2 Task 1A I have been asked to create a prototype for Online Interactive Learning to show them that I can produce a suitable product for the education market. The interactive product that I am going to make is going to be about Paris. The purpose of my product is to inform students about some of the main tourist attractions in Paris, along them to see what they look like and find out some information about them. By using the product, students will be able to see what it looks like (form photos) as well as some additional information such as its history or interesting facts. The product will be designed to give them a feel for the French experience at the same time, avoiding the normal stereotypes associated with the country. One other feature of the product will be to enable them to picture where the site is within central Paris. The audience will be school children. It will be particularly aimed at students in Years 7 and 8 who are going to visit Paris as part of their language studies in order to get a feel for the culture and language of France. The product will not be gender specific as both boys and girls will be using it. It will also be produced so that it is easy to use, without the need for complicated instructions on how to use it. There are some usage constraints related to the use of the finished product. Firstly, the product will need to be in English as the target audience will only just have begun to learn French. Although the product will be able to have a French feel to it, the language used will need to be understood by the users. Also, as the product will be used in schools, the final version should be a stand alone product that can be run from a CD ROM or a network location, without the need for installation. This is due to security restrictions that will be in place. The product should also be self-contained so that it does not require any specialist software to view/run it. Task 1B The product that I intend to create will have a number of slides, all linked together from a main menu page. There will be an initial first page containing an animation that I will make with some music that can easily be identified as being French (probably the French National Anthem). This will then lead automatically to a menu page (an interactive map of Paris) which will allow the user to click on different hotspots to go to the different pages with information about the attraction. Each page will contain a button to allow the user to return to the menu page so that they can plan their own route through the whole product. For the attractions that are outside central Paris, there will be some user interaction. When the mouse is passed over their image, the name of the specific attraction will appear and then disappear. In order to encourage and motivate the students to use the product fully, a hidden feature that they will have to find on one of the pages will allow them to access an interactive game which will have a French theme. This will hopefully get the students to use each page of the product, getting them to learn about all of the different attractions covered. I intend to include at least one video in the product so that the users have a range of multimedia components animation, sound, multimedia effects, video, text and graphics. All of the choices I have made have been to ensure that my target audience will want to use the product to learn about the key places they will visit in Paris. I have used a range of different components so that they will find it interesting and the inclusion of an interactive game is intended to motivate them to visit each page. This will act as a little bonus for them. The range of OCR 2008 Task 1

3 multimedia effects used (as well as the timeline effects on the introductory page and on the game) are all aimed at students in Years 7 and 8. Although the product could be used with students of any age, older students may find some of this slightly childish. Task 1C My product will be able to be used in a school prior to a trip to Paris. Many schools organise a trip to France for their students who learn French. When I was in Year 8, we travelled to France for a week, including a trip to Paris. We didn t receive much information about the places we were going to visit so I feel that this would be a good area to focus on. In their preparations for such a trip (run by the languages department, geography department or even as a residential experience), students would be able to use the product to investigate some of the places that they will visit. They will be able to see what the place looks like as well as learning some key facts or information about it. This will help them when they actually travel to Paris and visit the attraction. Other products could then be used to cover other places that would be visited. The inclusion of an interactive game will allow the teacher to motivate their students to use the product fully prior to the trip. A quiz could even be produced for students to use after using the product to check that they have learnt the information. Even if a trip to France isn t run by a particular school, the product could still be used to gain an insight into the culture of France. He use of sound, video, images and text about the main attractions in France make it suitable for this purpose as well. Task 1D Here are my success criteria: 1. The product should present France (and Paris) in a positive light by avoiding key stereotypes associated with the country 2. The product should contain a range of components so that the users get a feel for the attractions covered 3. The product will need to be easy-to-use without the need for instructions at the beginning 4. The sound and video used needs to be suitable and not so long that students get bored with them 5. As the product will be used in schools, it will need to be free from errors, especially spelling and grammar errors 6. There needs to be a clear navigation system that allows the user to go to the pages that they want to, in the order that they want to. Also, they need to be able to get back to the menu page (map page) 7. The game needs to work and be appropriate so that it works to motivate the students to use the product fully 8. It needs to appeal to Year 7 and Year 8 students I will be able to check this by getting my younger brother and some of his friends to use the product 9. All the multimedia effects that I include must work properly or the project will have failed OCR 2008 Task 1

