3 1. Getting Started 1.1 Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of StreetWise Partner. StreetWise Partner is a Palm Pilot application that provides the field technician the ability to: 1) Transfer settings between controllers and StreetWise. 2) Initialize modem strings using a Palm Pilot handheld device instead of a laptop computer. 3) Act as a standalone temporary repository for controller settings. 4) Download a real-time clock to a controller. 5) Download EPROM s to a controller 6) Use various MMU/CMU functions Get Programming Report Get Analyzer Report Get History Report Clear Report Logs MMU Only Download Real-Time Clock 7) View real-time intersection status StreetWise Partner can communicate to controllers via NTCIP or Naztec protocols. The compact size and low cost of Palm Pilots coupled with the ease of use and flexibility of StreetWise Partner makes it the best choice for managing controller settings and initializing modems out in the field. 1.2 System Overview StreetWise Partner can operate in two configurations: 1) standalone configuration or 2) synchronize with StreetWise. In standalone configuration, StreetWise Partner synchronizes with the desktop computer to obtain a user configurable list of modem strings and ROM files for modem string initialization and EPROM downloads, respectively. It also obtains a list of controller types, which are used to enable StreetWise Partner to act as a standalone temporary repository for controller settings as well as download a real-time clock to the controller. When synchronized with StreetWise, StreetWise Partner has all the functionality of the standalone but can be used to update changes in the field into StreetWise as well as update field controllers with the latest settings configured in StreetWise. StreetWise Partner is synchronized with the desktop computer and StreetWise using the Palm HotSync Manager, which is a part of the Palm Desktop software package. The HotSync cable connects to the Palm Pilot s serial port on one end and an available nine-pin serial port on the desktop PC on the other end. The user then activates a HotSync, which adds all the controllers in StreetWise to the Palm Pilot as well as updates any newer controller settings in the Palm Pilot to the corresponding upload file in StreetWise. The setup is show below: Synchronizing StreetWise Partner with StreetWise/Desktop Computer HotSync Cable Desktop computer StreetWise Partner communicates to controllers and modems serially using the Naztec Palm serial cable which connects to the serial port of the Palm Pilot at one end and the System P-A or Naztec, Inc. 2

4 PC/Print P-2 port on the controller at the other or the 25-pin serial port of a modem. For Controller Settings, select the appropriate controller in StreetWise Partner; select Download to download settings to the controller or Upload to upload settings from the controller. For Modem Initialization, select the appropriate modem from the list in StreetWise Partner; select Initialize Modem. The setup is shown below: Transfer Settings Between StreetWise Partner and a Controller or Modem Naztec Palm Cable Controller or Modem 1.3 The Future The ever-increasing power and memory capacity of Palm handheld devices opens the door to future versions of StreetWise Partner with increased functionality based on industry need and customer feedback. 1.4 Included Parts The following components should be supplied with each StreetWise Partner package: 1 Palm Pilot handheld device 1 HotSync serial cable for the Palm Pilot 1 Naztec Palm serial cable 1 compact disk containing the Palm Desktop Software 1 StreetWise Partner Software Installation Disk Naztec, Inc. 3

5 2. Software Configuration Software for StreetWise Partner is divided into two subsets: StreetWise Partner and the Palm Desktop Software. StreetWise Partner runs on a Palm Pilot and the Palm Desktop Software package runs on a desktop PC enabling StreetWise Partner to synchronize with StreetWise. 2.1 System Requirements StreetWise Partner has the following minimum system requirements: Palm Pilot running Palm Operating System 3.5 or later 2 Megabytes RAM to store 125 controllers (3 EPROM s). For additional storage capacity, add 1 Megabyte for every 60 controllers (2 EPROM s). 1 HotSync serial cable for the Palm Pilot 1 Naztec Palm serial cable The Palm Desktop software has the following minimum system requirements: Pentium Based Computer Windows 95/98/NT Operating System 32 Megabytes RAM 30 Megabytes of available disk space 1 available 9-pin RS232 port (25-pin requires a cable changer) 2.2 Installation & Configuration The two-step installation must be performed in the following order: Installing and Configuring the Palm Desktop Software, and Installing StreetWise Partner Desktop Component. These steps are detailed in the following sections. 2.3 Installing the Palm Desktop Software 1. If this is not the desired path of the client.ini file change the text in StreetWisePartner.ini accordingly. For standalone installations of StreetWise Partner, the installation will add the entry STAND_ALONE Yes to the StreetWisePartner.ini file. 6. Finally, the installation will prompt you to reboot the machine. 17 3. Using StreetWise Partner 3.1 Synchronizing StreetWise Partner with StreetWise Synchronizing StreetWise Partner with StreetWise using HotSync will do the following: 1) Add new controllers from StreetWise into StreetWise Partner (any controllers in StreetWise Partner that are not in StreetWise get deleted); 2) For existing controllers, synchronize controller settings between StreetWise Partner and StreetWise. Sequence for Synchronization For existing controllers, the synchronization logic first compares the timestamps of the Upload file in StreetWise with the Last Updated timestamp in StreetWise Partner. If the Last Updated timestamp in StreetWise Partner is newer than the Upload file in StreetWise, the controller settings from StreetWise Partner are copied to the Upload file of the corresponding controller in StreetWise. If the Upload file in StreetWise is equal to or newer than the Last Updated timestamp in StreetWise Partner, then the timestamp of the Permanent file in StreetWise is compared to the Last Updated timestamp in StreetWise Partner. If the timestamp of the Permanent file in StreetWise is newer than the Last Updated timestamp in StreetWise Partner, then the Permanent file of the controller in StreetWise is copied to StreetWise Partner. Finally, if the controller name or type is different between StreetWise and StreetWise Partner, then the Permanent file of the controller in StreetWise is copied to StreetWise Partner. IMPORTANT: StreetWise Partner will attempt to load all the controllers in StreetWise until there is only 100 kilobytes of free memory remaining on the Palm. If any of the controllers in StreetWise did not load to the Palm it is most likely because the minimum 100 kilobytes of free memory limit was reached. A HotSync is performed as follows: 1. 52 4. Troubleshooting Common Problems and Possible Solutions Problem: StreetWise Partner returns an Error Communicating to Controller when I try to Upload/Download or Download the Real-Time Clock between the Palm Pilot and a controller. Possible Causes: The baud rate of the Palm Pilot is not the same as the baud rate of the port on the controller. The controller ID of the selected controller in StreetWise Partner does not match the ID of the controller in the field. The Naztec Palm serial cable is not properly connected to the Palm Pilot and controller serial ports. Solutions: Set the baud rate of StreetWise Partner to match the baud rate of the appropriate port on the controller. See section in this manual titled Set StreetWise Partner Baud Rate for Transfer with Controllers. Select the controller in StreetWise Partner with an ID that matches the ID of the field controller. Check connection between Palm Pilot and Controller. Problem: StreetWise Partner is not HotSync ing with StreetWise. Possible Causes: The HotSync cable is not properly connected to the Palm Pilot and the desktop PC serial ports. The HotSync Manager is not running. HotSync Manager is configured to use a different COM port than the one the HotSync cable is plugged into. StreetWise or some other application is using the COM port that the HotSync Manager is configured to use. The StreetWisePartner.ini file does not correctly point to the location of the client.ini file. The client.ini file does not correctly point to the Server drive and Server root.
