2 Course Search: A step-by-step guide 1. What is the UCD Course Search? UCD Course Search gives you access to information about your programme, subjects and modules. You can also access the Curriculum Archive for information on your programme from previous years. This is useful if modules have changed and you are unsure whether you have met your requirements. 3 Course Search: A step-by-step guide 2. HOW TO ACCESS UCD COURSE SEARCH STEP ONE Go to From here, on the right hand side, click Course Search STEP TWO You will now see the UCD Course Search homepage. This lists the 2016/17 Programmes at UCD. 3
4 STEP THREE As a Bachelor of Arts student, click the drop down menu titled Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. This will present you with a drop down list of the various Arts Programmes available to you. 4
5 Course Search: A step-by-step guide 3. STEP-BY-STEP EXAMPLES 3.1. Stage 1 BA Programmes For the purpose of this demonstration, we will use the examples of English (Joint Major), English and Drama (Single Major) and French - International Languages. Now that you have accessed the Course Search homepage, we can now find more subject specific information. STEP FOUR If you are a full time Joint Honours student, click DN500 BA Joint Honours FT. Clicking this brings you to a new page where you will find some programme information on DN500 alongside a table outlining the various subject groupings and a list of all the subjects offered to Joint Honours students. NOTE: You can only choose one subject from each group! 5
6 STEP-BY-STEP EXAMPLES: Stage 1: Joint Major STEP FIVE Let s begin with our first example subject choice: English (the steps are the same for each Joint Major subject). In your subject list click on the tab titled English. You will see a drop down menu appear. As a Stage 1 Joint Honours student, click on the option titled Stage 1: English (Subject/Stream). STEP SIX This will bring you to the English Joint Major Course Search page, listing the modules available as Cores and Options for Stage 1. Each individual module will be identified by module title, module code, semester and credit load. Go To STEP SEVEN 6
7 Stage 1: Denominated Entry Follow Previous Steps One to Four (Under How to Access UCD Course Search) STEP FIVE Let s begin with our first example subject choice: English with Drama (the steps are the same for each Single Major subject). In your subject list click on the tab titled English with Drama (Single Major). STEP SIX This will bring you to the English with Drama (Single Major) Course Search page, listing the modules available as Cores (there are no Options in this case) for Stage 1. Additional Subjects/Streams available to you are also displayed as well as modules for future stages. Each individual module will be identified by module title, module code, semester and credit load. Go To STEP SEVEN 7
8 Stage 1: International Languages Follow Previous Steps One to Four (Under How to Access UCD Course Search) STEP FIVE Let s begin with our first example subject choice: French* (The steps are the same for each Modern Language). In your subject list click on the tab titled DN541: International Languages. You will see a drop down list appear. Click on the option titled Modern Languages French (Subject/Stream). STEP SIX This will bring you to the Modern Languages French Course Search page, listing the modules available as Cores and Options for Stage 1. Each individual module will be identified by module title, module code, semester and credit load. Go To STEP SEVEN 8
9 STEP SEVEN From here, you can easily identify the modules listed as both Cores and Options. Beneath the term option, you will see a link titled Show Rule Details. Clicking on this will provide you with an explanatory note clearly stating the number of modules required to be taken out of each list in order to meet subject requirements. NOTE: It is recommended to always view the Show Rules Details option STEP EIGHT Clicking on the title of any module will open a new page, specific to that module. This will address module content, learning outcomes, assessment, pre-requisites (if any are in place) and the options available should you happen to fail the module. Stage 2 to 3/4 BA Programmes For the purpose of this demonstration, we will use the subject combination of Economics and History) Follow Previous Steps One, Two and Three (Under How to Access UCD Course Search) Now that you have accessed the Course Search homepage, we can now find more subject specific information. STEP FOUR If you are a full time Joint Honours student, click DN500 BA Joint Honours FT. Clicking this brings you to a new page where you will find some programme information on DN500 alongside a table outlining the various subject groupings and a list of all the subjects offered to Joint Honours students. 10
