1 Overview The following document is a basic guide to C. E. Niehoff & Co.'s (CEN) J1939 software application for Windows (beta version at time of writing) that enables customer access to charging system data from our J1939 enabled smart devices. Acquiring the Software As of January 1 st, 2015 the J1939 software is available for download at the following website: The website provides the customer with the latest software version, tracks updates and new features, provides compatible CAN to USB device information and offers cabling suggestions. If planning to run the J1939 software on a Windows XP or Windows 7 computer, the website also provides the required.net framework 4.0 client download that might be required for installation. The latest version of this document may also be found here. Installation and Upgrading 1. Check the System Requirements section at the end of this document before selecting a desktop, laptop or tablet to install this software on. 2. Once selected, connect your Windows device to the internet and visit the download website listed above. 3. Click on the most recent release at the top of the screen and download (save) the setup zip file to your PC. 4. Extract the zip file in a temporary folder and run the unzipped.exe file to install the CEN J1939 Interface. The default settings are best in most cases. 5. Make sure that the CAN to USB adapter device drivers (Peak, NexIQ, DG Tech or Noregon) are installed correctly on your system. 6. Start the software with the CEN J1939 Interface desktop icon. If the software exits with a message stating that the.net framework is required, download and install the Microsoft.NET Framework 4 Client also found on the website listed above. It is recommended that the user check this website often for updates as new features/fixes are published frequently during this development stage. 2 Using the Software The main screen below is shown upon startup. Each area is numbered and described below. (1) Facility, vehicle and technician information entry. Use these fields to document your session. The Facility and Vehicle ID are required fields, while the other fields are optional. The Vehicle ID is used in naming the saved status and data files for easier future reference. (2) CAN to USB Adapter selection. 3 (3) After completing steps 1 and 2, make sure you are connected to the vehicle network or smart device, and that everything is powered on. Click the Identify button to read the connected CEN smart devices. When found, a single or leader device name will show in the left side CEN Regulator selection box. If a second device is identified, its name will show in the right hand field (4). This feature will be expanded on in the future with the addition of new CEN smart devices (i.e. battery equalizer). (5) Status Check momentarily connects to the vehicle network and identifies CEN smart devices on the network. This feature can be used for stand-alone or networked devices to determine device ID, software revision, hours of operation and basic status. The resulting information is saved to a text report along with the time, date and vehicle information. These reports can be found in the user s Documents folder under the CEN Data Logs folder. (6) Data Analysis - this feature is in development and not currently available. The software will review session data and device memory data logs to identify known failure signatures or data parameters that may indicate a pending failure (prognostic/predictive failure analysis). (7) Data Center the data center lists all session logs of previous connections made using this computer. All session logs are titled with the Vehicle ID _ Session Date and saved in the user s "Documents" folder under the CEN Data Logs folder. Data Center Screen Page 3 of 6

4 When a session log is selected in the Data Logs list on the left, the user has the option of: to CEN This will open the default program and address a new . The user must then manually attach the session log files found in Documents folder. Upload to CEN When the computer is connected to the internet, this option allows the user to upload selected file(s) to a C. E. Niehoff & Co. server. Please notify your CEN representative whenever you upload a data file so that they know to initiate processing. Graph Session Data This option allows the user to review a previous session data logs in chart format. Graph Regulator Data This will extract a regulator s internal memory data log that was downloaded during a session for review in chart format. (8) Dashboard this will initiate a connection to the vehicle or device and start a session. The appropriate virtual gauge dashboard will start based on the Identify results or manual entry of the regulator name(s). CEN is constantly expanding our device profiles, so please contact your CEN representative if your J1939 enabled smart device is not on the list or does not read data correctly. 5 Once a session is started, the data recording starts and the user has the option of: Graph Start real-time charting of session data. The charting function does require additional computing overhead and is intended for shorter term sessions (less than one hour) for better performance. The graphs can be reviewed any time during the session or after a session is complete by going to the Data Center. Screen Snapshot This will allow the user to capture a picture of the current dashboard, give it a title (optional) and automatically save as a.jpg file in the user s Documents. Request Data Log Extracts the connected CEN device s internal memory data log. When downloading a CEN regulator data log, the unit must be energized but not rotating. The data contents of the internal memory are stored within the current session s data file and can be reviewed from the Data Center. Add Comment allows the user to embed comments within the session data log. Useful for documenting changes and events during the session (i.e. turning on/off a load, disconnecting a harness, etc.) Using the Software as a Data File Viewer Saved data files from testing or remote field service sessions can be easily shared and viewed by installing the software and accessing the Data Center. Once the Data Center is open, copy the shared session file (*.cen file format) into your Documents/CEN Data Logs folder. Click the Refresh button in the Data Center to see the shared file. From here you are able to view the session and chart the internal device data if it was downloaded during the recorded session.
