1 PART 1: Getting Fancy with Column Charts Essential Learning Skills: comparing data, setting up a column chart, changing chart formats including labels, gridlines, titles, colors, and legends. 1. Open a new spreadsheet file. 2. Mrs. Rembold recently polled all the students attending Baker Middle School. One of the questions she asked was, What is your favorite cafeteria lunch? The choices students could select from included hot dogs, burgers, tacos, pizza, or spaghetti. There were some interesting differences when the results were examined by gender. Favorite Lunch Boys Girls Burgers Hot Dogs 70 Pizza Spaghetti 60 Tacos 35 5 Create a spreadsheet file that includes this information. You should have data in cells A1 to C6. 3. Select the contents of cells A1 through C6 and make a column chart. 4. Chart Customization Make the Title of the Chart - Favorite Lunch. Add Axis Titles to x- and y-axis. X= Number of Respnses Y=Lunch Choices Add Data labels to the chart. Make sure gridlines are turned on. Add a Legend to the chart and change the placement of the legend to Bottom. Click on one of the columns that represent data from boys. This should put a little box around each of the boy columns.

2 Right-click on one of the columns. From the Fill and Outline buttons that appear, choose colors that you would like to use to represent the boys data. Make similar changes to the girls bars. Your chart should look something like this. Number of Responses Favorite Lunch Burgers Hot Dogs Pizza Spaghetti Lunch Choices Tacos Boys Girls 5. Click cell B5 and change the number to 40. Watch the chart as you press Enter. 6. Finishing: In the footer, type your name. Press Enter, and type period number. Go to File and select Save. Save as yourname Excel #2 PART 2: Getting Fancy with Bar Charts Essential Learning Skills: creating a bar chart, comparing two groups of data, adding clip art, changing alignment in a spreadsheet file, chart formats including labels, x and y axis, gridlines, titles, legends, moving charts on the spreadsheet, creating a footer, setting up Portrait format, and printing. 1. GO TO SHEET 2 of your Spreadsheet file.

3 2. Annie and Billy are brother and sister. Each summer, they run a lemonade stand on the corner of the street where they live. In the past, they have worked together and split the profits. This year, however, they have decided that they well each individually run the stand for a week and keep their own profits. Organize the information below into the spreadsheet. Lemonade Stand Annie s Profit Billy s Profit Monday 15 Tuesday 15 Wednesday Thursday 3 10 Friday Format the numbers in columns B and C to be displayed as Currency. You know, Money!! Select the Columns you would like to change to Currency; then click the Currency Icon on the toolbar. You will now see dollar signs next to each amount. 4. Use the information in your spreadsheet to create a bar chart. Add a Chart Title, Axis Titles, Labels and Legend to your chart. 5. Adding Clip Art Go to INSERT and click on ONLINE PICTURE, then in the TYPE drop down select CLIP ART. Find a clip art that would be appropriate for the Lemonade Stand. Insert the graphic into your chart. Forma the graphic so you can resize it and move it around. The quickest way to format a picture, is to Right Click,

4 then choose Format Picture. You may also need to bring the picture to the front, with a Right Click of the mouse, Click on Order, and Bring to Front. 6. Finishing In the footer, type your name, press enter and type period number. Save your file. PART 3: Getting Fancy with Pie Charts Essential Learning Skills: creating a Pie Chart, comparing two groups of data, chart formats including labels, titles, legends, moving charts on the spreadsheet, sorting data, creating a footer, and setting up portrait format. 1. GO TO SHEET 3 of your Spreadsheet file. 2. Ms. Parry recently surveyed the 30 students in her 8 th period computer class. She asked the students, What color eyes do you have? Type these responses into a spreadsheet file.

5 3. Widen any columns that need to be widened. 4. Center-align the contents of column B. 5. Sorting the Spreadsheet data. Spreadsheet programs allow you to sort data alphabetically and numerically. When sorting spreadsheet data, it is crucial to select all of the information that is associated with the data to be sorted. Otherwise, while some of the data may be rearranged, other data will stay in its original location, this is problematic. 6. Click and Drag to select cells A2 through B6. DO NOT include cells A1 and B1 in the group of selected cells because there is no need to sort labels. 7. Making the Pie Chart Select cells A1 through B6. Choose Pie as the chart option. Add a chart title, add data labels as percents, a legend and customize the color to your liking. Your chart should look something like this Finishing a. In the footer, type your name, press enter and type period number. b. Save your File and SUBMIT
