What is Crocodoc? Crocodoc is a tool that allows teacher and peer review annotations to be added directly to student submissions of online assignments in Canvas. If Crocodoc cannot convert a submission, Scribd or Google Preview will convert it. Crocodoc supports.doc/.docx,.ppt/.pptx,.xls/.xlsx (in beta) and.pdf file formats. Note: Files over 100MB and password protected files will not be converted by Crocodoc. To Open Crocodoc Click on the Assignments tool. Click on the assignment link for the assignment you want to grade.
Click on the SpeedGrader button to open the SpeedGrader. When you open the SpeedGrader you will see the Crocodoc preview in the submission window on the left [1]. Note: Instead of using Crocodoc, you can also download the original submission through the SpeedGrader [2], grade the submission [3] and/or add a comment in a file, text, or media format [4]. When you are finished with annotating and grading, click Submit Comment [5]. For more information about downloading submissions in the SpeedGrader please see the directions toward the end of this document.
Overview of Crocodoc Tools 1. The magnifying glasses allow you to zoom in and out on the submission. 2. Clicking on the Comment tool allows you to add comments on the submission. 3. You can download the submission file and/or the annotated submission file. 4. You can click through the submission to find the page you want to annotate. To get started adding comments to a submission, select Point Comment, Area Comment or Text Comment from the comment tool drop down menu. To Add a Point Comment On the comment drop down menu, select Point Comment then click your cursor in the desired area of the submission to make a comment. To remove the comment, click on Delete. Or when you see the four-direction arrow appear after clicking on the annotation, you can right-click to remove it.
To Add an Area Comment On the comment drop down menu, select Area Comment and then click and drag the rectangle around the area in the submission you want to write feedback for. To remove the comment, click on Delete. Or when you see the four-direction arrow appear after clicking on the annotation, you can right-click to remove it. To Add a Highlighted Text Comment On the comment drop down menu, select Text Comment then click, drag, and release your cursor to highlight words in the submission. The highlighted area will show a text box where you can give feedback. To remove the comment, click on Delete. Or when you see the four-direction arrow appear after clicking on the annotation, you can right-click to remove it.
To Make a Free-hand Annotation To make a free-hand annotation, click on the Draw tool [1] and use your cursor to draw around specific areas. Choose a color before or after you start annotating [2]. Click on Complete when you are finished marking the submission. Click Cancel if you need to start over [3]. To remove the annotation, click on the annotation and press delete (MAC) or backspace (PC) to delete the annotation. Or when you see the four-direction arrow appear you can right-click on the annotation to remove it by clicking on Remove Drawing. To Highlight Text To highlight text in the submission, click on the Highlight tool then select the text to highlight. Click, drag, and release your cursor to highlight text. You can choose from four different highlight colors [2]. To remove the highlight, click on the highlighted text and press delete (MAC) or backspace (PC) to delete the highlighted annotation. Or when you see the four-direction arrow appear after hovering over or clicking on the highlight, you can right-click to remove it or add a comment.
To Add Text Directly into Submission To add text directly into the submission, click on the Text tool [1]. Click your cursor in the submission where you want to add your textbox and type your text [2]. Choose a color and font size before you click into the submission or after your start typing [3]. The text boxes can be moved around just like in a Word document. To remove the text, click on the text and press delete (MAC) or backspace (PC). Or when you see the fourdirection arrow appear after clicking on the textbox, you can right-click and click on Remove Text to remove it.
To Strikeout Text To strikeout text directly on the submission, click on the Strikeout tool and then click, drag, and release your cursor to strikeout text. To remove the strikeout, click on it and press delete (MAC) or backspace (PC) to delete it. Or when you see the four-direction arrow appear after clicking on the annotation, you can right-click to remove it.
To Download a File in Crocodoc To download a file in Crocodoc, click on the download icon [1] to choose between downloading the original file [2] or the annotated PDF file [3]. The original file will only be the submission without any comments. The annotated PDF file will have all the comments and/or annotations shown. Note: When you download a Crocodoc file, it will be saved as doc.[file format]. For example, if a submission was named myassignment.doc, the downloaded file name will be doc.doc. In order to easily find the Crocodoc file in the future, it would be beneficial to rename the downloaded file on your computer. To Download a File in the SpeedGrader Instead of using Crocodoc, you can download the original submission through the SpeedGrader. To do so, click on the download icon to the right of the file name and open the file or save it to your computer Student View of Submission Details Students see your annotations by viewing the Submission Details. Students need to click on the Assignments tool and then click on the assignment link to open the assignment. To view the annotations students need to click on the preview icon
