Introduction: SASS 3100 Shipping Package (U.S.) -

SASS 3100 Recommended Options -

SASS 3100 Filter Media - The SASS 3100 uses a disposable filter cartridge that simply snaps onto the instrument. Each fiber in the disc has an electric field frozen into it. These fields induce a charge in aerosols passing through and provide a capture mechanism that is 50 times more efficient than conventional glass or cellulose filters

SASS 3100 Filter Media (cont.) - Welded filter Removable filter Filter media come in either a welded design where the media is secured to the holding ring or in a removable format where the media can be easily removed from the ring. There are also two styles: a standard filter for the collection of pathogenic particulates or a radioactive filter for the collection of radioactive particulates.

- Setting Up the SASS 3100 System

System Switch and Connections - Operations Switch: ON RS-232 OFF Power Indicator LED External power connection Fan Indicator LED RS-232 connection

Mounted on Tripod - The instrument is equipped with two ¼-20 camera style mounting bosses. One is located at the center point of the carrying handle, while there is a second one on the base near the battery door hinges. These bosses allow the unit to be mounted on a tripod or other support device equipped with a ¼-20 bolt.

Drop-Down Menus -

Tool Bar Shortcuts - Fan ON/OFF Expert Mode Change LED Levels Multiple Air Sampler Selector RS-232 Settings Display Help About RS-232 Communications Tool Change Battery Settings Adjust Flow Rate form

Software: - The form is accessed by choosing from the Options drop-down menu. is used to program the SASS 3100 so that it will run a predetermined set of steps when the Operations Switch is set to the ON position. Automatic mode allows you to create custom recipes which can be saved to a file on the PC, loaded into the SASS 3100, and then run when operating in. You can modify any of the parameters in the form by typing new values in the text boxes. Each of these will be discussed more in the slides that follow

: Enabled/Disabled - To enable or disable Automatic Mode click on the Enabled or Disabled radio buttons in the upper right of the form. The air sampler will remember if it is in automatic mode even if the power is cycled OFF and ON. Enabled causes the air sampler to always run whatever recipe is currently in its memory even if not connected to a PC. Disabled allows the air sampler to be controlled by simply turning the power switch ON or OFF. Once you click on the Run button you can even disconnect the RS232 cable and the recipe will continue to run.

: Delay Before Starting First Cycle - Entering a value into the Initial delay time textbox will cause the air sampler to pause for the specified number of seconds before doing anything else when the recipe is first started. This can be useful if you have stirred up dust in the field and want to allow it to settle after you leave the area and before the sampling process starts.

: Parameters For Each Cycle - Setting the Fan run time will determine how long the fan runs after the Initial delay time and then turn the fan off for the specified Pause time. This fan/pause cycle will be repeated the number of times that is entered in the Number of cycles text box. If a finite pause time is specified it will be ignored after the last fan run time and the recipe will end.

: Desired Flow Rate - The desired Flow Rate can be set by either typing the desired Flow Rate value in liters per minute in the Flow Rate text box or by using the Adjust Flow Rate slider bar.

: Cautions - If you select a flow rate that is faster than the air sampler is capable of achieving the device will try to adjust for 40 seconds then give up and display a message box that informs the user that it was not possible to achieve the desired flow rate. The flow rate will then be reset to the maximum possible flow rate. If you disconnect the RS232 cable or shut the air sampler power off before the windows program has finished adjusting the flow rate, the flow rate will remain at whatever value it had when the adjusting process was interrupted. The desired flow rate will not be achieved. Once has been Enabled it is persistent in the SASS 3100 memory. In other words, if the power on the SASS 3100 is cycled on and off it will come back up still in. The only way to place it back into normal mode is to connect to the Windows program and select the Disable radio button.

: Totals - The Total air sampled text box allows the user to enter the cumulative air to be sampled in units of cubic meters. The Fan run time number displayed in the Total air sampled text box automatically updates based on the specified Flow Rate, Fan run time, and Number of cycles.

: Count Down Timer - The Count Down Timer shows the total run time for the recipe. This is based on the numbers that the user has entered in the textboxes above. When the user clicks on the Run button the values in the text boxes will be downloaded into the air sampler and the recipe will start to run. As it does so, the Count Down Timer will update every second, showing the time remaining until the recipe is complete.

: Saving and Loading a Recipe - Click on the Save To PC button on the bottom of the form. This will open a Save As dialog window.

: Saving and Loading a Recipe - Select or browse to a directory where you want to save the recipe file and create a file name. The file extension.rma (recipe mode auto) will automatically be given to the file. Recipe files are user editable text files, however, it is recommended that you use the form to create and modify recipes rather than a text editor so that subtle errors are not introduced to the file.

