1 Welcome to overview of the Standards tab of RAD-IT Tool. This training is designed for transportation professionals who want to understand how to use RAD-IT tool to create regional and project ITS architectures. The training discusses how to use the RAD-IT tool and provides a basic overview of the tool that has been developed to support ARC-IT use. 10-1

2 In this session, we will review the use of RAD-IT to map the interfaces of the regional or project architecture to ITS Standards. At the end of this session, you will be able to: Explain the relationship of ITS standards to architecture Describe how to access and modify ITS standards information This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. 10-2

3 ITS Standards address interfaces between ITS elements. When stakeholders have reached consensus on the interfaces (information flows) between each pair of elements in the Regional or Project ITS Architecture, then a set of standards can be identified for many of these flows. For RAD-IT to be able to identify the applicable ITS standards of an architecture, the interfaces between ITS inventory elements must be identified (which require that the inventory of ITS elements be identified). Inventory of ITS elements was discussed in Session 5 and the interfaces between them in Session 9 of this course. 4 The FHWA Rule and FTA Policy requires that all regional ITS architectures identify the applicable ITS standards that support regional and national interoperability. One of the primary purposes for developing and using an architecture is to consider common standards across the region so interoperability is possible. ITS projects, according to Rule also have to include an identification of applicable ITS standards. 10-4

5 ITS standards are mapped to the interfaces of the ARC-IT. In the example shown, the flow incident information represents information traveling from the Traffic Management Center to the Emergency Management Center. Appropriate ITS standards are mapped to information flows in ARC-IT so when you create your architecture, and use information flows from ARC-IT, RAD-IT provides you with a list of potential ITS standards. It is important to note that though most information flows of the ARC-IT have ITS standards associated with them, there are a few that do not. 10-5

6 Standards are identified on the ninth tab of RAD-IT labeled Standards. The Standards tab in RAD-IT 8.0 does not provide the opportunity to customize how ITS Standards activities best apply to your situation. However there are ways to generate outputs of the Standards mappings in this version that will satisfy the requirements for Rule 940 and to be able to scope your project. Use the Standards table from the Output / Tables menu to export a listing of the standards associated with the information flows in your architecture either the region or project architectures. If you are working on an ITS project, your should use the SET-IT software tool to create and customize a detailed project architecture which includes a Communications View. 7 While the Standards tab in RAD-IT 8.0 no longer provides the opportunity to directly decide which of the ITS Standards activities best applies to your situation you can use the Output Tables function to generate a listing of standards automatically from your information flows. To access this report use the Output Tables Standards Activities, and Save the results to Word or Excel. From there you can customize the generated outputs to suit your region or project needs. 10-7

8 When you are developing a project architecture you should really use SET-IT to build the physical view (e.g. customized service package diagram with elements and flows) and then use the Communications View to review and customize the ARC-IT defined communications standards for each layer of the relevant communications profile. 10-8

9 ITS standards groups were formed as a way of simplifying the presentation of a set of standards that are common across many interfaces. For example, rather than repeat a long list of standards for every applicable center-to-center information flow, a single group, National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) Center-to-Center Standards Group, was formed. With ARC-IT these also include the communications Profiles used in the Communications view. These are some of the common groups or profiles used. 10-9

10 From output tool bar you are able to produce outputs for a completed or partially defined Regional or Project Architecture. To view the Standards output for an architecture, you select Output then tables from the tool bar at the top of the RAD-IT window. This opens the output table window. You can traverse through the categories to find the Interfaces table under Interfaces and Standards Topics. 11 Use the left arrow to select individual columns to include (they will then move to the Selected Columns table). You can also use the double left arrow to include all the columns. To view the report, you select the Open Application button in the Output Table window. The report opens in a new window from which you can view, print & save the report.
