This name more accurately signals the full range of training content and expertise we provide to libraries in the Minitex region. Changes like this often lead to reflection on one s origins, so here s a quick summary. Back in 1975/76, Minitex established what was then known as the OCLC Services program with the goal of enabling Minitex participants to develop a common database of monographs for the region in order to enable and support resource sharing. For many years the primary responsibility of our unit was to equip and assist libraries in their use of OCLC cataloging and resource sharing systems. From the initial group of 18 OCLC cataloging users, we grew to having over 400 libraries using OCLC for cataloging. Although OCLC continues to be a core feature of many of our member libraries activities, our role as liaison between OCLC and individual libraries has changed as technology and options for library services have increased. We continue to be a certified OCLC Training Partner, so you ll see us teaching free courses on Connexion, CatExpress and CONTENTdm as part of this partnership. In addition to training on OCLC services, we also conduct education around general cataloging issues with a recent emphasis on RDA. We ve received many comments from attendees in other parts of the country that our RDA sessions are the best they ve encountered to date. That is confirmed by the high registration levels last fiscal year we offered 21 RDA sessions and had 559 attendees, 3/4 of whom were from outside the region. While we have included metadata and digitization in our repertoire for some time, we will be increasing our offerings in this area, especially on the topic of digital preservation. We are excited that Sara Ring has been accepted for an upcoming Library of Congress Digital Preservation and Outreach Education Minitex Digitization, Cataloging & Metadata Mailing - July/August

2 (DPOE) train-the-trainer session. She s already excited about putting this training to work, so expect to see digital preservation sessions this Fall and Winter. Responding to a need expressed by many libraries in the region, in the late 90s we established a Contract Cataloging Service which continues to provide supplemental cataloging services for libraries needing help cataloging items in unfamiliar formats or languages, special projects or whittling down backlogs. If you d like more information about Contract Cataloging, contact Mark Ehlert (Contact information at the end of the Mailing) As we introduce the new unit name, we would like to reaffirm our commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of libraries in the Minitex region in areas related to digitization, cataloging and metadata, and to thank you for working with us and supporting us over these many years. We look forward to continuing that relationship for many more! The Minitex DCME staff are: Carla Urban, Sara Ring, and Mark Ehlert. The Minitex Contract Cataloging staff are: Kay Beaudrie, Susanne Nevin, and Kelly Wavrin. General Minitex Staff READ Posters Sara Ring, Minitex/DCME We wrapped up our year long 40th Anniversary celebration with an event for current and former Minitex staff. Just for fun, we ordered the American Library Association READ Poster software, took photographs of staff, and created our own READ posters. A few have been added to our Minitex Flickr photostream here: Pictured at right is Jennifer Hootman from Minitex Reference Outreach and Instruction. She is pictured with two of her favorite novels in one: The Time Machine and The Invisible Man, both by H.G. Wells. Cataloging & Metadata RDA Notes Mark K. Ehlert, Minitex/DCME Minitex RDA Forum Survey A survey was pushed out to Minitex listservs a couple months ago to gauge interest in Minitex establishing a series of online forums on RDA. And, 160 people responded! What follows is a summary of those responses: Nearly 100% approved of the idea for online forums, with about two-thirds of them preferring that these take place monthly. An alternating-month schedule was agreeable to about 20% of responders. Those who voted no to the opening question made the point that we already have the Minitex RDA discussion list, along with other online resources such as the RDA-L list, OCLC-CAT, the ALCTS webinars, 1 and so forth. Concerning the style and content of forum contributions, a majority liked short presentations by various library staff. Both panel discussions and open discussions ran a close second. And, there was a much stronger preference for one topic or theme per forum session rather than a mix of topics, which is certainly understandable. As one responder noted, a single focus would promote attendance by those interested in the topic; those who wouldn t be interested could safely skip the session. About 44% were fine with either a mix or a single topic. The question on session length resulted in an even split between those who preferred that the forums last up to an hour and those who thought 90 minutes was a sufficient length. Finally, there was near unanimous consent to the option of recording the individual sessions. I want to thank everybody who took time to answer the survey questions and provide further feedback, which consisted of many comments, clarifications, and suggestions a lot to chew on. Of course, this survey is just a first step on a long road. Various questions have yet to be answered: Should the forums be open to staff outside the Minitex region (which came up a couple times in the survey comments)? How would open forum programs be moderated in an online setting? On what platform and to what audience would session recordings 1 ALCTS webinars on RDA many of which are free are located at: 2