: Saving and Loading a Recipe - Clicking on the Load From PC button will open the form shown here. This form allows the user to load their previously saved recipes back into the SASS Browse to the directory where you re recipes are stored and open the.rma file you want to use. It will appear in the form. Start the recipe by clicking on the Run button. Allow the unit to adjust to its new values.

How to Get Out of and Back to Manual Mode - If the right LED is BLINKING GREEN (as in video above) the unit is in and is running the last recipe that was set up in the form. This recipe is persistent in the SASS 3100 memory and will always load when you turn the device on unless it is intentionally Disabled. Follow instructions on the following slides to Disable and return to Manual Mode.

How to Get Out of and Back to Manual Mode - 1. You must have the SASS 3100 Software Control installed on your computer. 2. Connect to external power or have a battery installed in the unit. 3. Connect to the SASS 3100 to your PC via the supplied RS-232 communications cable or BioLink Bluetooth (if purchased). 4. Place Operations Switch into the center RS- 232 position.

How to Get Out of and Back to Manual Mode - 5. Open the Control by doubleclicking on the SASS 3100 icon. 6. Select Options, then. 7. In the upper right corner of the Automatic Mode form click the Disable radio button and close the program. 8. You can now turn the Operations Switch to ON and run the device in Manual Mode.

Demo Mode - The Windows software program can be placed in Demo Mode by going to the Options pull down menu and selecting Demo Mode. This can be especially useful for training purposes. To use Demo Mode be sure the SASS 3100 is turned off. Disconnect the RS-232 cable or BioLink Bluetooth device. Turn the SASS 3100 on and be sure the Status Bar indicates there is No Connection. Select Options then select Demo Mode. When the unit is in Demo Mode make sure that the SASS 3100 IS NOT connected to the PC and that the status bar on the bottom of the interface window DOES NOT indicate that you are trying to communicate with an actual air sampler.

Demo Mode - In Demo Mode the voltage and temperature will flicker back and forth by a small amount.

Demo Mode - If you select the Flow Rate from the Tool Bar in Demo Mode the text boxes will turn red and the simulation will indicate the flow rate is being adjusted just as would occur with an actual unit. Demo Mode allows you to experiment with the different menus in the control program.

Expert Mode - The Windows software control program can be placed in Expert Mode by going to the Options pull down menu and selecting Expert Mode. Expert Mode enables you to set and/or control various parameters of the air sampler independent of the Automatic Mode form such as: Flow Rate LED Settings Save RS-232 Log Data Select Multiple Samplers Reprogram the microcontroller with a new version of firmware received from Research International.

Expert Mode - Selecting Expert Mode from the Options menu opens the Expert Mode Password form. Enter the word Groucho and click on the Enable button (password is case sensitive).

Expert Mode: Adjust Flow Rate - If you want to adjust the Flow Rate without using the Automatic Mode form select Options then Flow Rate from the drop-down menu or the Adjust flow rate button on the Tool Bar.

Expert Mode: Adjust Flow Rate - Here you can adjust the flow rate by entering a value into the Flow Rate Adjustment text box or by using the Adjust Flow Rate slider.

Expert Mode: Adjust Flow Rate - Changing the flow rate will cause the background color of the Flow Rate text box and the LPM text box to both turn red. A red warning message in the status bar in the bottom of the main window will also display the message, Adjusting flow. This indicates that a desired flow rate has been entered but it has not yet been achieved.

Expert Mode: Adjust Flow Rate - When the fan is turned to the ON position the Windows program will adjust the fan speed and monitor the RPM of the fan. The RPM will be used to calculate the flow rate. The speed will be adjusted until the desired flow rate has been reached. Allow a few seconds for the device to adjust to the new flow rate.

Expert Mode: Adjust Flow Rate - If both the form and the Flow Rate Adjustment form are open, changing the flow rate in one form automatically causes it to change in the other.

Expert Mode: LED Settings - Allows you to set the intensities of the LEDS. These settings will be saved in flash memory and will be present on subsequent boot ups.

Expert Mode: LED Settings - Be careful! Setting the LED intensities to zero will result in no light at all and will make it impossible for you to see that the LEDs are flashing to indicate a low voltage or fan that is not spinning when it should be.

Expert Mode: Log RS232 Data - It is possible to save the RS232 traffic that goes back and forth between the Windows program and air sampler in a text file. You do this is by choosing the Log RS232 Data option from the Tools drop down menu.

Expert Mode: Log RS232 Data - Browse to a directory where you want to save the RS232 data. Then enter a name in the File name textbox at the bottom of the form. The file extension TXT will automatically be given to the file name if you do not specify a file extension. RS232 data files are user-editable text files.

Expert Mode: Typical RS232 Log File - All data sent from the Windows control program to the air sampler is shown on the far left. Data received from the air sampler is indented with a tab. Each transmission is shown on a separate line. Logging the RS232 traffic can be useful if you are trouble shooting or want to monitor system parameters over an extended period of time. To stop logging RS232 data choose the Log RS232 Data option from the Tools pull down menu and the data file will be closed.

