2 Gerstein Homepage Major Resources on the left of the page list main databases for medicine, nursing, science. Starting Points on bottom left of page take you to lists of databases, research guides, encyclopaedias, etc.

5 Searching for Journals in Databases If you want to use databases such as Medline, PubMed, or CINAHL for your search, you can click on the links under Major Resources on the left side of the homepage. To find other databases appropriate for your search, click on the Search for articles tab in the middle of the page:

6 Searching for Journals (cont) Use the drop-down menu to find your subject area: Then click Go. You will get a list of databases on your general topic.

7 Article Databases Click on the database you wish to use. You may be prompted for your barcode and PIN if the database is licensed for the University of Toronto Libraries.

8 Summon Alternatively, you can do an article search in Summon. Summon is a massive and multidisciplinary unified search index, combining databases, books and journals from publishers, and open access sources, together with our library catalogue and local collections. The Summon index allows deep searching, including full text for the majority of e-journals.

9 Summon - Search Enter your search terms in the Summon search box and click Go. Note that the default is limit to journal articles.

12 Example (cont) Click on the online icon to get to the desired article. You will be prompted for your barcode and PIN if the article is in a journal to which we have a subscription.

13 Saving Citations in Summon To save citations, mouse over the record you wish to save and click on the save this item icon in the upper right corner. View saved citations at the bottom of the screen.

14 Citations (cont) Saved citations can be printed, ed, or exported. Caveat: When would you use Summon rather than individual databases? Summon does not cover all our databases. It is very useful for searching for title AND author, e.g., diabetic care AND hutchings. It is good for quick and dirty searches to find current articles where the topic is interdisciplinary. It s also useful for browsing through citations before choosing a more specific database.

15 Finding Specific Journal Articles If you have a full or partial citation, use Article Finder. Click on the Article Finder tab in the middle of the Gerstein homepage:

17 Specific Articles (cont) If the Library subscribes to the journal, you will get a link (or links) to the issue you need. In this example, you can try any of the links. If one doesn t work, try another. Again, you may be prompted for your barcode and PIN if the subscription to the journal is licensed by the Library.

18 Finding Journals To see if the Library subscribes to a specific journal, click on the e-journals tab in the middle of the homepage.
