1 October 2006 Electronic Technology News Gazette Volume 7 Issue 10 A printable version is available at the following address: INTERNET EXPLORER ATTACK CODE POSTED TO THE WEB A flaw in the ActiveX control of multimedia features can be exploited to control a PC or cause Internet Explorer version 5.01 and 6.01 to be unstable. No patch has been made available yet and Microsoft recommends disabling ActiveX and active scripting controls, as a workaround. When an update becomes available, the department will be notified. Source: ZDNet.com EXCHANGE Using the Exchange server can be used to view on the internet, as if you were at a computer using Outlook. The exchange server hasn't been down, as frequently as the normal U-Connect (POP) server. U-Connect can be set to automatically forward POP to existing Exchange addresses. VIDEO CONFERENCING WITH NETMEETINGS A succesful example of video conferencing was demonstrated at the September 22 Animal & Food Sciences faculty meeting. Because NetMeetings is already installed in many operating systems, including Windows XP, it takes relatively little time to setup. By using NetMeetings, audio, sharing applications (like PowerPoint, Excel, and Word), using a whiteboard to draw images, and remote desktop to control another computer are possible. PERSONAL INFORMATION BROKERS Information brokers can compile data from several sources on the web to indicate facets of your life, as home address, phone number, work location, neighbors, criminal history, bankruptcy/liens, property value, etc. Several information brokers are available on the web, as Acxiom, AnyWho, Intelius, People Finders, SwitchBoard, US Search, White Pages.com, World Pages, Choice Point, Lexis Nexis, and ZabaSearch. Many web sites offering these services have opt out procedures that can be followed in order to remove this information. 2 Because of security blocks, the beta version of Internet Explorer 7 has been found to be incompatible with the SAP program the university uses. In 2007, Internet Explorer 7 is expected to be sent to Windows users in a Windows security update. The university is currently looking at resolving issue between SAP and IE 7. APPLE PATCH FOR WIRELESS HIJACK FLAWS Apple has found security holes in the way laptops use wireless internet. These holes can allow an attacker to remotely control an Apple Mac laptop. Additional coding problems were addressed in the updates that can cause system crashes, and privilege escalation for an account. Canon PC6, 7, 8, and 11 home copiers, and larger NP1010, 1020, and 6010 copiers sold in North America are effected by this event. Live Search refines search queries, so that distinctions can be made between words with different meanings, as Apple computer or apple fruit. Additional information is available at the following address: Source: Law.com MULTIMEDIA IN GOOGLE VIRTUAL EARTH Satellite views of Google's Virtual Earth that can use multimedia, are now available. Videos, and additional text is available for locations found on Virtual Earth. By utilizing multimedia content, institutions, businesses, tourist attractions, and other sources can advertise or inform users. City tours are examples of currently added content. 3 REMINDER: DEPARTMENT RELATED IT EQUIPMENT Video Camera - Check with Kevin to reserve a video camera for class, research, and extension activities. Tape seminars, experiments, class lectures, extension events, demonstrations or student speeches. Color Laser Printer - Print handouts in color. Although the printer has some streaking, it is near photographic quality. Color seminar, workshop, and class handouts can be printed at 20 pages per minute. Web Video Camera - A camera that enables sharing of audio and video between computers with an internet connection is now available for the department. Quick transfer of audio, video, and data can be accomplished with NetMeetings. Communicate with faculty, staff, and others at Princeton, other research facilities, and elsewhere. POWERPOINT TIPS Ask questions during presentations to let participants think about content, and capture attention. Pictures speak louder than words for visual learners. To hold the normal attention span (typically 10 minutes), pictures can be visually appealing. o Use pictures of related content. Slides can be used to cue activity. Keep in mind that around 2:00, attention spans can drop, because of being after lunch, and ready to slow down. A summary at the end of presentations can remind users of what was covered. Motion can be good in moderation. Brains tend to focus on moving objects. Some effects can be good in a presentation, but don't use effects that are too distractive. Fading into view can be better than sliding left and right to move content into place. The Fair Use Act allows for a 1 time use of copyrighted photos in education. If the photo is used more than 1 time, the copyright holder should be contacted for permission. A slide can be effectively used to present a problem, or give a case study. Press CTRL+P to enable a pen to write on the PowerPoint presentation. Press E to erase content drawn with the pen. Press Esc to make the pen disappear. Light backgrounds with dark print are easier to see than light text on a dark background. Using busy backgrounds can distract from the content of the slide. Content on the bottom of the screen may not be easily seen be people in the back of the class. Color blindness can effect the way people view slides. If department want their own PowerPoint template, the TASC center can be contacted to create them. The master slide in a presentation can be used to change content appearance for all slides.

4 To return to a certain numbered slide, press the corresponding slide number. Hyperlinks in slides can be used to speak further about a subject, if additional questions are asked.