Expert Mode: Multiple Sampler - Allows you to communicate with up to 7 air samplers from the Windows control program. All air samplers must already be connected to your computer by RS232, USB or wireless link, to be added. You must be logged into Expert Mode to access this feature.

Expert Mode: Multiple Sampler - Select an air sampler by clicking on the radio button on the left side of the row. Each air sampler can be named by typing a new name into the textbox.

Expert Mode: Multiple Sampler - Red background indicates that the air sampler is not connected to the computer or the Windows program has not yet established communications with it. Green background, indicates that the air sampler on this row is currently connected and communicating with the Windows program.

Expert Mode: Multiple Sampler - If communication has not yet been established, the COM port and PC baud rate drop down menus will become enabled, allowing the you to select the desired COM port and baud rate for the air sampler. Once these are selected you can attempt to connect by clicking on the Connect button. If the program can establish communications the background color will change to green and the COM port and PC baud rate drop down menus become disabled.

Expert Mode: Multiple Sampler - If communications cannot be established a message box will open up informing you. If this occurs try another port or baud rate and check that all connections have been properly made. Once communication is established the serial number for that air sampler will automatically be uploaded to the PC and displayed in the S/N textbox.

Expert Mode: Multiple Sampler - When the Windows program is closed all of the information in the Multi Sampler form is saved in memory. When the Windows program is opened back up you will not have to re-enter any of this information, as long as the same air samplers are still connected to the same ports on the PC. It can take a second or two to establish communication with a new air sampler. Once communication has been established the operating parameters for that air sampler will be uploaded to the PC, which also takes a couple of seconds. Be patient when switching between air samplers.

Expert Mode: Reprogram - If you receive a new firmware version from Research International or if the firmware in the SASS 3100 becomes corrupted, it may become necessary to reinstall the firmware. To do this, place the control program in Expert Mode. You should now see an option listed under the Tools pull down menu entitled Reprogram, select this option.

Expert Mode: Reprogram - Firmware should be located on your computer in the Files/Research International/SASS 3100 directory. If you have received a new version of the firmware copy it to this directory. Firmware will always have the file extension.s19.

Expert Mode: Reprogram - Double click on the filename, or click on the filename once and then click on the Open button. A progress bar window will open showing the progress as the firmware in the SASS 3100 is reprogrammed. This process takes about 10 to 30 seconds, depending on the baud rate setting. When the reprogramming process is complete the status bar window will automatically close and the microcontroller will reboot and proceed to run with the new firmware. Extreme care should be exercised to not bump the cable or shut off the instrument while reprogramming the firmware. If the process is interrupted in the middle it will not be possible to recover without shipping the unit back to the factory.

Expert Mode: RS232 Settings - The RS232 Setting window is opened by going to the Tools pull down menu and selecting RS232 Settings.

Expert Mode: RS232 Settings - IMPORTANT! Selecting Auto detect port will result in the program automatically checking each port available on the computer at both of the available baud rates. In this mode, the controls in the PC Settings group are grayed out, but they will still display the port and baud rate that is being tried as all of the different combinations are scanned. If the air sampler is detected at one of these settings it will automatically connect and the text boxes on the main form will start displaying information about the temperature, voltage, etc.

Expert Mode: RS232 Settings - Auto detect port is the recommended mode for setting up the RS232 communications with the air sampler because it does not require any input from the user. However, you may also manually select a port and baud rate by choosing the Manually select port option. If you click on this option the controls in the PC Settings group will no longer be grayed out.

Expert Mode: RS232 Settings - If the program is connected to the air sampler when this option is selected the connection will be temporarily closed at the time of option selection. You can then select a baud rate by clicking on either 9,600 baud or 57,600 baud in the PC Settings group and then select a COM port from the drop down list. Then click on the red Connect button to attempt to open the port and communicate using these settings.

Expert Mode: RS232 Settings - If successful the button will turn green and the label will change to Disconnect. Once this happens the controls in the PC Settings group will again be grayed out, since it is not possible to change port and baud rate settings on an open port.

Expert Mode: RS232 Settings - The Air Sampler Settings group allows you to change the air sampler baud. To do this you must first be able to communicate with the air sampler. Therefore, these controls will be grayed out until communication is established. If you change the air sampler baud rate, the PC baud rate will automatically change too and the program will then attempt to re-establish communication at the new baud rate. This will be true in both Manual and Automatic detection modes. This may take a second or two. The air sampler baud rate will be saved in nonvolatile memory and will be used on subsequent power up.

Expert Mode: RS232 Settings - The RS232 Settings window cannot be opened at the same time as the Multiple Sampler window, since the Multiple Sampler window must always operate in a manual COM port detection mode. If the Multiple Sampler window is already open when the RS232 Settings window is opened it will be automatically be closed and vice versa. For the same reason, opening and closing the Multiple Sampler window will leave the Windows program in a manual COM port detection mode.

