3 1 Introduction The journey through design portal frames is a collection of series of HTML files that are interlinked together to form a design sequential process. This was developed as a part of third year civil and structural engineering project to help the user interact with a web based pages to go through understanding the method and concepts behind the Eurocode. This guide has been produced to give direction on how to use the content of the journey through design. 2 Using the design guide This guide is best used in a PDF format. It has been designed using a sequence of design steps to help user finding the way through it quickly and easily. 1) There is a Navigation bar with the contents of the journey processes, clicking on any item within the contents will take you to the specified page (See pages Figure). 2) The methods have accompanying images in most cases each method presented has an image to accompany the task (See pages Figure). 3) Within each step of journey set of guidance sections are provided in the form of hyperlink to specific publication that highlights the process. Some tasks include a link to the button or text that the user should use in order to progress in the method. 4) At any stage of the design journey to return to the main starting page shown in figure 1 click on the university of Sheffield logo. 3

The direct accesses to the design guide homepage can be through the following link ( 4

5 4 Accessing the guide files The Journey through design is provided as a series of PDF documents. Clicking a link will take you to the relevant page in the document. Figure 2- Accessing files 5

6 5 Configure Internet Explorer to display PDF files To be able to get the linked page, the user should configure Internet Explorer to display PDF files as shown in section Checklist If your system has two versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader, uninstall both the versions and then install the latest version and the latest update. Open Adobe Acrobat Reader and click Edit, Preferences. Choose Internet in the Preferences window. Uncheck Display PDF in browser option and close the dialog. Repeat the same and this time, enable the Display PDF in browser option. 5.2 Step for configuration 1. Open Internet Explorer, Tools menu, Manage Add-ons 2. In the Manage Add-ons dialog, select Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer 3. Make sure Adobe Acrobat Control for ActiveX (pdf.ocx) is enabled. If it's disabled, enable the add-on and restart Internet Explorer. Figure 3- Configuring Internet explorer to view PDF 6

7 6 Using Construction of portal frames page This stage of journey is based on MPEG videos obtained from Corus Construction and industrial company. The windows media player and real player should be able to play them once the relevant box is clicked as shown in figure 4. 8 7 Using connection design page This page gives guidance on element/connection design by using a portal frame sketch and linking various element and connection points to a relevant web page that contains the relevant information for designing that specific element or connection as shown if figure 27.
