2 Getting Started Start Concordance Double-click the Concordance icon on your desktop or Select Start > All Programs > LexisNexis > Concordance 2007 > Concordance 2007 from the Windows Task Bar Open a Database Select Open database from the navigation pane During most training modules we will use the Calfco sample database which comes with the demonstration and full installations of Concordance The Search Task Pane The Search task pane on the navigation pane provides access to several search tools Simple Search Advanced Search Remember, the navigation pane can be Resized by dragging a side of the navigation pane Repositioned by dragging the navigation pane Hidden by unpinning or docked by pinning Simple Search Provides a straightforward method for conducting word and phrase searches Modeled on Google s Advanced Search Perfect for new reviewers Quickly and effectively locates key documents Simple searches search the full text of the database 2

3 Simple Search With all of the words Conducts an and search to find document records that contain all terms listed With the exact phrase Conducts an adjacent search to find document records that contain terms found together With at least one of the words Conducts an or search to find document records containing any of the words listed Without the words Conducts a not search to find document records that do not contain any of the words listed Advanced Search Advanced searches require an understanding of the Concordance search language Search statement is entered in the search box Statistical results are displayed after the search has been executed Two Types of Advanced Searches Full Text - faster, utilizes the full-text index Relational - used for dates, numbers and comparisons Full Text Searches Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT Context Operators SAME - Both terms exist in the same field NOTSAME - Both terms exist but not in the same field Field Limiters.FIELDNAME. - Search term exists in that field..fieldname. - Search term exists but not in that field Proximity Operators ADJ# - Searches for terms in order NEAR# - Searches for terms in any order 3

4 Relational Searches Entered in the format: FieldName Operator Value Operators include: Symbol Abbr. = EQ <> NE >= GE <= LE > GT < LT $ CO! NC WL OL Description Finds document records where the field equals the search value where the field does not equal the search value where the field is greater than or equal to the search value where the field is less than or equal to the search value where the field is greater than the search value where the field is less than the search value where the field contains the search value where the field does not contain a certain value where the field is within the low value, high value where the field is outside the low value, high value Quick Search Advanced searches can be executed from the Quick Search bar The Quick Search bar drop-down list shows previously run searches This list corresponds to the searches appearing in the Search Review Search Review The Search Review provides a list of searches executed during the current session Re-run a search by double-clicking the search or clicking the Activate button on the lower tool bar Edit a search by clicking the Edit button on the lower tool bar Each search is assigned a search number Searches can be combined using search numbers 4
