Robo Demo Authoring Standards for Interactive Tutorials content: didactics technical standards templates (draft) 09/2003 Alber 1
RoboDemo for web-based-training (WBT; elearning) RoboDemo is used to create online software trainings and specifically developed for software simulations. Simulations can be self-running type or interactive type (tutorials). The output format (HTML; SWF) runs virtually anywhere, you don t need any control over the learners hardware. Interactive Tutorials Most people learn by doing. In agreement with this RoboDemo allows to add interactivity without requiring programming skills. See the differences between interactive simulation tutorial and self running simulation: interactive tutorials (IT) Enhanced navigation options (selection) Quizzes (Single Choice, Multiple Choice, True or False) Text Entry boxes Click boxes Rollover Captions simulation forward, back, beginning, end, exit Text Entry boxes facultative Click boxes facultative Rollover Captions facultative Feedback (Success/Failure Captions) Tests (Scoring) configuration aspects No mouse pointer (or partially) Frame timing 10 % Caption timing: 0 sec. (if using Click or Text Entry boxes) Mouse pointer configuration aspects Frame timing depends on demonstrated topic Caption timing: depends on text length 09/2003 Alber 2
Didactics - Instructional Design If we create an interactive software simulation we follow the concept of instructional design. This concept starts from the idea that the topic or problem to mediate is the interface in the centre of four learning phases: 1. demonstration of (available) abilities 2. activation of learners experiences topic or problem to instruct 4. integration of acquired abilities in 3. application of abilities the real world / working process Following this concept we apply a user centered design for interactive tutorials (IT), that fulfils the following principles: learners understand what they are doing learners get motivated IT accommodates the diversity of learners IT accounts for the fact that people change and grow as they learn 09/2003 Alber 3
IT Development is Software Development Be aware, that an interactive tutorial belongs to software. This is why we combine the spiral model for software development (content analysis, concept design, finalization, evaluation) with the model for user centered design of interactive software (ISO 13407) during the development process. This ensures transforming didactics into the technical level of development: model ISO and spiral model 0. identify need of user centered design 1. Understand & specify the context of use 4. evaluate designs against requirements IT-system meets specified functional, user & organisational requirements 2. Specify the user & organizational requirements 3. produce design solutions 09/2003 Alber 4
Transforming didactics to the technical level of development analysis of content Reduction on the substantial with regard to: content visualization text animation interaction with regard to content: - make a detailed structuring - plan modularization - plan navigation precondition for the storyboard Example: structuring - modularization - storyboard structuring storyboard 1 topic A 1.1 introduction explanation simulation exercise question module 1 module 2 2 topic B 2.1 introduction : module 3 : module n n 09/2003 Alber 5
Example: storyboard Seq. storyboard is a detailed Screen Text Pict Aud Vid Durat Interact Navig No. script of your interactive 1 Title Name, Intro quit Logo sec year 001.mpg video forw. 2 Applic. Welco App.- forw. and me to Scree -- 3 sec back Text n 1 3 With forward in picture, Expl. Button fig00 Textentry case of info and file 3 sec PR 8.gif question right question 001.mpg you answer : picture Follow fig01 Textbox the 2.gif -- 4 sec n tutorial Example: structure of navigation (plan): Title Screen Screen 1: Info Screen 2: Info Screen n: question 1 navigation: selection go to next page navigation: go to next page go back go to question 1 navigation: go to next page go back go to screen Title navigation go to next page if answer is right go back module 1 09/2003 Alber 6
Example: Content-Visualization - Reduction Teaching the mail merge function of WORD you show this menu and the program dialogs belonging to: information overload focus on basic information Concentrate on the things to teach. Information overload is one aspect to disturb learners concentration. Help the learners to concentrate by reducing information overload! Example: Text - Reduction This is the Airbus People Login-Screen. Enter your data and press ENTER. In case of no access - please call the Helpdesk. Login: Enter your data! 09/2003 Alber 7
Example: Animation - Reduction (Rules) - one animation per screen ( the exception proves the rule ) - one type of animation ( the exception proves the rule ) - animation only, if it makes sense - no games; less is more Example: Interaction Concentrate your interactions on the part you want to instruct. If you ask the learner to open the Word mail merge menu, you prepare following interactions: 1. click: open EXTRAS 2. click: Seriendruck 3. click: Erstellen 4. cick: Serienbriefe 5. click: Aktives Fenster No other clicks or actions! 09/2003 Alber 8
Specify Requirements: user organizational level of knowledge: - know - apply - specifications - layout - roles - control - use (local office, mobile) - learning environment - learning environment learner requirements - level of knowledge: - to know the application - exploring (i.e. knows that the application is able to print) - to apply the application - operating (i. e. knows exactly how to print) - to control the application - can solve problems with the application (i.e. can configurate application and print) influences the content structure, the way to show the content, the navigation and navigational options, the interactive options. organizational requirements - clear the role of users - is there any CLAF/layout guide - where use the learners the IT - when use the learners the IT (during work, mobile, at home) 09/2003 Alber 9
produce design structure of content structure of navigation structure of test interdependencies between test results an navigation example: evaluation - organize user feedback: implementation of notification automatism in the clip to be informed about: - number of accesses redesign - time and date of starting use update - time and date of ending use 09/2003 Alber 10
