Using the rubric Overview This guide will explain how to use the level specific rubrics that have been created to provide generic assessment feedback/feedforward through Turnitin. The BU Generic Assessment Criteria have been reviewed by a cross-faculty working group in consultation with SUBU and EDQ. and introduced for the academic year. The new version supports feedback for learning and provides both feedback and feedforward statements for each mark band at each academic level from 4 to 7. The policy document, 6F Generic Assessment Criteria Procedure, is available from the staff intranet. It is not intended as the only form of feedback and feedforward that students will receive. Using the rubric can potentially release time to provide more detailed comments, in a variety of formats. Accessing the rubric To access the rubric, navigate to the Turnitin Assignments area where you do your marking. Access one of the student s submissions to bring up the document viewer. Click on the rubric icon in the bottom right hand corner. This will display the rubric options for this assignment, similar to the screenshot below. On smaller monitors you may need to use the scroll bar at the bottom in order to see all of the available options for each category. mybu/turnitin Staff guide to using level specific rubrics Page 1 of 5
2 If the rubric hasn t been applied to the Turnitin box you may see the following message. To attach a rubric, click on the spanner icon in the top right corner. This will display the rubric form manager as shown below. To attach the rubric, click on the menu option in the top left hand corner and select the relevant level assessment criteria rubric from the list. Once selected, click on the link button in the top right to attach to the Turnitin submission area. Once attached, the link icon will change to the following. 3 Using the rubric Once you have accessed the rubric there are two ways in which you can use it to provide feedback/feedforward to the student. The first and recommended way, is by using the full rubric view. Click on the arrows icon to the left of the rubric heading This will open a new window displaying the full rubric. From here you can click on the feedback/feedforward text for each category that you wish to award the student. Once it s selected it will highlight blue, only one box can be selected for each category, clicking another box will remove the other in that line. An example is shown below. 4 The second way is by using the numbers under the category headings, if you hover your mouse cursor over a number it will provide you with the feedback/feedforward text for that number in the blue area at the bottom. You may need to increase the size of the blue box in order to see the full text, to do this drag the grey bar above the box upwards. mybu/turnitin Staff guide to using level specific rubrics Page 4 of 5
5 Student s view of the rubric Once you ve completed your marking and feedback has been returned to students, they can access the rubric comments. This is the view they will see when they click on the rubric icon. They can also access the full rubric by clicking on the view full size rubric in a new window at the bottom of the panel.
