tracker status LED indicates an alarm condition exists _. Note: Not all alarms generated by Tracker will cause the green LED to light. Note: The following table provides a brief explanation of Tracker LEDs. Lightemitting diodes (LEDs) and service pin are used for troubleshooting the Tracker system. The LEDs on the Tracker controller main logic board and display module show central processing unit (CPU) status and traffic on the Comm5 communication link and the EIA- 232 connection. 6 17. Install the Tracker display module onto the main module without powering off Tracker.. If the Main Screen does not display, call the instructor! 7 18. Press the View Button on the Home Screen. 20. Verify that all Comm5 devices connected to Tracker display. Note: The SCC and MP503 should display confirming that Tracker has discovered both devices. SCC devices, such as the ZN517, display their zone temperature. MP503s and CCPs display the word More. This display confirms that Tracker has successfully bound to the Comm5 devices sharing its communications link. Question: What is the meaning of information displayed for the SCC device?. 19. Select the MP503 device in the Building information display Question: What information is provided about the MP503 device?. 20. 8 Mark the following statements T for true or F for false: 1. A blinking Comm5 LED on an MP503 usually indicates a bad communications link. 2. Jumper J1 must be removed on the Tracker Main Module during installation. 15. The Operator Display modules is optional and not required for a Tracker installation.
