1 Ashford University s STEM Day 2018 WEBSITE DESIGN COMPETITION Competition Requirement: The requirement of the competition is to produce a minimum of 4 pages of website based on the Competition Theme. Each individual may create the web pages using ANY available web development tools. Eligibility: No restrictions on eligibility Registration: Registration is implied if a work is submitted Competition Levels: There will be two competition level groups; Level 1 - Beginners and Level 2 - Intermediates. Both levels will be completing sections a, b & d of the theme. However, Level 2 participants are also required to complete section c. You do not need to specify which level you are competing for. If you completed section c of the competition, then you will automatically be considered Level 2 and will be evaluated with the level 2 participants using Level 2 Judgement Criteria. Otherwise you will be considered Level 1, and will be evaluated using Level 1 Judgment Criteria. THE COMPETITION THEME The Competition Theme: 1. My <Music Studio> a. Design a static website b. The home page must interconnect with a minimum of 4 hyperlinks including: i. About the site page purpose of the site ii. About the instructor/s [You may share information such as the instructor s background, and various music genre and instructor s experience with those instruments as well as teaching involvement] iii. Product and service information [You may include information such as Music Instructions, courseware and material, prices to service/goods and their delivery methods] iv. Demos and gallery [You may include some types of multimedia such as images, video clips or audio sounds of music or related material] c. Connect the website to a database and demonstrate proper functionality and cooperation of the website with the database. [Level 2 participants only] d. Create a screencast video presentation using Screencast-O-Matic in which you walk the instructor through your Website functionalities. Be sure to describe the concepts related to the design and management of your website.

Be sure to describe the concepts related to the design and management of your website. Once you have combined all the files to create your Website save the files into a zip folder. Upload your zip folder to Google Drive and your file s link to stemday@ashford.edu. Please watch the following tutorial on how to use Google Drive: Number of submissions limit: Only a single submission per contestant will be judged. In cases of multiple submissions by the same individual, the last submission will be judged unless otherwise is stated by the contestant in advance on or before the competition deadline. Timing & Winners: The Contest period: The contest will be starting on Nov 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. PST, and ends on Nov 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. PST. All participants that complete the contest will be awarded a certificate of completion. The first, second and third place winners for the intermediates level will be announced on Nov 24th via , and the prizes will be awarded to the winners. JUDGING CRITERIA Level 1 Judging Criteria: Part 1: Content, Relevance, Accuracy, Spelling and grammar, Proper content chunking, Adherence to copyright laws Part 2: Aesthetics, Style & Visual appeal, Flow of information, Consistent appearance (look and feel), Readability, Minimalist design Part 3: Design - Compliance with HTML standards, Operative navigation, properly working links, suitable use of multimedia, Browser compatibility Part 4: Usability and Accessibility Written in user language, Minimization of user actions that can be avoided, Advancing presentation of levels of details, Mechanism for Navigation feedback, Effective user guidance, Accessibility (ie. Usable for the visually impaired) Part 5: Presentation - Create a screencast video presentation using Screencast-O-Matic in which you walk the instructor through your Student Portal Website functionalities. Be sure to describe the concepts related to the design and management of your website. Level 2 Judging Criteria: All parts in Level 1 Judging Criteria, in addition to:

Demos and gallery. Submissions: Each individual must submit their work via with the following items: Participant information: Level, name and , in a text document Source code A link to the website A link to the video presentation And optionally any specifics for executing the work The database file (Level 2 participants only) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Will there be any example? A main intention of this contest is to ensure participant creativity. Due to this factor, sharing of any kind of examples have been restricted by the competition designers. Therefore please use the existing instructions and material provided to make a good judgement on the website you plan to design. Can I use Google Drive to submit my site? Please see the submission section for this information. Can I use a different theme? In order to ensure fair evaluation the participants are limited to the contest theme only. Can I contact a Judge to ask any additional questions? You may use the provided to be in touch with the Judges, provide feedback, and or make comments; however, there may be a delayed in response due to the number of participants that maybe ing or asking questions. For the purpose of the contest, please review the information provided. When will the results be available? The results will be available on Nov 24 th. Refer to Timing & Winners for further information. How much time do I have to finish my work and what is my deadline? From Nov 8 th at 11:00 am PST you have until Nov 10 th. Refer to Timing & Winners for further information. Do I need to register to participate? No. If you submit a work you will automatically be considered as a registered participant. How do I submit my final work? See the submission instructions section.

4 Can I submit multiple works? No, only 1 submission per participant will be evaluated. Your last submission in cases of multiple submissions will be considered your final submission. RULES AND TERMS Description of the event: The Website Building Competition is designed to inspire students and to open doors to opportunities in the tech sector. The two days Competition is open to all students. During the Competition, participants will work collaboratively to design a website that addresses a selected real world challenge. This Competition is open to participants of all skill levels: those who haven t programmed at all, those who are programming geniuses, those who have an eye in design and even product management. It will be a great day to learn, invent, and create the future. But not only that, you can use your innovative idea! THE WEBSITE BUILDING COMPETITION OFFICIAL RULES AND REGULATIONS COMMON TERMS USED IN THESE RULES These are the Official Rules that govern how the Website Building Competition (the "Contest") operates. In these rules, "we," "our," and "us" refer to the Website Building Competition. You and Yourself refer to an eligible entrant. GENERAL STANDARDS FOR DEVELOPED WEBSITES The intent and spirit of the Contest is to showcase the skills and creativity of the student entrants. All developed websites must meet the following general standards: The content of your website and any supporting materials must be acceptable for all viewing audiences. We will automatically disqualify any entrant that submits any website or supporting materials that contain text, sound or images that we, in our sole opinion and for any reason, find vulgar, offensive, or inappropriate for public viewing, or that presents us in a negative light. By submitting your developed website, you confirm that, to the best of your knowledge: Your developed website meets the requirements set defined for this competition (Note: The set of requirements will be available for download on the first day of the competition); and The entirety of the developed website is your original work; including but not limited to, the actual code, graphic design, etc. You have obtained any and all consents, approvals, or licenses required for you to submit your developed website. You may use any programming language/scripting language you desire. Important note about copyright: Your entire developed website must only include material (including source code both open source and third party sourced, user interface or images) that you own or that you have permission from the copyright/trademark owner to use. Your developed website may not include copyrighted materials (such as source code, user interface, background music, images or video) unless you own or have permission to use the materials. Your developed website will be disqualified if copyrighted materials are a part of your

5 developed website without appropriate licensing or permissions. If you do use permissible copyrighted materials, you must include the permissions information by citing the artist/creator and license information as per the respective Contest Rules. Note that even material released under sites such as Creative Commons, common open source code licenses, and other similar licensing may need permission or acknowledgement as per the specific license. Note: your developed website will be disqualified if permissions information is not included as per the requirements in the specific Contest Rules. Prizes: Cash Prizes: Any cash prizes will be awarded in US dollars and will be given in the form of check or any other mode of payment. Taxes: Participants will be solely responsible for complying with the pertinent tax laws. All the cash prizes will be given after proper deduction of taxes. All participants will get a "Certificate of Participation". SUBMISSION OF DEVELOPED WEBSITES: Students should combine all the files/source code they used to create the final Website. Then, save the files into a zip folder. The zip folder must follow the following format last name, first name. Students will receive notice from the judges, indicating whether or not the program functioned correctly.
