5 1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The work performed as part of this report includes analyzing the as-built documentation and field reviewing the existing electrical system of the existing District 5 Headquarters located at 719 South Woodland Blvd., Deland, Florida to determine what electrical system modifications are required to accommodate additional proposed equipment power loads to be added to the existing electrical system and back-up generator power. In addition, this report will also determine the electrical elements to connect the new load, including wire and conduit sizes and length, panelboard and breaker sizes. 2. EXISTING ELECTRICAL CONDITIONS In order to document the existing condition of the building power system, a panel schedule of the main panelboard was developed. The main panelboard matrix shown in Section 3 includes sub panel names, circuits, wire sizes and loads. Due to the age of the building, no as-builts or panel schedules were available to verify the design load information. Therefore, intensive field reviews were performed to determine wire sizes, circuit breaker sizes, and to measure actual loads (using a Multimeter). The District 5 building is powered utilizing one main distribution panel, called Main Panelboard. The Main Panelboard is rated at 4000 Amps and its bus is rated 2000 Amps. The Main Panelboard is located in the Main Electrical Room on the first floor and it is 3 phase 277/480 Volts. The Main Panelboard line wires are 4 sets of 500 Kcmil wires. The main panel board is fed from both utility power and back-up power system via an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). The back-up generator is rated at 800 KW and the ATS has a 1200 Amp capacity. (See Appendix B for existing electrical room floor and electrical riser diagram). Prior to designing the installation of the new electrical system, the existing system was analyzed for available expansion as well as any potential deficiencies. This analysis included verification of wire sizes, circuit breaker sizes, panelboard ratings, and generator ratings. 3. EXISTING PANELBOARD ANALYSIS There are a total of four existing panelboards (LE, LIC, HE and Main) located inside the District 5 building Main Electrical Room. These existing panel boards were evaluated to make sure they adhered to NEC code requirements. There was one NEC violation found within these panels: Panel HE circuit 25: There are 2 wires connected to this circuit. Per the NEC Article only one wire shall be connected to a breaker lug. Recommendation: relocate one of the wires to circuit 24 (open breaker spare). Addition of UPS and Panel Boards Serving 1st and 2nd Floors Data Centers 1
6 The entire building is backed-up by the generator system and the Main panelboard has space available for a new circuit breaker. The Main panelboard will be used to add the additional loading of future equipment data room. See the Main panelboard schedule below. 7 The contents of the panelboard are described below: The top section of the panel schedule spreadsheet provides basic information for the panelboard such as mounting type, panel name, main lug size, bus size, voltage, number of phases, number of wires, size of the wires, and the location where the panelboard was installed. The body of the spreadsheet identifies the panelboard and its individual circuits. Please note that when field reviewing the panelboards, it was observed that some labels located at the panelboards were inaccurate. Therefore some circuits were named Unknown : Circuit number: The number of the circuit within the panelboard. Destination: Description of the load. Amp (per phase): This is equivalent to amperage. Note that these numbers were obtained by amp probe reading. They are not design loads. Frame Size: The frame size to hold the circuit breaker. Breaker Size: The circuit breaker is for overload protection. When designing a new circuit, the load was verified to be a maximum of up to 80% of the circuit breaker rating. For example, if the circuit breaker is a 20A single pole, the load should be a maximum of 16A. Number of Poles: This is the number of poles of the breaker. It can be 1, 2 or 3. Wire size AWG or Kcmil: Proper wire size is critical to the circuit. When calculating the wire size, the maximum amperage per wire size allowed by NEC can be found on Table (B) (16)) (See Appendix A). To finalize the panelboard analysis, the Total measured Load (AMPS) and Total measured Load (KVA) of the panelboard was calculated. The total KVA load is the sum of all three phases times the voltage per phase (277V) divided by 1,000. The total measured load is determined by utilizing the field measurements. The total AMPS are the total KVA divided by (for 277V/480V). Addition of UPS and Panel Boards Serving 1st and 2nd Floors Data Centers 3
8 4. PROPOSED MODIFICATIONS TO MAIN PANELBOARD After performing an analysis of the existing power system, an analysis of the future needs for the electrical system, the UPS system, and the generator system was conducted. In particular, the effect of implementing a new data room on the first floor and the associated servers, and the addition of equipment required for implementing the overall system was reviewed and analyzed. The new data room will include new equipment as well as some existing equipment to be relocated from the second floor data room. The exact anticipated loads for the new data room are not yet known as the equipment has not yet been determined. However, the installation of a 225 Amp panel, ITS UPS 1, with four 60 Amp circuit breakers will be capable of powering all proposed and existing equipment to be installed in the 1 st floor data center. The installation of a 225 Amp panel, ITS UPS 2, with two 60 Amp circuit breakers will power existing equipment previously powered by the UPS. The assumption for the calculations used in this report is that all the proposed power loads are to be backed-up by a new 100 KW UPS system. The existing 2 nd floor data center has a measured load of a maximum of 80 Amps/phase (including the existing UPS). Therefore, the load for the new data center will be assumed to be a maximum of 160 Amps/phase (design load). The load for the new data center was added to the Main panelboard schedule and it is shown on the following page. Addition of UPS and Panel Boards Serving 1st and 2nd Floors Data Centers 4

10 After entering all information into the panelboard schedule as described above and verifying the information in the field, the proposed connected load for the data center was added to the spreadsheet and analyzed to ensure the existing generator, ATS, and main panelboard would be able to accommodate the additional equipment. An additional 25% of capacity was added to the total existing load for contingency, since the loads used were measured loads and not design loads. The results are the following: EXISTING ITEM CAPACITY MEASURED LOAD Add. 25% PASS/FAIL 1 EXISTING MAIN PANEL WIRE SIZE (AMPS) PASS 2 ATS 80% PASS 3 EXISTING GENERATOR 80% PASS PROPOSED ITEM CAPACITY DESIGN LOAD Add. 25% PASS/FAIL 4 NEW CIRCUIT WIRE SIZE (AMPS) NA PASS 5 NEW CIRCUIT BREAKER 80% NA PASS To calculate the capacity from the table above, the following criteria were used: 1. 12 6. RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION Information for the panelboards, while graphically showing their respective relations to each other, the UPS, the generator and the utility power are shown in form of a riser diagram. The riser diagram also shows information of the new panel schedule and locations for the installation, including conduit sizes. Based on existing as-built research, revisions and Multimeter results, the existing generator and main service panel are capable of powering the proposed equipment and service panels. Utilizing a spare circuit in the main panel, a 200A 3-pole 277/480V breaker will be installed to power a proposed 100 KW ITS UPS to be housed in the first floor data center. The UPS will then power a 3-phase transformer which will then power two proposed service panels: ITS UPS 1 and ITS UPS 2 (See Appendix B for Electrical Plans).