4 Task 2A The main user interface will be an interactive map of Paris, complete with hotspots for the user to click on. These hotspots will cover the main tourist attractions that the product will cover. Some attractions that are outside central Paris PARIS Main map of central Paris with key items highlighted for the user to click on, taking them to a page about that attraction Information about the game Each page that contains information about a tourist attraction will contain a button, created by me, which will return the user to the main menu page (above): The game will automatically return the user back to the main menu page by using a timeline. This will specify that once the user has completed the game successfully, they will return to the map. OCR 2008 Task 2

5 Each screen will have similar layout: Either: Title and text/image/ video Image of the attraction as the background to the page Or: Title and text/image/ video Throughout the page about the tourist attractions, the title text will be created using the standard headline feature, with a colour glow added. Depending on the background colour of the page, it will be in black or white. The main body of text on each page will be Arial, size 20. Again, dependent on the background of the page, the text will be black or white. OCR 2008 Task 2

7 Task 2B Introduction: This will be the opening animation, created in Flash and exported as a.swf file. Map: It will be created using a timeline in Flash. Initially, some text will animate and then some pictures of key tourist attractions in Paris will appear while the text animates some more. Throughout, the French National Anthem will play, fading out just before the animation ends. A timeline will be used in Mediator so that the product moves to the main menu page as soon as the animation ends. Pictures (and links) to some attractions outside central Paris Text explaining about the game The pictures of attractions outside central Paris will be interactive. Moving your mouse over an image will display text saying what it is. Moving off the image will hide the text. In addition to these, the circled items on the map will be hotspots, linking to pages about them. The mouse pointer will be interactive, changing to a hand (like on the WWW) when moved over a hotspot and returning to a normal pointer when moved away from the hotspot. OCR 2008 Task 2

Task 2C Creating a product based on my storyboard will ensure that the project requirements will be met. The product is based around Paris and contains a range of user interaction from the interactive map to the game and the user controls on the video included on the Eiffel Tower page. My interface is effective and easy to use. Bearing in mind that the product is aimed primarily at students in Years 7 and 8, it is straight forward to use and aesthically pleasing. The only instructions given are that they need to find the baguette to access the game and then instruction on how to destroy the UFO. The navigation is straight forward as the hotspots on the interactive map will be highlighted using a shadow and the pointer will be set to alter when the mouse is moved over one of them. In addition to this, the tourist attractions outside Paris will display text saying what they are when the user moves the mouse over them. The use of a range of suitable images and accompanying text will mean that the students will learn some key information about each of the tourist attractions covered. The sound included in the initial animation gives them a bit of French culture and the video included also has sound on it, in a French accent. I will also use timeline effects to make sure that the product works effectively. The initial animation will run without any intervention and then transport the user to the main interface (the map). The timeline included with the game ensures that on hitting the UFO, a message of congratulations is shown before taking the user back to the main interface (the map) again. OCR 2008 Task 2

13 Even from this stage of my planning, a number of my success criteria have been met: 1. The product should present France (and Paris) in a positive light by avoiding key stereotypes associated with the country 2. The product should contain a range of components so that the users get a feel for the attractions covered 3. The product will need to be easy-to-use without the need for instructions at the beginning 4. There needs to be a clear navigation system that allows the user to go to the pages that they want to, in the order that they want to. Also, they need to be able to get back to the menu page (map page) The rest of the success criteria cannot be measured until the product has been created and tested. But I feel this is a good start and completely in line with the requirements outlined at the very start. OCR 2008 Task 2

15 I then edited it to give it a transparent background using Fireworks. I also found a picture of the Eiffel Tower at I then edited it for use as the shooter on the game. OCR 2008 Task 3

16 Animation: I created an animation in Flash, using the timeline to set up the animation of text and graphics. I also added a sound to the timeline the French National Anthem. Sound: I found the French National Anthem at and then edited it to the correct length using Audacity. OCR 2008 Task 3

