1 SecondSlide Solution Quick Start This document gets you up and running with the SecondSlide Solution. We also refer you to the user guides that contain details on making the best use of the entire Aperio system. About the SecondSlide Solution The SecondSlide Solution has been preconfigured to make it simple and easy to share digital slides by first scanning your glass slides and then uploading the resulting digital slides to SecondSlide.com. You will organize the digital slides into cases, projects, and/or courses within SecondSlide Connect (a digital pathology information management system), and then use its Share on SecondSlide button to upload them to the SecondSlide sharing network. SecondSlide Solution Characteristics The SecondSlide Solution is specifically configured to make it easy for you to scan and share your slides with SecondSlide.com. It comes standard with: A ScanScope scanner and Console software that lets you scan your glass slides to create digital slides. You can keep up to 100 images at any one time. ImageScope software that lets you view your digital slides SecondSlide Connect, a streamlined version of Spectrum Plus software, that lets you organize your slides into cases, projects or courses, and then share them on SecondSlide.com Three preconfigured users one for managing cases, one for managing projects, and another for managing courses. Each user uses a different data hierarchy. (See 2 Log into SecondSlide Connect to See Your Digital Slides on page 2 for details on how SecondSlide Connect data is organized into data hierarchies and for the login names and passwords for these users.) Additionally, each of these users has the ability to scan and view slides. Clinical User. SecondSlide Connect organizes your data as cases, specimens, and digital slides. Research User. SecondSlide Connect organizes your data as projects, specimens, and digital slides. Education User. SecondSlide Connect organizes your data as courses, lessons, specimens, and digital slides. SecondSlide Overview SecondSlide is an innovative sharing network that gives you an easy way to share digital slides and all the data that go with them (for example, case details and attached documents) with others. You can share a case, a project, or a course. And you can share with one person or with a group of people. Once the case, project, or course is shared on SecondSlide, recipients have the opportunity to log into SecondSlide Solution Quick Start 1

2 SecondSlide to view it and make changes or recommendations. And you can review those changes by logging into the SecondSlide site and going to the case, project, or course. Getting Started This section shows you how to get started with the SecondSlide Solution. 1 Scan Your Glass Slides to Create Digital Slides The first step to making use of the SecondSlide Solution is to scan glass slides to create digital slides that you can share on SecondSlide. 1. Double click the Console short cut on your desktop and log in as one of the following users: Login name: RUser, Password: pruser. Login name: CUser, Password: pcuser. Login name: EUser, Password: peuser. Note that passwords are case sensitive, so type them exactly as shown above. 2. Scan one or more slides. The digital slides that are created are automatically available in SecondSlide Connect. Refer to the table below for more information on how to scan slides. What Do I Do? ScanScope CS/GL User s Guide ScanScope Console User s Guide You will want to review all the information in this guide, but for specific information on starting the ScanScope, placing slides in the slide tray, and scanning, see: Chapter 3, ScanScope Startup and Shutdown Chapter 4, Scanning Slides Appendix E, Troubleshooting You may want to read all of the chapters in this guide for information on all scanning options, but for basic scanning information, see: Chapter 1, Introduction to Scanning Slides Chapter 2, Installing and Starting the Console (The Console has already been installed for you) Chapter 3, Manually Scanning Slides Chapter 4, Automatically Scanning Slides We recommend that you delete older images after sharing them on SecondSlide as you will not be able to create new digital slides if you have reached the maximum of 100 images. 2 Log into SecondSlide Connect to See Your Digital Slides SecondSlide Connect is a digital pathology information management system that treats high resolution digital slides as an integrated element in pathology and educational workflows. SecondSlide Connect displays information in context, with gross (macro) images, digital slide images, case histories, and other associated documents and images cross linked and concurrently viewable. 2 SecondSlide Solution Quick Start

