Provide purposeful focus on college and career readiness skills: self-regulated learning, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. Benefits of the Digital Age Learning initiative include: Equitable digital access among students Effective student-centered learning activities Differentiated instruction Academic student engagement Opportunity to effectively utilize online resources for product creation, communication, collaboration and research Prepared students for typical collegiate learning environments Focused means for learning and collaboration to occur beyond the walls of the classroom and the hours of the school day Empowered teaching to integrate innovative instructional practices 2. RECEIVING YOUR LAPTOP Laptop, power adaptor and case will be distributed on August 12, 13 and 14 during the textbook pick-up sessions. Parents unable to attend these sessions, should sign and return the user agreement to the school by August 23, RETURNING YOUR LAPTOP All district owned laptops must be returned to the Learning Media Center (LMC). Students leaving Barrington 220 must return their district owned laptop to an adult in the Library. Any laptop not returned will be considered stolen property and law enforcement agencies could be notified. 4. TAKING CARE OF YOUR LAPTOP Students are responsible for the general care of the laptop they have been issued by the school. Laptops that are broken or fail to work properly must be brought to the Library Media Center in between classes. The student will complete a tech ticket to describe the nature of the problem with his/her laptop. District owned laptops should NOT be taken to any outside computer service for any type of repairs or maintenance. 4a. General Precaution No food or drink is allowed next to the laptop. Never carry laptops while the screen is open. Cords, cables, and removable storage devices must be inserted carefully into the laptop. Never transport your laptop with the power cord plugged in. Never store your laptop in the case/backpack while plugged in. Laptops must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels that are not the property of Barrington 220. An identification label with the student s name is acceptable on the laptop.

4 4b. Carrying Laptops Protective cases are provided with the laptops and have sufficient padding to protect the laptop from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying the computer to and from the school. The guidelines below should be followed: Other items should not be stored in the carrying case to avoid placing too much pressure and weight on the laptop screen. The laptop must be turned off before placing it in the carrying case to take home at the end of day The case must be used to transport the laptop to and from school everyday. If the student loses the carrying case, the parent/student will be notified and assessed a $25 replacement fee in Infinite Campus. Never move the laptop by lifting from the screen. Always support the laptop from its bottom with lid closed. 4c. Screen Care The laptop screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screen is particularly sensitive to damage if excessive pressure is placed on it. Do not lean on the top of the laptop; do not place objects on top of it when it is closed. Do not place anything near the laptop that could put pressure on the screen. Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover. Do not poke the screen with anything that will mark or scratch the screen surface. Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils). Clean the screen with a soft, dry microfiber cloth or anti-static cloth. Do not put your fingers between the case and the keyboard to move the laptop. This will break the display, resulting in a very costly repair. 5. USING YOUR LAPTOP AT SCHOOL Laptops are intended for use at school each day. Students must be responsible for bringing their laptops to all classes. 5a. Laptops left at home A limited number of spare laptops will be available in each of the core classrooms. Students may use a spare if it is available. 5b. Laptops under repair A loaner laptops may be issued to a student while his/her laptop is being repaired. Students using a loaner laptop will be responsible for any damages incurred while in possession of the student. 5c. Charging your laptop Laptops must be brought to school each day fully charged. Students need to charge their laptop each evening. Repeat violations of this procedure will result in disciplinary action. 5d. Screen Background/Screensavers Presence of weapons-related materials, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drug, gang-related symbols, on the laptop or within its files will result in disciplinary action. The principal, teacher or other staff member reserves the right to check a student s laptop screensaver at anytime.

5 5e. Laptop Left in Unsupervised Areas Under no circumstances should laptops be left in unsupervised areas. Unsupervised areas include the computer labs, unlocked classrooms, bathrooms, and hallways. Any computer left in these areas is in danger of being stolen or broken. Unsupervised laptops will be taken to the Library Media Center. Disciplinary action may be taken for leaving your laptop in an unsupervised location. Each student is responsible for his/her laptop once it has been issued. 5f. Troubleshooting Tips (In-School) 1. Did you allow enough time to connect to network? - Connection to BSD-4 may take a minute. 2. Are you connected to BSD-4? - Hover over the network connection icon in upper right corner to verify connection. - If not connected, click icon and verify only the strongest BSD-4 is checked and nothing else. - If BSD-4 is not present, restart the computer. 3. Problem with a website? -Try a different browser. -Use Google Chrome when working in Google Apps. -Restart the laptop. 4. Frozen laptop -Restart 5. Computer will not turn on or shuts down: -Check battery - did it charge? -Plug-in laptop with available power cord in classroom 5g. Using a Spare laptop 1. First walk through the posted troubleshooting tips on your original laptop to figure out and resolve issues. 2. If the device still is not working, you will have access to a spare that is located in each classroom. The spare is not to leave the classroom. 3. During passing period, you will need to go to the LMC and fill out a tech ticket to describe the nature of the problem with the laptop. Leave the device and affixed tech ticket in the designated area in LMC. 4. You will be responsible to pick up your laptop from the LMC. 5h.