21 Digital and other images: I took a range of digital camera pictures during a previous trip to Paris. OCR 2008 Task 3

22 Video: A friend ed a video of the Eiffel Tower. I used Windows Movie Maker to edit it so that it was appropriate for use in my product. OCR 2008 Task 3

23 Task 4A I used the export wizard to export my Flash animation. I set a range of options in the wizard to optimise my animation for use in the final product. I set the wizard to compress the animation so that it does not make the final product too large to be transported across a network if it is not used from a CD ROM. I set the JPEG quality quite high to ensure that the quality of the images used in the animation did not deteriorate. OCR 2008 Task 4

24 When I had finished editing the video clip, I used the Windows Movie Maker export wizard to optimise the video clip. I set the wizard to export the video so that it would be suitable for delivery via broadband. This is to ensure that if the final product is used across a school network, it shouldn t cause any issues. The exported file size for the video clip is 2.08MB, with 25 frames per second. OCR 2008 Task 4

25 I also used Microsoft Picture Manager to compress the graphics files to ensure that the final product is not too big. The result of the optimisation was that the files went from 4.36MB to 1.76MB. I also selected all the images that I will use as backgrounds and altered their size to 800 x 600 to avoid the need for resizing them in Mediator, meaning that they will not look out of focus, blurred and stretched. Task 5B The navigation system on my site consists of the menu page and a back button on each page about a tourist attraction. Action required? 1 That the product presents Paris in a None needed positive light When the product is used, you should be able to find out about a number of different tourist attractions in and around Paris. Pictures are shown and information is given about where things are and the history of some of them. There is nothing negative in the product. Stereotypes have been avoided It is very straightforward. The animation automatically goes to the interactive map and the highlighted locations on the map draw you to them with the mouse. The interactive features added so that the mouse pointer alters to show that a hotspot is present make it easy to use. The navigation button on each of the main pages allows easy access back to the start. The sound is the same length as the animation and is appropriate the French National Anthem. It gives the user a feel for France straight away. The video is suitable and appropriate, showing an aspect of the Eiffel Tower. The sound is related to the picture and also sounds French. The video has user controls and can be stopped or started at any time! 36 Task 6C Based on my own testing and the feedback I received from my five test users, I have decided on three improvements that I will make to my multimedia product. 1. I will add a button to the game page (the same as all the other pages) to allow the users to return to the interactive map without the need to successfully complete the game 2. I will add a Quit button to the main menu page so that users can exit the product without the need to use ALT + F4 on the keyboard. 3. I will change the image on the interactive map that represents Disney to make it clearer. Task 6D I have now carried out the improvements and have the final version of my product. I have added a Back button to the game page: OCR 2008 Task 6

System requirements In order to run this product successfully, you will require a Windows-based computer with the following minimum specification: 500MHz processor or higher 256MB RAM or higher 30MB of space on your hard disk CD or DVD drive (to run from the CDROM) 1024 x 768 or higher resolution monitor Sound Card Microsoft Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) or Windows Vista 2. Installation The Explore Paris multimedia product is provided on CDROM, in two formats, neither requiring installation on a PC or on a network. Insert the CD into the drive and the product should start automatically. If this does not happen, open My Computer from the desktop and then the CD/DVD icon: Locate the file Start.exe and double click it: If you want to run the self-executable version, locate the Explore Paris.exe file and double click it OCR 2008 Task 7

40 3. Getting started Once the product has been loaded, an animation will play. Ensure you have the sound turned on. You will then be taken automatically to the interactive map. OCR 2008 Task 7

41 4. Finding your way around Use the interactive map to navigate through the product, using the hotspots. The images at the top of the map are also hotspots, allowing you to access tourist attractions outside of central Paris. Each page contains information about the tourist attraction you have selected. Each page you visit also contains a Back button to return you to the interactive menu. OCR 2008 Task 7

42 5. Playing the game To play the game, you need to find the hidden baguette on one of the pages. Clicking the baguette will take you to the game page. Your task is to destroy the UFO. Do this by using the mouse to click the Eiffel Tower. This will fire bullets. Keep doing this until you hit the UFO. OCR 2008 Task 7

43 You will then receive a message of congratulations before being returned to the interactive map. If at any time you want to exit the game, use the Back button to return to the interactive map. 6.
