1 Introduction The WizISP Flash Programmer application can be used to download binary code to the internal Flash ROM of W7100. It runs under Windows 9x / Me, Windows NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 and Windows Vista as well. Communicating with the target device may be down through a RS232 link or an USB-to-Serial link, depending on the communication media supported by the target device. This software is named WizISP, which stands for: WIZnet s In System Programmer. Its main features are listed as follows. Binary file format supported for data file loading and saving Intel MCS-86 Hexadecimal Object file converter supported Target device control: - Erase, Blank check, Program, Read, Verify, Special bytes edition capability Buffer control: - Data byte modification, goto a specified address, and save the specified buffer data to a file Customizable control flow for quick repeating programming Convenient tool bar, windows hot keys and progress bar 2 Software Installation and Setup The following steps show how to install WizISP to a PC. Copy the WizISP_<version>.rar file to an empty temporary directory. Perform the.rar file extraction so that it builds a WizISP_<version> directory. Open the WizISP_<version> directory and run the Setup.exe file. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. For USB-to-Serial to work, you have to install the proper drivers first. Copyright 2009 WIZnet Co., Inc. All rights reserved. Ver.0.9βeta 3
3 Getting Started This chapter describes how to use the WizISP flash programmer application through its GUI (Graphic User Interface) as shown in Fig. 1, as follows: How to download a binary file to Code Flash memory (see Section 2.1) How to download a binary file to Data Flash memory (see Section 2.2) How to modify the on-chip Data Flash memory (see Section 2.3) Introduction of other special functions (see Section 2.4) <Fig.1> User interface of WizISP 3.1 Programming Code Flash Memory There are two kinds of flash ROM in W7100: one is the code flash ROM and the other is data flash ROM. The 64Kbytes code flash ROM of W7100 stores the user s program code; as well the 256Bytes data flash ROM of W7100 stores the user s data code. This section presents how to download a binary file to W7100 s Code flash ROM by using the WizISP GUI. By using the GUI to download a.bin file to a board or module, the procedure is as follows: Step 1 Connect your PC to the target board using a serial cable or a USB-to-Serial cable. Make sure the target board or module is in ISP mode already (the BOOTEN pin of W7100 should be pulled to high); otherwise, you should put the target device into ISP mode and reset it again. Step 2 Run the WizISP by following the Windows Start menu path: Start > All Programs > WIZnet > WizISP > WizISP for imcu W7100 Copyright 2009 WIZnet Co., Inc. All rights reserved. Ver.0.9βeta 4
Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 In the COM Port Configuration field of the interface, select the PC serial communications port and baud rate for the board connection. Click the Open button to open the selected COM port, and then check if the flash ROM of target device is in Code Mode or as shown in the highlighted part of Fig. 2. If the flash operation mode is in Code mode, goto Step 6 directly; otherwise, select the Code mode and click Set button to put the flash ROM of W7100 into code mode. Step 6 Step 7 <Fig.2> Set Flash ROM Operation Mode In the WizISP interface, use the Load button in the toolbox to find and select the binary file to download. Alternatively, the application remembers previously downloaded files and these can be selected from drop-down list in the right side of Load button. In order to properly download the selected binary file to Code flash ROM, you should use the Erase button to erase the code flash ROM and do blank check by using the Blank button; then, click the Program button to start the download. Moreover, you can verify the programming result by using the Read button to read the code flash ROM of W7100 before clicking the Verify button. The progress of each function can be viewed in the progress bar that is displayed while each function is processing as shown in Fig. 3. When the function has finished, the result will be shown as successful or having errors. If there are errors, repeat the function again. Copyright 2009 WIZnet Co., Inc. All rights reserved. Ver.0.9βeta 5
