OBIS-SEAMAP marine megavertebrate geo-archive OBIS-SEAMAP Advanced Search Getting familiar with the interface Dec 26 th, 2013 The OBIS-SEAMAP Team Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences Duke University
Advanced Search Interface Overview OBIS-SEAMAP logo: Take you to the front page Quick Search: Quickest way to find and select your species or dataset of interest Map Toolbar: map navigation and operations The map by default displays gridded summary (#records per unit cell) at a 1-degree resolution. The more you zoom in, the higher the resolution becomes (1/0.1/0.01 degree). You have to read and agree on the OBIS-SEAMP Terms of Use before exploring and downloading the data. Map summary, mapping options and criteria Graph tool bar: Temporal changes of the observations and oceanographic variables Download button: Launch the Download Wizard
How to Get There (1) Option 1: Go to the OBIS-SEAMAP web site at and click Explore more with Advanced Search Click here to get to the Advanced Search Option 2: Directly enter the URL in the browser s address box.
How to Get There (2) If you know the name of the dataset or species you are interested in Enter the name in the Quick Search box and select the dataset/species from the dropdown list. Enter the name in the box. This box is equipped with a live search functionality and return the candidate list while you are typing. Then, click your dataset or species of interest (e.g. sperm whale). Upon selection of the dataset or species from the dropdown list, you will be taken to the Dataset Page or the Species Profile Page, respectively.
How to Get There (3) If you know Numeric ID of the dataset: the direct link to the Dataset Page is where dataset_id is the Dataset ID ITIS taxonomic serial number (TSN) of the species: the link to the Species Profile Page is where itis_tsn is the TSN BOEM Sperm Whale Seismic Study (SWSS) S-Tag Argos Telemetry (Dataset ID: 810) Sperm whale Profile Page (Taxonomic serial number: )
Finding Species or Dataset (1) If you know the name of the dataset or species you are interested in Enter the name in the Quick Search box and select the dataset/species from the dropdown list (the same way as on the front page). Entering a part of the dataset name You can also enter the Dataset ID or Taxonomic Serial Number Upon selection of a dataset or species from the dropdown list, it is added to the Species/Dataset selection and becomes a part of your criteria. The map will be updated to show the observations that meet your criteria.
Finding Species or Dataset (2) If you want to browse species or datasets with more search options and information Click [Search] button in the Species or Dataset selection panel. Click [Search] button to open up the search window. The Dataset Search window displays datasets grouped by provider. You can find datasets containing records of your species of interest or search them by keywords. With the Species Search window, you can browse species through the taxonomic hierarchy with the information such as the number of records in the database. Upon selection of a dataset or species in the right-side tabular pane, it is added to the Species/Dataset selection and becomes a part of your criteria. The map will be updated to show the observations that meet your criteria.
Defining Your Study Area (1) You can define your study area by: Drawing the boundary on the map with drawing tools Entering the coordinates of the boundary Uploading ESRI shapefile or KML that has a polygon of your study area Click [Region] button to start drawing a region on the map. Shape of the region can be: Rectangle Polygon Circle Click here to get the dropdown from which choose the shape. When finished defining your study area, it is added to your criteria and the map will be updated to show the observations that meet your criteria.
Defining Your Study Area (2) To upload ESRI shapefile that has a polygon of your study area 1. Click the right end of [Region] button. 2. From the dropdown that appears, click [Upload]. 3. In the Upload popup, select your shapefile files (.shp,.dbf,.shx and.prj) from your computer. 4. Make sure As a region to extract data is checked. Otherwise, the polygon is overlaid on the map for visualization only (no data extraction). 5. Click [Upload] button. Click the right end of the button to get the dropdown and click [Upload]. Click [Browse] to select the file from your computer. Click [Upload] when finished selecting files. When your ESRI shapefile is uploaded, it is added as study area to the map and the map will be updated to show the observations that meet your criteria.
Exploring What I Got on Map (1) Once you set up your criteria (species, datasets and/or region of your interest), the interface shows you The OBIS-SEAMAP observation data that meet your criteria Summary of the extracted data (#records, #species etc) A list of species whose observations are on the map A list of datasets contributing the observations on the map Individual observation records that meet your criteria A list of individual animals tagged or photo-identified whose records are on the map Summary of the extracted observation records e.g. #species tells you how many species have been observed in the Gulf of Mexico. e.g. Cetacean species in the Gulf of Mexico. Cetacea is added to the Species selection as your taxon criterion. Your study area (Gulf of Mexico) is drawn as a rectangular region on the map. The map displays the observation data that meet your criteria; By default, the data are aggregated by unit cell.
Exploring What I Got on Map (2) To explore the species / datasets / records / individuals on the map e.g. Cetacean species in the Gulf of Mexico. To get a list of species / datasets / records / individuals, click to open up the relevant window.
Exploring What I Got on Map (3) To explore the species / datasets / records / individuals on the map e.g. Cetacean species in the Gulf of Mexico. One or more of the species / datasets / individuals in the window can be highlighted to locate the observations of those on the map. e.g. Killer whales and sperm whales in the Gulf of Mexico. Upon highlighting, the Map summary panel is updated. e.g. There are 8,133 records of Killer or sperm whales in the Gulf of Mexico. NOTE: Highlighting is designed to quickly visualize observation data of species / datasets / individuals of particular interest among others. It DOES NOT alter your criteria. To make species / datasets permanent criteria, add them to the Species / Dataset selection.
Exploring What I Got on Map (4) To see individual observation records e.g. Cetacean species in the Gulf of Mexico. Switch to the Points layer to see individual observation records as a point on the map. Points are color-coded by species, by default. You can change it to by dataset or by individual. To do so, click and Color by popup shows up. If you want to locate an individual record on the map, highlight it in the Records on Map window.
