Select the type of rule: - Directory Path Rule - File Path Rule - File Extension Rule - Filename Rule - File Attribute Rule Note: File Attribute Options include: File Size, Last Modified, or Drive Type File Size and Last Modified are File Attributes rules. File Attribute rules match metadata about a particular file. They are specific to files, and do not match directories. Drive Type identifies the type of a volume. For example, Removable, Fixed, or Remote. These rules apply to any volume, directory, or file. - Composite Rule Note: Composite Rules organize their constituent components into rules that are executed within a logical AND statement. Therefore, all constituent rules must match a particular path in order for the Composite Rule as a whole to match the path. As an example, suppose you have a Composite Rule with two children: Extension Rule:.jpg File Size 100Kb In this case, JPEGs larger than 100Kb would match the Composite Rule, but JPEGs smaller than 100KB would not match the rule. Backup Options From this menu option you can access the Backup Options shown below. General: The General tab displays the label for the remote archive folder and allows you to change it. By default, it will display My Remote Backup. Network: The Network tab allows you to control the network bandwidth usage for each priority of the backup scan. The first 3 settings are different variations of our service as a background process so it will not have an impact on the machine if a user sits down and starts working. The very high setting brings our service to a foreground process and will use all available bandwidth to complete the backups and anyone using the machine may notice a performance impact. File Type Backup: By default, 20 critical file extensions are marked for a backup priority. During each Audit, StorageCraft File Based Backup will identify files with the file types listed here and mark them for a backup priority if not already marked. During installation this list can be modified and added to. This can take place after installation from the software folder found via the Start>All Programs menu and is also accessible from the File Type Backup Tab from Backup Options. Default extensions:.doc,.docx,.xls,.xlsx,.ppt,.pptx,.pst,.dbx,.wab,.eml,.mdb,.accdb,.qbw,.qdf,.ptw,.ptb,.qel,.qph,.nsf. Local Storage: The Local Storage tab displays where your local storage copies of your backup archive are stored. By default, it is in GRBData\local on the C:\, however you may set any storage device with appropriate space as the local storage. Note: if you have local storage set and remove it, the backups will not work until it is replaced or a new storage set. Scans: The Scans tab is where you administer the different scan schedules. Highlighting a scan by clicking on it brings the buttons below into view. Run, starts the scan right then regardless of its scheduled time, remove deletes the scan from the menu, and edit allows you to enable or disable the scan and change its scheduled start time. All scans can also be accessed and administered through the windows task scheduler under the StorageCraft File Based Backup task library. User Information: The User Information tab displays the license key for your software and is useful to StorageCraft File Based staff when troubleshooting your account. Service Options From this menu option you can access the Services Options shown below. Maximum Uploads in Progress: Maximum Uploads in Progress allows for specifying how many files will be queued for backup at any given time. Only one file will back up at a time if the network settings are not fully optimized. A higher setting is helpful for uploads of a significant amount of small files that are not very large in size. Inputting a higher setting should be paired with a system optimized with memory and a high performance processor. A lower setting is sufficient for the average data set and computing system. Enable Debug Log: Enabling the Debug Log is an advanced debugging tool used rarely at the request of a StorageCraft technician. Enable Icon Overlays: Enabling Icon Overlays turns on the Icon Overlays which are seen on any file that is marked for backup. Disabling Icon Overlays might be desired for a less invasive user experience. Ask how to handle files not marked for backup: If enabled, you ll be provided the opportunity to specify a backup priority for any item not already marked for backup when the manual backup feature is used. Additionally, a priority can be automatically assigned to any manual backup item. When viewing revisions, change the view type to "Details" to be able to see when each revision was uploaded StorageCraft Technology Corporation StorageCraft Support Center Page 32 of 36
StorageCraft File Backup and Recovery with Backup 6. Right click on the file you want to restore or retrieve. - Retrieve puts the file back where it was originally. - Restore allows you to save/restore to a location you select. 8 Advanced Properties Advanced Properties consist of a window with 2 tabs: StorageCraft File Based Backup External Process Settings To display the Advanced Properties: 1. Right Click a file protected by StorageCraft File Backup and Recovery. This displays the right click menu screen. 2. Click StorageCraft File Based Backup. This displays the options for StorageCraft File Backup and Recovery with Backup. 3. Click Advanced Properties. This displays the Advanced Properties window. StorageCraft File Based Backup 2017 StorageCraft Technology Corporation StorageCraft Support Center Page 33 of 36
