The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) is a major UK engineering institution Its activities encompass the whole materials cycle, from exploration and extraction, through characterisation, processing, forming, finishing and application, to product recycling and land reuse. It exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, Mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy, as a leading authority in the worldwide materials and mining community.

17 ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT FOR CEng An accredited Bachelors degree with honours in engineering or technology, plus either an appropriate Masters degree accredited by a professional engineering institution, or appropriate further learning to Masters level or an accredited integrated MEng degree For degrees started in 1999 or later

18 ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT FOR CEng - EARLIER Accredited BEng Hons Degree For degrees starting in 1998 BEng / BSc Hons Engineering Degree For degrees starting before 1983

19 ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT FOR IEng An accredited Bachelors or honours degree in engineering or technology or a Higher National Certificate or Diploma or a Foundation Degree in engineering or technology, plus appropriate further learning to degree level or an NVQ4 or SVQ4 which has been approved for the purpose by a licensed engineering institution For degrees started in 1999 or later

21 ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT FOR EngTech there are a variety of educational routes which meet the educational requirements. These include; National Certificates and Diplomas, NVQs or SVQs at level 3, a full engineeringrelated Modern Apprenticeship programme. Potential candidates are advised to contact the Institute to discuss.

Keeps the member up-to-date re regulations Helps the employee to become registered and in some cases further demonstrates the company commitment to staff development It gives something back often cited Provides a consistent approach Aids Professional Development in company in a proactive way

37 MENTORING Mentor should be at least MIMMM CEng Preferably not the Boss! Regular Meetings every 3-6 months Keep a Record Guidelines being re-written! Company Scheme?

38 WHAT S INVOLVED? Regular contact with your mentees does not have to be face to face Be familiar with the current regulations eg UK SPEC and application process Understand the Competences required, assist in identifying any gaps( using the Checklist we produce) and how within the constraints of the business these may be plugged and over what time frame Should not be too onerous or time consuming
