1 New IMDS Function: Material Dependent Recyclate Information (for IMDS release 3.0) Currently the recyclate information is entered in chapter 2 ( Recyclate information ) of an MDS. This information is related to the top-level node of the MDS (component, semi-component, material), meaning that it can only be entered once per MDS. Data from referenced data sheets is not transferred or accumulated. Chapter 2 has been optional or has depended on individual customer requirements. Figure 1 Current handling of Recyclate information From Release 3.0 onwards it will only be possible and required to enter Recyclate information when an MDS references materials with certain classifications. Recyclate Information Materials Recyclate information is only applicable to references to materials with a classification in category 5.1., 5.1.a/b, 5.3. or Page 1 of 6

2 Figure 2 Material classifications Another restriction is that this material has to be referenced under a component or a semi-component. When a material_a references material_b, no Recyclate information is entered. However, if material_a (with the referenced material_b) is referenced under a semi-component or a component, Recyclate information is required for material_a (if it has one of the above mentioned material classifications). When a material that has the appropriate classification is added to the tree, the Recyclate information needs to be entered. A separate tab will appear on these materials for the information. For all other nodes created inside the tree (components or semi-components) and for references to existing components, semi-components, basic substances or materials with classifications other than 5.*, this tab will not appear. 3 Figure 3 Reference from a semi-component to a material with the classification 5.1.a In a component, the Recyclate information is only important for materials of a weight greater than 25 grams. In this case, the Recyclate information fields are mandatory (after a grace period). When the top-level node is a semi-component, the weight of the referenced material is undetermined until the semi-component is referenced under a component. To support the 25 grams rule, the Recyclate information for materials under a semi-component is mandatory (after a grace period). The reason why the Recyclate information is supplied when the material is added as opposed to on the material is that material_a in MDS_1 may have different Recyclate information than a reference to the same material in MDS_2. For Release 3.0, the "Recyclate information" entry in the left navigation menu will remain visible but will be greyed out. Should the user click on the Recyclate information link, the following window will appear: Page 3 of 6

4 Figure 4 Hint that chapter 2 has been moved to chapter Viewing/Editing Material Dependent Recyclate Information The Recyclate information screen can be reached by clicking on the tab "Recyclate Information" on the material details. When the tab "Recyclate Information" is clicked, on the right side, the user will see the recyclate information belonging to the selected node in the tree. He is asked if the material contains recyclate which is by default already answered with a no. If the selection is changed to "yes", a valid value must be entered in at least one of the ranges (content of post industrial or post consumer recyclate). If the default value "no" is not changed, the fields remain empty. Page 4 of 6

5 Figure 5 MDS creator edits recyclate information of own references Remark: For an MDS viewer (creator or recipient), the Recyclate information fields are readonly. 1.2 Check Warnings and Errors In Release 3.0, the MDS check window will only show a warning if a Recyclate information material is attached to an MDS in edit mode (version *.01) and does not have Recyclate information attached. However the MDS can still be sent. In a future release, the MDS can no longer be sent (classifications 5.1., 5.1.a/b, 5.3. or and weight greater than 25 grams). Recyclate information for materials less than or equal to 25 grams is not useful for IMDS purposes. Figure 6 MDS check window (grace period) Page 5 of 6

6 To ensure data consistency and quality, the IMDS check procedure indicates an error if the post consumer and post industrial content of recyclate is > 100%. Figure 7 MDS check window with data consistency error 1.3 Recyclate Information in Modules Prior to Release 3.0 modules did not contain Recyclate information. With Release 3.0 this has changed. 1.4 Copying MDSs with Material Dependent Recyclate Information When an MDS is copied (or if a new version is created), its Recyclate information is also copied. This is independent of whether the new MDS (the copy) references the same sub-mdss as the original or the copy procedure created new modules of invisible sub-mdss. This information can be changed later on. 1.5 Merging Old Data Old Recyclate information, entered according to the current implementation, does not contain useful information in the sense of Release 3.0. Therefore, this information will not be displayed any more. It is not possible to update/add Recyclate information in released MDSs or modules. After an MDS has been released (internally, published or sent/proposed), the Recyclate information is read-only. The only exception to this is an MDS in the status modified (after a sent MDS was rejected). Page 6 of 6