<Fig.3> Progress bar in WizISP main GUI Step 8 Once the download process has successfully completed, execute any one of the following operations: a) Click the Run button and turn the on-board ISP mode switch off. b) Turn the on-board ISP mode switch off and reset the target device. The downloaded code will automatically run. 3.2 Programming Data Flash ROM W7100 has a 256Bytes Data flash ROM to save the user s data which can be programmed like the Code flash ROM. Also, the data flash ROM can be modified by users directly (see Section 3.3). This section describes how to download a binary file (.bin) to the W7100 s Data flash ROM of the target device. This procedure is as follows: Step 1 Connect your PC to the target board using a serial cable or a USB-to-Serial cable. Make sure the target board is in ISP mode already (the BOOTEN pin of W7100 should be pulled to high); otherwise, you should set the board to ISP mode and reset the board again. Step 2 Run the WizISP by following the Windows Start menu path: Start > All Programs > WIZnet > WizISP > WizISP for imcu W7100 Step 3 In the COM Port Configuration field of the interface, select the PC serial communications port and baud rate for the board connection. Step 4 Click the Open button to open the selected COM port, and then check whether the flash ROM of target device is in Data mode or not under the Flash Operation Mode field as shown in Fig. 2. Copyright 2009 WIZnet Co., Inc. All rights reserved. Ver.0.9βeta 6
Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 If the flash operation mode is in Data mode, goto Step 6 directly; otherwise, select the Data mode and click the Set button to put the flash ROM of W7100 into Data mode. Click the Load Data File button located in the highlighted part in Fig. 4 to find and select binary file to download. Please note that using the Load button in toolbox cannot load binary file for Data flash ROM to download. Use the Erase, Blank and Program button to download the selected binary file to Data flash ROM. Additionally, you can also use the Read and Verify button to read and verify the Data flash ROM. Please note that click the Program button will erase the Data flash ROM before programming, but blank check will not be executed. Click the Run button or turn ISP mode off and reset the target device to run it with new Data memory. <Fig.4> Highlighted Load Data File Button in Main GUI 3.3 Modify Data Flash ROM The Data flash ROM can be directly modified via WizISP GUI. Assume that WizISP is running and the target device is connected with WizISP in Data flash operation mode, the remained procedure to modify Data memory is as follows: Step 1 Click the Read button in the toolbox; after reading is over, the Data memory will be automatically displayed in the Hex Editor as shown in Fig. 5. Copyright 2009 WIZnet Co., Inc. All rights reserved. Ver.0.9βeta 7
Step 2 Click the Edit button to put the Hex Editor into Edit mode from View mode; the Edit button will be highlighted. Step 3 In the Hex Editor, select the byte in the hexadecimal data area as highlighted area in Fig. 6 and input a new value (must be in hexadecimal) for this byte by using keyboard directly. Step 4 After modifications, click the Save button to download the modified data to Data flash ROM of W7100 in the target device. Once the Save button is clicked, a popup dialog as shown in Fig. 7 will come out. If the Yes(Y) button is clicked, modified data will be downloaded to the Data flash ROM. <Fig.5> Data Flash ROM Read Result <Fig.6> Highlighted Data Area in Hex Editor Copyright 2009 WIZnet Co., Inc. 9 3.4 Other Function Yes(Y) No(N) <Fig.7> Popup Dialog While the Save Button Clicked WizISP also provides some useful and convenient functions, such as HexToBin (hexadecimal file to binary file converter), save current buffer to a file, automatically tasks processing, and so on. This section introduces the two main special functions briefly. HexToBin WizISP supports both *.bin and *.hex file load directly by using the Load button in the toolbox. If you only want to convert a hexadecimal file into binary format, you can use the HexToBin button to start the converter as shown in Figure 8. You can use this tool to perform it and load the converted binary file to the program buffer. <Fig.8> HexToBin Converter Interface Save Buffer The current view buffer in Hex Editor can be saved to a binary file directly by using the Save buffer to file button as shown in Fig. 10. The start address and end address of the current buffer to save can be specified via input address value in the From Address and To Address textbox. Copyright 2009 WIZnet Co., Inc.
