5 HydroTel for Windows - Quite a History! First released as HydroTel 2000 (V3) into HBRC - March Win 2000 styled. Update as HydroTel V4 - April Win XP styled. Ten developers involved over fifteen years. Different coding styles and abilities. Database: SQL Server Server Operating System: NT4 Win 2000 Srv 2003 Srv 2008 Srv 2012 Client Operating System: Win 98 Win 2000 XP Win 7 Win 10 Database connectivity: BDE ADO Native FireDAC Development tools: C++ Builder XE XE5 Tokyo (plus MS Visual Studio) Comms. Initially all radio, dial-up etc. Now largely IP and satellite.

10 HydroTel Version 4 - Main Issues (System) Accumulation of baggage in now less or unneeded features, also source code, project files and installer dependencies. Newer Windows version security - installation, support and maintenance issues. File management an ongoing problem. E.g. comms log and transfer agent files. These can accumulate rapidly and eventually compromise the system. Recalling data from loggers to fill gaps is difficult as the logger specific pointers for the start/end of the gap often difficult to determine. Number of components that are now dated / potentially obsolete.

11 HydroTel Version 4 - Main Issues (Client / GUI) Inconsistent and rather dated UI. Controls, dialogs, tab order, etc untidy in places. Support for high DPI and large font sizes not ideal. Grid performance less than ideal. Lookup fields and comboboxes - sort order inconsistent. Redrawing of site objects (especially when multiple, complex ones) unreliable.

12 HydroTel Version 5 Key Differences Is a new product. Version 4 must be completely uninstalled beforehand. ALL components are Win64 for consistency and performance. Designed for Windows 10 but must work well on Windows 7 (and Windows 8). No support for older operating systems (minimum Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2). All folder definitions now full comply with Vista+ security recommendations. Several obsolete agent and utility components have been deprecated. Database tables reviewed for indexing and other performance limiters. SQL queries in code and also views / procedures reviewed and optimised. Version is now based on release date. E.g x = Q4 2017

14 HydroTel Version 5 Simplification Server, Client and Comms Agent TCP port configuration. All port allocations fixed: 211, 696, This was a common support issue when client started from a simple shortcut and no local files. Comms logging categories reviewed. Many Information level messages changed to Warning or Debug to reduce clutter for normal, successful comms. Loggers form redesigned and simplified. Introduced Comms Task dialogue to handle most common tasks, with the same number of mouse actions.

15 HydroTel Version 5 New Features #1 Major engine room update. Core third party component library replaced. Just about everything future proofed: General controls, grids, wizard forms etc. Much improved grids for performance, search and column handling. Access to improved gauges as site view object graphics. Optional themes to personalise the look and feel. District, Site and Catchment are now categories that can be named to suit context. Client main menu rearranged to be more intuitive. New Archiver Agent to automatically handle small file accumulation. Logger specific SOD pointer is retained after each unload to support easy gap filling logger unloads. Site creator tool now supports automated site creation from a HyQuest FX logger configuration as well as the existing cloning function.

16 HydroTel Version 5 New Features #2 Database transfer between server and client is now compressed for faster throughput on slow networks. Image management utility allowing review and if required, resizing of images (District, Site and Catchment).

17 HydroTel Version 5 New Features #3 Dynamic catchment mapping module. A new, registerable system feature. Currently supports Bing Maps and OpenStreetMap ArcGIS (support almost there!). Requires a licensed mapping server. Bing Maps requires a key. Free for < 50,000 total hits per month. OpenStreetMaps is free, but there are T&Cs Google Maps later, if there is demand. Can be expensive to be compliant. Mapping tiles are cached to disk to speed up performance over time. Mapping engine supports considerable future enhancements (dependent on map service).