Expert Mode: RS232 Tool - You may wish to develop your own software for use with the SASS 3100, or would like to connect the SASS 3100 to another system that is equipped with an RS232 port. To assist with that we have included an RS232 Tool in the Windows software program. This tool can be accessed by choosing the RS232 Tool option from the Tools pull down menu.

Expert Mode: RS232 Tool - This form allows you to monitor all of the RS232 traffic that is being sent back and forth between the Windows program and the SASS 3100.

Expert Mode: RS232 Tool - The multi-line Message Sent text box on the left displays messages being sent from the Window software to the SASS The multi-line Message Received text box on the right displays the responses being sent back from the SASS 3100 to the Windows program.

Expert Mode: RS232 Tool - When the SASS 3100 is connected to a PC and the Windows program is running, it constantly pings the air sampler for its status. This can be seen by unchecking the boxes in the Block display of following commands group at the top of the RS232 window. Because there are so many of these commands and they are sent so often the default is to block the commands from being displayed, otherwise it becomes difficult to see the response to other commands.

Expert Mode: RS232 Tool - Right clicking on the mouse when hovering over the Message Sent and Message Received text boxes brings up a menu that allows you to select all the text in that window and then copy it to the clipboard. Or you can copy this text using the mouse to highlight the text you want to copy and then using the Cntl+C keys to copy it to the clipboard. The text in either of these windows can be cleared at any time by double-clicking on the text box with the left mouse button.

Expert Mode: RS232 Tool - The text box in the Command to Send group at the top of this form allows you to type in a command to send to the air sampler. This is accomplished by typing the command and then pressing the Enter key, or by typing in the command and then clicking on the Send button. See next slide for example.

Expert Mode: RS232 Tool - For example, the #R command tells the air sampler to retrieve the yellow Fan Off LED light intensity setting in decimal form. In the Message Received window the text string #R512 is shown, indicating that the air sampler has reported back that its present setting for the yellow Fan Off LED light intensity is 512 counts, which is the maximum intensity for this LED. Table 3-1 in the SASS 3100 Operation and Maintenance Manual lists the complete command set for the SASS 3100 for users who are interested in communicating directly with the unit via RS232.

- The SASS 3100 help about form can be accessed by choosing About from the HELP pull down menu. This window displays the version number of the Windows software program as well as the version number for the firmware inside the SASS 3100 microcontroller.

- Maintenance and

General Cleaning - The exterior of the SASS 3100 may be cleaned with warm soapy water. If the unit requires decontamination, it may be washed with sodium hypochlorite (1 to 5%) solution (standard household bleach). The unit should be thoroughly rinsed with water and then dried following treatment with bleach.

Fan Shell Removal - The fan shell is detachable from the instrument body for more thorough cleaning. The fan shell is held onto the main part of the instrument with three screws as shown in the figure below. Remove these finger-tight screws and lift the fan shell off the instrument.

Fan Shell Cleaning - Wash and rinse the fan shell with warm soapy water of 1-5% bleach. Thoroughly dry the fan shell before reinstalling on the unit. See cautions on the following page.

Cleaning Precautions - Gap The rotor and thr mounting plate may be swabbed with liquid decontamination agents in exposed areas, or dipped into a disinfectant, but with caution. Cleaning fluids should not be allowed to stagnate in the gap between the centrifugal rotor and the mounting plate. If a dipping method of cleaning is used, lower the fan rotor into the solution vertically and do not immerse further than the top surface of the SASS 3100 body. Centrifugal Fan Rotor Mounting Plate

Cleaning Precautions - After cleaning has been completed, shake the unit to remove most of the residual disinfectant from the bushing area. Turn the unit on, with the fan shell off to complete the drying process. Dry the fan shell as needed and replace it and the mounting screws.

Replacing Motor/Rotor Assembly - Remove the fan shell by first removing the three finger-tight mounting screws as seen in the Fan Shell Cleaning slide. Next, remove the four screws that hold the fan rotor to the assembly frame and carefully lift up on the fan rotor to loosen the assembly from the frame, taking care not to stress the motor s ribbon cable connector.

Replacing Motor/Rotor Assembly - Use a small screwdriver to gently pry loose both sides of the cable snap connector open and then pull the cable out of the connector. Place the old fan motor assembly to the side.

Replacing Motor/Rotor Assembly - Align the new fan motor housing and the cable in the same way as with the old unit. Insert the new ribbon cable into the cable snap connector and press in until the cable is in place. Use a screwdriver to push the cable snap connectors closed. Gently pull on the fan motor to be sure the power cable is fully inserted. When placing the fan/rotor assembly, make sure that the red top seal gasket is fully seated in the ring to assure a watertight seal.
