2 Searching EBSCOhost This tutorial will: Explain different search options Explain how to use the advanced search features Show how to use subject searching Show how to use My EBSCOhost, where you can: Save searches Organize research with folders Gain access to your research remotely

3 Search Options You can change the way EBSCOhost finds information Under the Search Options section you see: EBSCOhost s default search is Find all my search terms

4 Search Options Find all my search terms This mode searches for all the words in the search box Ex.: Bethel College Mishawaka will search for the words Bethel and College and Mishawaka The record (author, title, subject and abstract) will have to have all those words in it somewhere If the record has Bethel and college and Indiana but NOT Mishawaka, then that record will not appear in that search

6 Find any of search terms broadens the search This mode search for any of the words in the search box Ex.: Bethel College Mishawaka will search for the words Bethel or College or Mishawaka The record (author, title, subject and abstract) will have to have one of those words in it somewhere If the record only has Bethel in it, it will show up Search Options

8 Boolean/Phrase searching looks for phrases This mode searches for the words as phrases Ex.: Bethel College Mishawaka will search for the phrase Bethel College Mishawaka The record (author, title, subject and abstract) will have to have Bethel College Mishawaka in it somewhere Search Options The words must be in that order

9 Search Options Boolean/Phrase searching is designed to group phrases together Works best using the terms AND, OR, and NOT Ex.: Bethel College AND Mishawaka For more information on Boolean searching (how to use AND, OR, and NOT), see the Overview of General Library Techniques tutorial

Also search with the full text of the articles performs the search within the text of the article as well as the author, title, subject, and abstract areas.

19 Advanced Search Mode The Advanced Search screen looks like the following: The Advanced Search screen allows for complex searches by: Making it easy to combine phrases with And, Or, and Not Search in specific fields for information Ex.: Mark Twain as author instead of items about Mark Twain

20 Advanced Search Mode In Academic Search, the following fields are available to search (other databases have different fields available for searching): General Fields { Business Related Fields ISBN and ISSN numbers used mainly by bookstores { {

21 Advanced Search Mode Complex searches are made by using the different search boxes while searching different fields Here is an example of a search for material written by Linhart with the word Youth in the title Note: Author is selected for Linhart and Youth is selected for the Title search

25 Subject Searching Subject searching in EBSCOhost begins with finding the subject terms

26 First, search for your term Subject Searching Ignore this area for now Enter term here Then, click here

27 Subject Searching After clicking browse, you will see a list of terms Click on the title to get a description of the term

29 Subject Searching When you are ready to add a subject term to your search, you may do the following: First, check the box of all the subject terms you want to search Then, click Add to add the term to your search This determines how you want to add the term to you search. It uses Boolean terms And, Or, Not

30 Subject Searching Once you click Add, you will see that the subject term has been added to the search box: Click search to perform the search

32 To save searches, articles, etc. remotely, you can create a My EBSCOhost account First, enter My EBSCOhost Using My EBSCOhost Then, either create your account or enter your username and password Since you create your account, you get to choose your username and password

34 Once logged in you will see: Using My EBSCOhost

35 Using My EBSCOhost To save items, first add items to your folder Click here to add item to your folder. Once added, you will see

36 Using My EBSCOhost To view items in your folder, click on Folder

37 Using My EBSCOhost You will then see that item in your folder Once the item is in your folder, you can log in to your my EBSCOhost account to get the item again

38 Using My EBSCOhost Once you have items in a folder, you can create folders and move items between folders Click new to create a new folder

39 Using My EBSCOhost Give the folder a name, then click save

40 Using My EBSCOhost To move items from one folder to another, go to the item select the item you want to move, then click Move to Click to select

41 Using My EBSCOhost Select the folder that you want to move the item to

42 Using My EBSCOhost The item is now in the News folder, leaving My folder with 13 articles

43 Using My EBSCOhost To return to your saved articles and searches, simply logon to your My EBSCOhost account whenever you want and click on the folder button again

44 To Articles You may, if you want, articles to yourself or to others To do so, first add the article that you are interested in to your folder. (You do NOT have to be logged in to your My EBSCOhost account to add items to your folder.) Click here to add to folder Once added to the folder, you will see this

45 To Articles Once you have added items to your folder, click folder to open the folder

46 To Articles Select the items you want to by checking the box

47 To Articles Click the button to articles

48 To Articles Enter your address, then click send

49 To Articles You will then be returned to the folder view To perform a new search, click new search