3 DIGITIZATION, CATALOGING & METADATA MAILING and presentation files be made available? Is an discussion list a robust enough mechanism to sustain postforum conversations? Minitex staff will now look into the feasibility and logistics of presenting these events. Our investigation is not a firm commitment that we will go ahead with them, but the positive feedback we received is very encouraging. If necessary, we will put out a call for speakers and forum topics through our usual communication channels. Stay tuned for any future announcements on this endeavor. Authority Records Getting a Facelift By the time you read this, you may already be seeing authority records for names and titles that include a special 667 note informing catalogers more directly, PCC catalogers not to use the 1xx field in RDA bibliographic records, though they are just fine for AACR2 records. 2 The presence of this note marks the beginning of a twophase project to flip some authority records and their authorized headings to RDA forms. (Note that this project does not involve authority records for subject headings.) This first phase will add the note to about 420,000 authority records 3 ; human intervention will be required to convert these to RDA. For the second phase, around 350,000 other authority records will be converted by automated means, such as through macros and various other scripts. Phase 2 is set to begin around early March 2013 and be completed by the so-called PCC Day One for RDA Authority Records March 31, From that date forward, all new name and title authority records entering the LC authority file must be built following the RDA standard. But what about the other 7.6 million authority records? These AACR2 records have authorized headings that are suitable for RDA use and will not be touched as part of this undertaking. However, there may be a project down the road to mark the records as RDA (e.g., changing the fixed field s Rules from code c to code z and adding to the 040 field $e rda ). A nice summary of the project is available at Behind the Scenes, Backstage Library Works blog: 2 The full text of the note reads, in uppercase letters, This 1xx field cannot be used under RDA until this record has been reviewed and/or updated. 3 Numbers vary depending on the source. The figures above are based on those in a PowerPoint presentation by Gary L. Strawn titled RDA and the LC/NACO Authority File available at: The Library of Congress posted another summary to their website on July 31: Project details are available at a PCC Task Group website: August RDA Toolkit Update After a break in July, another RDA Toolkit update is earmarked for the second Tuesday of August (the 14th). In addition to any tweaks to the RDA text, other revisions may appear in the Library of Congress Policy Statements which will be renamed Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements (LC-PCC PS). Keep abreast of any announcements on this update by visiting the RDA Toolkit Development Blog: The Accessing Current Library Policy Statements (LCPSs) site should give a summary of upcoming changes a few days before they appear in the Toolkit: Cataloging & Metadata Fall/Winter RDA Training from Minitex Mark K. Ehlert, Minitex/DCME Minitex continues to offer RDA workshops and webinars through Our new sessions for this coming fall and winter are below. Further sessions may be added, so stay tuned. Courses will be repeated and will continue into RDA for the Seasoned Cataloger: Print Monographs Self-paced Details.aspx?SessionID=405 As goes the Library of Congress, so go many other libraries. This may well be the case come March 31, 2013, when LC moves to using RDA for all of its original cataloging needs. In anticipation of this transition, Minitex is offering experienced copy Minitex Digitization, Cataloging & Metadata Mailing - July/August

Autumn 2012 Series Begins Wednesday, Sept. 5 presentation. Autumn 2012 Webinar Thursday, Oct. 11, 12:30 PM 3:30 PM (Central Time) Winter 2012 Webinar Thursday, Dec. 13, 10:00 AM 1:00 PM (Central Time) Winter 2012 Series Begins Wednesday, Oct. 31 RDA for the Seasoned Cataloger: Audiovisual Materials Self-paced As with other formats, audiovisual cataloging will continue to carry on many AACR2 practices under RDA, but will see some changes too. This three-part, self-paced workshop introduces the new cataloging standard to experienced copy catalogers and original catalogers, aiming particular attention to the descriptive portions of the MARC bibliographic record. Autumn 2012 Series Begins Wednesday, Sept. 26 RDA for the Seasoned Cataloger: Print Serials Self-paced Experienced copy catalogers and original catalogers of serials who have an interest in learning more about RDA are welcome to participate in this three-part, selfpaced workshop. This online training series will focus on the instructions for reviewing and building RDA-MARC bibliographic records. Emphasis is placed on print serials, but e-serials will be addressed briefly also. Winter 2012 Series Begins Wednesday, Nov. 28 RDA Cataloging: Basic Books Webinar Minitex presents this three-hour webinar for those copy catalogers looking only for a brief introduction to RDA and learning some basic techniques to copy catalog books using that new standard. Participants will be given the opportunity to perform hands-on exercises during the Digitzation & Preservation CONTENTdm User Group Meeting Summary, ALA Annual Sara Ring, Minitex/DCME At ALA Annual in Anaheim (June), I attended the OCLC CONTENTdm User Group Meeting. Geri Bunker Ingram