11 Stage 2 to 3/4: Joint Major STEP FIVE Let s begin with our first example subject choice: Economics* (the steps are the same for each Joint Major subject). In your subject list click on the tab titled Economics. You will see a drop down menu appear. As a Joint Honours student, click on the option titled Stages 2-3 Economics Joint Major (Joint Major). STEP SIX This will bring you to the Economics Joint Major Course Search page, listing the modules available as Cores and Options. The modules will be separated into Stage 2 and Stage 3 so ensure you are looking at the stage relevant to you. Each individual module will be identified by module title, module code, semester and credit load. 11
12 STEP SEVEN From here, you can easily identify the modules listed as both Cores and Options. Beneath the term option, you will see a link titled Show Rule Details. Clicking on this will provide you with an explanatory note clearly stating the number of modules required to be taken out of each list in order to meet subject requirements. NOTE: It is recommended to always view the Show Rules Details option 12
13 STEP EIGHT Clicking on the title of any module will open a new page, specific to that module. This will address module content, learning outcomes, assessment, pre-requisites (if any are in place) and the options available should you happen to fail the module. As a Joint Honours student, you would now revert back to Step 1 and repeat the step-by-step process again with your second subject. 13
14 Course Search: A step-by-step guide Stage 2 to 3/4: Single Major For the purpose of this demonstration, we will use the Single Major subject History Follow Steps One, Two and Three (Under How to Access UCD Course Search ) Now that you have accessed the Course Search homepage, we can now find more subject specific information. STEP FOUR Within the list of Arts subjects, click your Single Major subject. For the purposes of this step-by-step guide, we will use History. Therefore, out of the list from your drop down menu, select Stages 1-3/4: History Single Major. 14
15 STEP FIVE This will bring you to the History Single Major curriculum for the current year. It will show the core and option modules for your Single Major for Stages 1, 2 and 3/4. Each individual module will be identified by module title, module code, semester and credit load. 15
16 STEP SIX From here, you can easily identify the modules listed as both Cores and Options. Beneath the term option, you will see a link titled Show Rule Details. Clicking on this will provide you with an explanatory note clearly stating the number of modules required to be taken out of each list in order to meet subject requirements. 18 Course Search: A step-by-step guide Stage 2 to 3/4 Denominated Entry For the purpose of this demonstration, we will use the denominated entry programme DN512 (English with Drama)) Follow Steps One, Two and Three (Under How to Access the Course Search) Now that you have accessed the Course Search homepage, we can now find more programme specific information for denominated programmes. STEP FOUR Within the list of Arts Programmes, click your denominated programme. For the purpose of this step-by-step guide, we will use DN512 (English with Drama). Therefore, out of the list from your drop down menu, select DN512: English with Drama 18
19 STEP FIVE Clicking this will bring you to the full 2016/17 curriculum for DN512 (English and Drama). This will show the core and option modules for your denominated programme for Stages 1, 2 and 3/4. Each individual module will be identified by module title, module code, semester and credit load. 19

Clicking on this will provide you with an explanatory note clearly stating the number of modules required to be taken out of each list in order to meet subject requirements. 22 Course Search: A step-by-step guide 4. HOW TO ACCESS UCD CURRICULUM ARCHIVE The curriculum archive is an important tool for students to access curriculum information for previous academic years. Due to changes in the curriculum from year to year, it is important to ensure you meet the course requirements for the year you entered at each individual stage. STEP ONE Go to Click Course Search on the right hand list of options. 22
23 STEP TWO From here, you can access the Curriculum Archive via the text Curriculum Archive in the Course Search text shown below: 23
24 STEP THREE To access your preferred academic year s information, click the box titled Please Choose academic year. A drop down menu will appear. Choose your preferred year and click Submit. Now go back to the step-by-step examples. Choose which option is relevant to you and follow instructions. 24
