1 Information and Communication Technology BCcampus Online Collaborative Program Computer Support Technician Certificate (CST) Computer Hardware ICT 102 Course Outline COURSE IMPLEMENTATION DATE: September 2014 OUTLINE EFFECTIVE DATE: September 2015 COURSE OUTLINE REVIEW DATE: June 2020 GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will begin to prepare students to support and repair personal computers by examining: basic lab safety concerns; the operation of the major parts of PCs; the operation of devices that are commonly attached to PCs; basic troubleshooting guidelines; and the use of utility software. For students interested in pursuing an A+ certification the material presented in the course will be helpful for the hardware component of the A+ certification exams. Information about this document: This Course Outline describes the curriculum of the CST Collaborative. Individual CST courses may be delivered by any one of the participating institutions within the collaborative. When this course is delivered by COTR, any differences, additions or specific configurations will be clearly identified. Program Information: This course is a required course for the CST program. A+ Guide to Hardware: Managing, Maintaining and Troubleshooting, 6th Edition. Course Technology. ISBN: Program hardware and software requirements are detailed in the ICT Program Outline. Besides the program resource requirements, students will also need the following computer maintenance tools: Ground bracelet, Flat head screwdriver, Philips screwdriver, Electronics tweezers, Needle-nose pliers, Wire cutter / stripper. These tools do not need to be purchased ahead of class and will be discussed in detail (with examples) on week 2. Please see the instructor s syllabus or check COTR s online text calculator for a complete list of the currently required textbooks. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon the successful completion of this course, students should be able to identify the major components of a PC and the common devices attached to them; explain the general principles of operation for each component and attached device; describe common troubleshooting techniques; and demonstrate safe tool and equipment use. EXAM POLICY: Students must attend all required scheduled exams that make up a final grade at the appointed time and place. Individual instructors may accommodate for illness or personal crisis. Additional accommodation will not be made unless a written request is sent to and approved by the appropriate Department Head prior to the scheduled exam. 5 COURSE GRADE: Course grades are assigned as follows: Grade A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D F Mark (Percent) < 50 A grade of "D" grants credit, but may not be sufficient as a prerequisite for sequential courses.