from Digital Collection Services presented the CONTENTdm software update. There were also two other presentations: One by Lyn MacCorkle, University of Miami Libraries, about extensive customizations they have done with CONTENTdm, and a demonstration of the CONTENTdm extensions that were developed by an OCLC intern, Sarina Sinick. CONTENTdm Today and Tomorrow OCLC is working towards a next generation digital repository and will also focus on metadata management in a future release. CONTENTdm 6 was released in March 2011 (with patches, the latest version is ) and the major focus was on the end-user experience (new presentation layer, social features, improved image viewer). To continue moving towards a service oriented architecture, there will be a late summer release that will include Favorites (the return of My Favorites), performance enhancements, and bug fixes and a small release in the late fall that will include Search Engine Optimization (SEO) improvements, Favorites, and bug fixes. Then, in the second half of FY13, there will be enhancements to the grouping of collections and to the website configuration tool. OCLC is also starting the next big project to migrate the CONTENTdm server to webservices. Other repositories will be able to make use of the platform too. The focus will also be on metadata management in future releases. They will look to make Collections more flexible, easier to subset, and make it easier to move items among collections. The end goal is to integrate the CONTENTdm 4

5 DIGITIZATION, CATALOGING & METADATA MAILING service into OCLC WorldShare Management Services. This will be a 2-3 year process. For more information about WorldShare Management Services, see: There were a couple of other topics of interest mentioned during the update; the new customizations webinar series and 2012 and 2013 User Group information. Customizations Webinar Series OCLC is now offering a quarterly webinar series focusing on customizations in CONTENTdm. The first session was on May 17. Mark Jordan of Simon Fraser University created a Drupal interface for their CONTENTdm collections, and Jim LeFager at DePaul University customized their CONTENTdm site to focus more on searching. Christian Sarason, CONTENTdm Product Manager, was there to talk about available CONTENTdm Web Services and APIs and show some examples that have been created. You can view a recording of the webinar here: Subsequent sessions will be scheduled in Sept. 2012, and in January and May of CONTENTdm User Groups In case you missed the announcement, OCLC has realigned the regional CONTENTdm user group meetings so that OCLC can more fully fund them and reduce the costs for all participants. There are now four regions: Eastern Midwestern Northern (formerly Upper Midwest) Western The original announcement about these changes can be found here: php/2012/01/19/contentdm-user-group-meetings-in-2012 The 2012 Eastern User Group meeting will be held on August at Penn State University. In addition, there will be a national virtual meeting in late Fall, The 2013 Western User Group meeting will be held at the central Seattle Public Library. The Northern (formerly Upper Midwest) CONTENTdm User Group meeting has not been scheduled yet; OCLC is still looking for a host institution for this region. Making the Move from CONTENTdm 5 to 6 in the Library Lyn MacCorkle from The University of Miami makes heavy use of the CONTENTdm API for their customizations. The customizations Lyn discussed included: Uses a Jquery function to replace default global footer Developed dynamically created index with the API Added a link at the top right of the image viewer to order a reproduction Her slides can be found on the CONTENTdm User Support Center here: CONTENTdm Extensions Sarina Sinick, OCLC intern, developed a set of five extensions (add on features) for the CONTENTdm website. While the extensions have been provided by OCLC, they are not supported by OCLC support. To use them on your own site, you will need some programming expertise. All of the extensions mentioned during the presentation can be downloaded from the User Support Center here: The presentation included a demonstration of each of the extensions. Below is a description of each extension, with text excerpted from the page referenced above. Collection Map Extension Replace the image carousel on a collection landing page with a map that plots each item in the collection. This can be used for collections that have geographic coordinates listed in their metadata or simply information about addresses, cities, states or countries. A marker will be added to the map if the geographic data can be parsed. Each marker has an info bubble attached to it that will contain the associated item s title, thumbnail and link to the item s page. Example: CoolIris Photo Wall Extension Allow users to see more images at a time and move from a close-up view of one image back to a thumbnail view of several images very quickly. (CoolIris is an application that displays images in a draggable photo wall.) Example (Click View Image Wall link, next to Display Options): searchterm/edgewater Park Search Results Map Extension Plot search results in a Google Map that is available by clicking on a link at the top of the search results page, Minitex Digitization, Cataloging & Metadata Mailing - July/August