StorageCraft File Backup and Recovery with Backup Backup This option allows you to control what gets backed up and what doesn't. It also alows you to choose whether inheritance applies or not during automatic backup. Check the Inherit box if you want inheritance to apply. Uncheck the box if inheritance shouldn't apply. Backup options are: Yes - (back the item up) Yes - Honor Exclusions (back the item up but honor exclusion overrides) No - (don't back this item up). Click the radio button next to the option to make the item part of future automatic backups. Backup Algorithm The Backup Algorithm allows the user to select the type of backup for the currently selected file or folder. Backup Algorithm options are: Differential with Local Copy - The service will backup changes to a file after the initial full backup but WILL store a local copy of the file in the GRBData\local directory of the installation drive. Differential without Local Copy (Default) - The service will back up only changes to data after the initial full upload and it will not store a local copy of the data. Full - The service ignores the differential aspect of the software and does a full backup of the data set each time the scan runs. Please note this option will cause the backups to be less efficient and will take up significantly more space in your offsite archive. Maximum Number of Revisions This setting allows the user to stipulate how many copies that they can go back and restore from the most recent copy of the data set. By default, the 5 most recent revisions of a file are kept. The user can set this number to whatever they wish. Please note that storing more than 5 revisions on especially large data sets will use significantly more space in the offsite archive. Last Backup Displays the date and time when the currently selected file was last backed up StorageCraft Technology Corporation StorageCraft Support Center Page 34 of 36
External Process Settings StorageCraft File Backup and Recovery with Backup Occasionally a file has an exclusive lock that prevents StorageCraft File Based Backup from accessing it for backup. Properly configuring External Process Settings allows command line parameters to override the lock so that StorageCraft File Based Backup can back up the file. Pre-Backup Task A pre-backup task will operate prior to accessing the file for backup. A common task is to close a program that might be accessing the selected file. Common programs that require this option to ensure proper backups are made include Outlook and QuickBooks. Post-Backup Task A post-backup task will operate after the completion of the file backup. A common task is to open a program that was previously closed with the pre-backup task. Examples of Pre-Backup and Post-BackupTasks The examples below should only be utilized if you're an advanced user or IT professional. "taskkill /IM <process name>" - Stops any process gracefully. Same as clicking the close button on a process, so if there is unsaved data, the process may bring up a confirmation dialog to quit. "taskkill /IM /F <process name>" - Hard kills a process. Not usually recommended because of abrupt termination of process (No chance to save data, etc.) "sc stop <service name>" - Stop a service. "sc start <service name>" - Start a service. "<path to executable file>" - Start any executable: e.g. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe" will start Outlook (if that's where it's located) 9 Additional Features Miscellaneous Functionality This page contains help items pertaining to various tasks such as Uninstallation and Reinstallation StorageCraft Technology Corporation StorageCraft Support Center Page 35 of 36
Microsoft Task Scheduler - Scheduled Tasks StorageCraft File Backup and Recovery with Backup Important: The preferred method for configuring backups is with Manage Scans. However, you can use Microsoft Task Scheduler/Scheduled Tasks for advanced modifications to backup scans. For example: You can configure a scan to start when the system is idle or when your system starts up (which is not one of the Manage Scans options). StorageCraft strongly suggests that you initiate new scans with Manage Scans instead of using Microsoft Task Scheduler/Scheduled Tasks. Microsoft Event Viewer You can view any and all events in the StorageCraft File Based Backup service with the Microsoft Event Viewer. It records uploads, restores, errors, restart messages and audit start/completion information. To view events: 1. In Microsoft Windows open the Start menu. 2. Start Control Panel. 3. Select System Maintenance. 4. Select Administrative Tools. 5. Select Event Viewer. 6. Select Application and Service logs to find the StorageCraft entries. 7. Click StorageCraft File Based Backup. Registry Credential Access Every backup service license key is associated with the authentication credentials used during installation. The credentials are stored in the registry. If you need to install the software on a different machine after hardware failure you need these credentials. To access the credentials, open the registry, (start, run, regedit ), expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key, expand Software, expand StorageCraft, Expand StorageCraft File Based Backup, expand ArchiveIds, you will then see an alpha numeric Id, if you click on this you will see values for Password and UserName appear in the main window of the registry. Copy and paste these values into a text file for use in another installation for that license on a new machine.
