3 Executive Summary Executive Summary The industrial wireless sensor networking (WSN) value proposition has evolved from simply extending or replacing wired networks to providing cloud connected smart object intelligence. IP addressability to the node, reliable mesh networking, fieldbus tunneling, proven battery lifetimes and new cloud capabilities are now part of the industrial WSN landscape. For the past decade, ON World has conducted phone interviews and surveys with industrial WSN companies across the whole value chain and this report leverages this continuous focus. ON World in collaboration with the International Society of Automation (ISA), completed an extensive survey on WSN with 220 industrial automation vendors, end users, systems integrators and industry experts worldwide. In this report, we compare the key findings from this survey with a previous survey completed in 2012 in collaboration with ISA, HART Communiation Foundation (HCF) and the Wireless Industrial Networking Alliance (WINA). Industrial wireless sensor networking continues to grow in deployments and application diversity. The most recent survey found that while process monitoring is the most likely planned application, interest in machine health and environmental monitoring along with safety and security is growing. In addition, more respondents who are using or planning WSN rank temperature, humidity, flow, proximity and current sensors as more likely to be wireless today compared with two years ago. Between 2013 and 2018, 23 million industrial WSN chipsets will be shipped worldwide. Over this time, IEEE will make up the majority of shipments but WiFi and Bluetooth will increase faster in hybrid and discrete industries. Wireless sensor networks will expand the total market for industrial field instruments by over 20% and new markets or applications that cannot be wired-- will make up 60% of the wireless shipments by the end of the projection period. 4 Executive Summary Growing Wireless Mesh Deployments According to our latest survey, almost 8 in 10 current WSN users have wireless mesh deployments with a growing number of smaller wireless mesh networks compared with our previous survey in This illustrates the growing number of first-time users versus the pioneering early adopters that characterized many of the initial deployments over the past five years. However, IP addressable sensors are considered an important WSN feature and currently used by over half of the surveyed WSN users. 5 Executive Summary Expanding Markets for Sensors By 2018, 30 million industrial wireless sensing points will be installed worldwide. Temperature, pressure and flow will make up 55% of the sensor shipments in 2018 down from 59% in 2013 as other sensors such as position, proximity, chemical and accelerometers increase faster. As adoption expands beyond the initial early adopters, opportunities are growing for new entrants and vertically integrated solutions. Many of these companies (e.g. AwiaTech, Coalesenses, Digi, Eltav, E-Senza, MicroStrain and Nivis) focus on lower costs, IP network stacks and/or cloud based development platforms. Several WSN innovators have successfully focused on the needs of oil and gas producers including Adaptive Instruments/SCADAgroup (Schneider), vmonitor (Rockwell), OleumTech, Zencus and Zedi. A few of the more recent growing niche and vertical markets include wireless gas detectors (GasSecure and New Cosmos Electric), corrosion monitoring (Permasense, RCS/Halma and Scanimetrics), as well as machine health, steam traps and other asset monitoring. Illustrated by recent acquisitions such as Schneider of Invensys, Rockwell of vmonitor, LORD of MicroStrain and Honeywell of RAE Systems, industry consolidation is underway. In addition to advances with sensors and wireless communications, WSN is driving innovations for data analytics and cloud-based platforms that have had increasing venture capital and R&D investments. New Industrial IoT Opportunities Our survey also found a growing interest in wearable technologies such as smart watches, smart glasses, smart clothing and personal safety monitors.
