2 A little introduction The app uses GUI scripting which is not very fast since you have to run a command chain: myapp > System Events -> FCPX -> System Events -> myapp. Before running the app you have to enable GUI scripting (Universal Access). Enabling GUI scripting with Mavericks is a bit odd, its based on the "controller application's" security settings. So with any update you have set it up again. The app only works for timelines and FCPX has to be active before launching the app. You will be warned if FCPX is not running and XTL will quit. As said above the command chain is pretty slow, but in this special case you are still faster using this slow app compared to do things in FCPX since the app collects several FCPX commands into one command for the user. XTL is thought for review and approval of simple timelines. It can be used with complex ones, but not all options would apply with those. You can click "Markers from Timeline" or "Clips from Timeline". In both cases you will be asked what 'Kind of...' Once you pressed "Okay" your choice of selection is stored internally and also send to the clipboard. Its easy to paste it into an or some document for internal usage. Saving the result to SRT or STL allows to create title overlays with my X-Title Importer. This can be very handy for communication when moving rushes around. One more thing which works pretty cool is to import "TC stamped notes" from other co-workers. These note text files must be formatted: TC, tab, Note. This is the same format Apple's Compressor and DVD Studio Pro uses. There is no real manual except this draft one. Feel free to play around with some test projects. XTL 2

3 How it works (or not) Launching the application Before starting the application FCPX has to be active and a project has to be open. XTL is a floating app it will stay above all windows. But that doesn't mean it is active all the time. Once the application is launched you have some options. The Project FPX Settings are needed to create correct times in case you want to export a SRT or STL file. The Markers from Timeline button will ask you for the kind of tags you want to retrieve. These are (following the order of buttons in the interface of FCP X): All Standard Keywords Analysis Keywords Incomplete To-Do Completed To-Do Chapter Markers The Clips from Timeline button will ask you for the kind of clips you want to retrieve. These are (following the the order of buttons in the interface of FCP X): All Video Audio Titles Both of the above options will ignore duplicates means if a same timecode appears a second time it will be ignored. A later version will merge these duplicates into one note. The Save as buttons will save the list to the file format chosen in the matching pop up. Since the real out of a marker or clip canʼt be retrieved from the interface the SRT or STL will always set the TC out to the TC in of the next item. For the last item (as there is no next) the TC out is the same as the TC in. Itʼs a one frame only entry. XTL 3

4 Menu Options Import To review some notes from others you can import a tab text delimited file. It must be in formated as "TC tab Note" for example: 00:00:20:05" Oh my goodness. 00:00:27:09" And Mrs. Leifeld has to stay After the import the Marker window will open. Saving Shortcuts To make the process even easier there are some short cuts included. These will do a kind of automatic selection and save a file based on the preferences you selected. So you can go with a simple short cut to save the file type you want. See example below. XTL 4

5 Timecode Shortcuts To make Paste TC working make sure in FCPX you have added "Shift P" to your command set. Reason is that FCP X in several cases doesn't allow external control using the control character. Paste TC can be quite handy if you got some comments in or so and you want to jump to the TC. So just copy it from the and press cmd-v in XTL. Windows Just for a viewing pleasure you can show markers and clips in a table view. The Marker window will behave like a "virtual Timeline Index".
