1 Welcome to International Trade and Market Access Online WTO trade statistics illustrated This application aims to illustrate all available WTO trade statistics through graphs and charts in an interactive manner. The application features all data on merchandise and commercial services trade, and data published on the WTO Tariff Profiles. MIDDLE SELECTION PANEL The middle panel contains a selection panel whereby users are able to select a reporting entity (from now on known as "reporters"), and the reporter's partner entity (from now on, noted as "partners") for which data is available. C. BOTTOM SELECTION PANEL The bottom panel shows all the variables selected in the top and middle panels, as well as the resulting value of trade with the partner selected from the partner dropdown list in the middle panel. It will also show accompanying explanatory notes on the data methodology of the selected reporting entity, if applicable. II. REPORTING AND PARTNER ENTITIES A. REPORTING COUNTRIES, REGIONS AND GROUPS ("REPORTERS") 1. Reporters could be selected from the left and center dropdown lists of the middle selection panel. These could either be: a) Countries belonging to a specific region Select button "Economic region" and "All countries" in the reporter dropdown list. b) Countries belonging to a specific economic grouping Select "Region" and "All countries" in the reporter dropdown list. c) The World Select either "Economic grouping" or "Region" buttons and "All countries" in the reporter dropdown list. d) An individual country An individual country may be selected as a reporter through either of the following ways: i. Clicking on the country in the data table below the map (see III.B below for details) iv. Clicking on the country in the bar chart next to the data table (see III.C below for details) 2. In the map, reporters are represented as bubbles. a) If the trade flow is exports, reporters are blue bubbles. b) If the trade flow is imports, reporters are red bubbles. 2
3 3. In the bottom selection panel, a) If the selected reporter is an economic group or a region, and "All Countries" is selected in the reporter dropdown list, the value of trade that will be shown is the value of trade of the economic group or region with the partner selected in the partner dropdown list in the middle panel. b) Consequently, if the selected reporter is an individual country, the value of trade that will be shown is the value of trade of the reporter with the partner selected in the partner dropdown list in the middle panel. B. PARTNER COUNTRIES AND GROUPS ("PARTNERS") 1. Partners of a selected reporter could be selected from the partner dropdown list in the right side of the middle selection panel. The partner dropdown list varies according to data availability of the selected reporters. 2. In the map, partners are represented as yellow squares. III. THE VISUALIZATIONS AND THEIR FUNCTIONALITIES: A. WORLD MAP A world map shows the geographical location of the reporters and partners specified in the selection panels. 1. By selecting an economic group or region and "All countries" in the reporter dropdown list of the middle selection panel of the dashboard, the member countries of the economic group or region will be represented as bubbles in the map. a. When hovering (put the mouse over) over the bubbles of the selected reporting economic group or region, each bubble will show a tooltip (or dialog box) containing information on the reporter's WTO membership status, the selected type of trade, year, commodity/sector and partner, the resulting value of trade with the partner selected in the partner dropdown list in the middle selection panel, as well as methodological notes of the reporter, if applicable. b. The partner that will appear in the partner dropdown list in the middle selection 3
4 panel will be "World". If another partner other than "World" is selected, both reporter (bubble) and partner (square) will appear connected by an arrow. i. Each partner (or square) may be "hovered" and will show a "tooltip" containing information on the selected partner's WTO membership status, the selected type of trade, year, commodity or sector, and the resulting value of trade with the reporter. ii. The arrow connecting the square and the bubble will also show the same tooltip. iii. The partners or squares are sized according to value of trade with the reporter. iv. Country labels of the partner countries of the reporting country will also appear. Upon hovering over them, a tooltip will show the selected partner's WTO membership status, the selected type of trade, year, commodity or sector, and the resulting value of trade with the reporter. v. Arrows for export trade flows are red and arrows for import trade flows are blue. b.