6 beside the Display Options link. When clicked, another window opens that contains a map with markers. Example (Click View Map link, next to Display Options): searchterm/cleveland/order/nosort Timeline Extension Plot items of a particular collection on a timeline that displays on a custom page. A marker and the item s title is added to the timeline for each item that has a date associated with it. If a user clicks an item, an info balloon displays the title (which also links to the item view), a description, thumbnail and date. Example (Click on the Timeline tab, next to the Home and Browse All, on the Landing Page): WorldCat Search Extension Shows the availability of additional search results in WorldCat. Example (See View More Items link in the left column): searchterm/cover/order/nosort Digitization & Preservation MDL 10th Annual Meeting Handouts Online Sara Ring, Minitex/DCME Over 100 people attended the 10th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Digital Library (MDL) on June 18. The keynote presentation was given by Rachel Frick on the topic of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) initiative. Along with a Minnesota Digital Library update, session topics included regional collaboration between North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin; a Minnesota Reflections panel; Omeka and New Media Consortium s New Horizons reports; an OCLC CONTENTdm mini user group meeting; spreading the word about Minnesota Reflections; and preserving state government digital information. Handouts for most of the presentations are now available on the Minnesota Digital Library website here: OCLC OCLC Adds Linked Data to WorldCat.org OCLC; edited In late June, OCLC announced that it was taking the first step toward adding linked data to WorldCat by appending Schema.org descriptive mark-up to WorldCat.org pages. WorldCat. org now offers the largest set of linked bibliographic data on the Web. With the addition of Schema. org mark-up to all book, journal and other bibliographic resources in WorldCat.org, the entire publicly available version of WorldCat is now available for use by intelligent Web crawlers (like Google and Bing), that can make use of this metadata in search indexes and other applications. Commercial developers that rely on Web-based services have been exploring ways to exploit the potential of linked data. The Schema.org initiative launched in 2011 by Google, Bing and Yahoo! and later joined by Yandex provides a core vocabulary for markup that helps search engines and other Web crawlers make use of the underlying data that powers many online services more directly. OCLC is working with the Schema.org community to develop and add a set of vocabulary extensions to WorldCat data. Schema.org and library specific extensions will provide a valuable two-way bridge between the library community and the consumer Web. Schema.org is working with a number of other industries to provide similar sets of extensions for other specific use cases. The opportunities that linked data provide to the global library community are in line with OCLC s core strategy of collaboratively building Webscale with libraries. Adding linked data to WorldCat records makes those records more useful especially to sea rch engines, developers and services on the wider Web, beyond the library community. This will make it easier for search engines to connect nonlibrary organizations to library data. Richard Wallis, OCLC Technology Evangelist, said: Schema.org introduces an important new standard. Making library information compatible with the rich data sources now being published widely on the Web 6

7 DIGITIZATION, CATALOGING & METADATA MAILING will establish libraries as a major hub in the linked data universe. This enhancement demonstrates the WorldShare Platform vision by exposing rich bibliographic and authority data on behalf of OCLC member libraries. WorldCat has been built by thousands of member libraries over the last four decades and is the world s largest online registry of library collections. OCLC will continue to engage the library community and the larger developer communities to research, discuss and inform the progression of linked data projects on behalf of member libraries. Libraries generate, maintain and improve an enormous amount of high-quality data that is valuable well beyond traditional library boundaries, said Eric Miller, President of Zepheira, a professional services company that promotes the Web as a platform to manage information and is assisting OCLC with linked data strategy. By operating as a kind of switchboard to and from other data-driven resources, WorldCat data can better connect students, scholars and businesspeople to library resources. OCLC sees Schema.org as a timely and significant development toward linked data technology adoption that will provide recognizable benefits for libraries. OCLC Research has been a lead participant in putting semantic structure in the Web for many years, according to Jeff Young, OCLC Software Architect. Schema.org gives us a search engine-friendly vocabulary to describe our complex data environment. It conveniently allows various communities to join authoritative sources on the web, such as Dewey, VIAF and FAST headings, using the same structures. Further demonstrating its role in providing linked library data, OCLC has recently announced that the full set of DDC 23 more than 23,000 assignable numbers and captions in English is now available as linked data. OCLC is committed to the stability and improved functionality of linked bibliographic data. It is likely that such markup may evolve over the coming months as the community develops a common understanding. This release should be considered experimental and subject to change. This linked data release of WorldCat.org is made available by OCLC under the Open Data Commons Attribution License ( summary).