3 Your digital slides and the information that goes with them (such as attached documents, patient information, and so on) can be organized into clinical, research, or educational data hierarchies as shown below: Each SecondSlide Connect user has the ability to use one of the data hierarchies shown above. You can log in as each of the three predefined users as required to change between hierarchies. To log into SecondSlide Connect: 1. Double click the SecondSlide Connect Login short cut on your desktop. 2. On the login page, enter the user name and password of the user (three predefined users are available to you) that matches the data hierarchy you want to use: Depending on the user name you entered, you see the SecondSlide Connect main page organized as a clinical, research, or educational data hierarchy. 4 3 View Your Digital Slides Before you create the cases, projects, or courses you will share on SecondSlide, you may want to review your digital slides: 1. On the main SecondSlide Connect page, go to the Digital Slides menu at the top of the page and select All Digital Slides (As List). The digital slide list might look something like this: 2. To view the digital slide, click its Thumbnail image and it opens in ImageScope. 4 SecondSlide Solution Quick Start

5 ImageScope Main Window ImageScope contains many advanced features that you may want to explore later. For now, you may just want to move through the image and change its magnification to view the digital slide. Moving the Viewing Area The easiest method for moving the viewing area is to pan the image: click and hold the left mouse button. Panning down while you drag the cursor across the digital slide. Your cursor turns into a closed fist, moves the slide in the direction you are dragging; if you want to set ImageScope to pan in reverse or change panning speed, see the ImageScope Options chapter in the ImageScope User s Guide. ImageScope provides other methods of moving the viewing area. One of the most frequently used methods is to click in the thumbnail to move the main image to that part of the slide, or drag the rectangle in the thumbnail window to move to another area of the digital slide. Changing Viewing Magnification Double clicking on the image in the main window immediately zooms that image to the maximum magnification. Double click again to return to the most recently used magnification that was not the maximum magnification. Another way to change the image magnification is to use the Zoom Slider: Zoom Slider: Click Fit to set the magnification to 0x and fit the entire digital slide within the main viewing area. Click any other magnification setting to zoom in using that magnification. Click the slider and drag it up or down to change the magnification in small increments. If your mouse has a scroll wheel, click the image in the main window and roll the scroll wheel to move the slider. SecondSlide Solution Quick Start 5

6 Learning to Use ImageScope What Can I Do? Open more than one digital slide in ImageScope at the same time. Use all the ImageScope viewing options. Where Do I Find Instructions? ImageScope User s Guide Chapter 12, Saving Digital Slides and Regions 4 Associate Your Digital Slides with Cases, Projects, or Courses Once you have logged into SecondSlide Connect, you will want to create cases, projects, or courses to share on SecondSlide. One easy way to create a case with associated digital slides is: 1. Select one or more slides from the Digital Slide list (select the check boxes next to the slides you want) then click the Assign to link at the top of the list: This section shows how to associate digital slides with a new case. 7 2. Select New Case from the Select drop down list: 3. On the Assign to New Case page you can fill in the information about the new case and click Add: Once you click Add, the Case Details page opens and shows you all the information on the case. This page contains the Share on SecondSlide button, which shares the case on SecondSlide (see the next section). What Do I Do? Become familiar with navigating in SecondSlide Connect. 8 5 Share Your Cases, Projects, or Courses on SecondSlide Once you have created a case, project, or course, you are ready to upload it to SecondSlide and define who you want to share it with. 1. Log into SecondSlide Connect and on the main page use the appropriate List All command to see the list of your cases, projects, or courses. 2. Click the icon next to the case, project or course you want to share on SecondSlide to open it. 3. Make any changes you want and click Save. 4. While still on the Details page, click the Share on SecondSlide button. Note: If you created the case following the instructions on the previous page, you are already on the Details page and you can simply click the Share on SecondSlide button. What Do I Do Next? After clicking Share on SecondSlide, you are redirected to SecondSlide.com. If you already have a SecondSlide user name (different from your SecondSlide Connect user name), enter it on the SecondSlide login page. If you don t have a user name, click Sign Up to join SecondSlide. On SecondSlide, define the recipients you want to share with and share the case, project, or course. Where Do I Find Instructions?
