1 Search in the NALIS Libraries This search is performed in the bibliographic database of the NALIS Union Catalogue, i.e. in the bibliographic records for books, periodicals and other types of materials kept in the libraries of the NALIS library network. To initiate this search you should first click on Library search at the top of the homepage, then write one or several words in the search box placed under NALIS Libraries and press on. If you want to search for a phrase, place it in quotation marks ( ). If you use logical operators AND, OR, NOT capitalise them, otherwise they would be interpreted as part of the text. You will retrieve all the information resources that have the two words use and history in their respective bibliographic description. For symbols, use a question mark (? ) to replace one and an asterisk ( * ) to replace more symbols. In the results list you will have all the information resources which have the word woman or women in their respective bibliographic description. Using various search options: Next to the search box you will see another one where NALIS libraries appears. Click on to choose from a drop-down list the catalogue you want to search in: indicates all the libraries which have submitted bibliographic data to the NALIS Union Catalogue; the Libraries of BAS, the St. Kliment Ohridski University Library and Panitza Library of the American University in Bulgaria; the actual list of these libraries is published under Associate Membership on the NALISF website. Results list The results list is comprised of two main parts: The left part is split into three sections: 1. which divides the results list in online materials and items kept in the libraries (without showing which of the letter have been borrowed). The right part is structured as follows: If you misspelled the search word, a Did you mean. suggestion will appear of a similar but proper word. The correct word is a link to the respective results list. What follows is the number of search results and where the search was performed. There are options for filtering and for granting access to the available items only, as well as to the online materials by clicking on the respective link. The list could be easily ordered by relevance (number of words found in the bibliographic record), date of publishing, popularity (frequency of searching), author and title. 4 The results list is structured as follows: A thumbnail indicating the type of the item and its type. Next to the picture a short bibliographic description is given (author, title, publisher, publishing place and date). / indicate the library where you can find the item. here signifies that you can find copies in other libraries. Click on this link to see which ones. Below these data the following panel appears: If you click on the first tab below: you will get to a window similar to the one This option has not been activated yet. 7 this option has not been activated yet. you can use this option to search in external databases (be them subscribed or free). The access to these items depends on the IP address of your PC. The Annals of Human Biology journal can be found in two subscribed databases: Scopus and SwetsWise. All rights reserved 2012 NALIS Foundation 7

8 Chose one of those, press on, then there will be two options: 1. If your PC's IP is in the subscribed IP range, a window with the periodical will open where also some subscribed information will be shown: You need to select a year, issue and the article itself in order to get access to the fulltext item. 2. If your PC's IP is not in the subscribed IP range, you will come to the home page of the subscribed database where you will be required to sign in (otherwise you will not be able to use the full text article). 9 If you want to see the online resource, click on the respective link as shown above. It will lead you to the following list: The item on the top is the one you have looked for and if you have the option for an online resource, you can choose one of the options there or click on the thumbnail in order to see the homepage of the periodical. In the top right corner of our catalogue you will always see the following: this tab always returns you to our homepage; this option has not been activated yet; opens a window with detailed information regarding the free and subscribed resources of the NALIS libraries. This information is displayed in various ways and you wil have various search options: By Title in the list of subscribed and free periodicals you can search by title the whole and/or a part of it after you choose one of the 3 options below: Starts with Contains the default one Exact All rights reserved 2012 NALIS Foundation 9

10 When you click on the Category tab, you will get access to the periodicals grouped in categories and subcategories. You can see what subcategories construct a category and what titles are included in the subcategory. All rights reserved 2012 NALIS Foundation 10

11 The Locate tab gives you an opportunity to find the periodical in the list, searching by title, ISSN, vendor and category. The CitationLinker tab directly links you to the article, if you know the exact bibliographic data related to it, namely: title of periodical, title of article, author, date, issue.
