1 Queensborough Community College Electrical & Computer Engineering Technology Department MSDNAA Version 2006 Acquiring License and software from MSDNAA for Electrical and Computer Engineering Students Introduction The Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology Department at Queensborough Community College is a member of the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance. As a member of MSDNAA, students have access to variety of Microsoft software packages made available by the ECET department. Each ECET student will be able to acquire a valid product key and build their own copy of the Retail software from MSDNAA. To facilitate the acquisition of the product, students will be given access to the ECET server Student Courseware resource. From there they can build the CD or DVD CDROM. Your instructor will submit your name for registration to the MSDNAA program. Each registered student in the class will be receiving an from MSDNAA with the following message in the subject line: Welcome to MSDN Academic Alliance: Online Software System. Your instructor will supply you with additional vital information. This manual is divided into section. Below is an index of the topics. 2 Acquiring the License and Product Key Your key to accessing the available software is an you will receive from the MSDNAA e-academy License Management System from User Import The will contain your username and password to access Microsoft ELMS web site. A link to the ELMS login home page will be found in the . Once you log-in to ELMS, you will be able to shop for software packages which are free or at an extremely discounted price. Once electronically purchased, you will receive the license and product key for the programs selected. The actual copy of the programs will be distributed or reproduced in your class. Additional software packages can also be purchased and can be paid online. These products will be shipped to you directly from Microsoft. Your instructor will notify you what additional supplies are needed. The software you receive is intended for your use only. You may install it on your own home computer but do not duplicate or distribute the software to others. The program will be needed to complete your class work. You must bring the software with you whenever your class meets. In addition, you must bring a printout of your that contains your license and the product key to class. 4 You can access the MSDNAA home page by either clicking on the link in your or by entering the web site link to the MSDNAA ELMS server: in the Internet browsers address box. To begin the process press the Log In button Enter your username which is typically going to be your full address. Example: Enter your password exactly as it appeared in the . Be careful, the password is case sensitive. Press the Log Me In button. To access the available software, press the Software button. 5 A list of available software will be displayed. Your instructor will tell you which ones to select. You may acquire all the software packages listed. Highlight the product or select it from the pull down list. Remember you are purchasing product keys or licenses to the software not the actual program. You will build the product CD or DVD later. 7 Enter your first and last name as it appears on your college ID. Enter either your Queensborough address or your personal address. You may select to receive MSDN Student Flash news. Press the Next button. Your order will be displayed. Press on the title name of your software package to reveal additional information such as product keys or how to download the software. Make sure you print a copy of this page, Your product key will be displayed and any other additional directions. Make sure you print a copy of this page. You will need your Serial number to install the software. A confirmation will be sent to you. Don t forget to Log Out This completes the MSDNAA software acquisition transaction. 8 Building Product CD or DVD CDROM As previously mention, your instructor will either supply you with a Blank CDR, CDRW, DVD-R or DVD-RW disk or require you to bring them in. In order to build the CDROM disk, you will need to log onto the ETServer with the appropriate classroom username and password to gain access to the ISO images of the programs. If your instructor has a master program CD or DVD, the student can use a CD / DVD duplicating program to copy the CDROM, otherwise follow the direction below. 1. Using the computers in your classroom log in with the following username and password: Username: Room number_students Password: student (the password is case sensitive) Here are some examples of usernames: Room T14 T14_Students Room S118 S118_Students Room T24 T24_Students 2. Open the My Computer folder and verify that you can open the S: drive, Student Courseware. 3. Open the S: drive. From there open the folder labeled Student Software. 4. Open the folder labeled MSDNAA ISO 5. Open the folder that contains the software you wish to build. Warning, not all computer systems in the ECET department are capable of building DVD CDROM disks. 6. Double click on the ISO file of the CDROM product you wish to build. Typically this will start the Roxio CDROM copy program. An ISO file has the extension ISO at the end of the name. Example: MS_Program_EN_DVD.ISO 7. Insert a Blank CD or DVD CDROM disk into the drive and close the drive door. Allow the system a moment to recognize the drive. The type of CDROM needed is based on the size of the ISO file. 8. Press the Copy button. Follow all screen directions. Do not execute any other programs while this process is taking place. 9. The process takes approximately 10 to 30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the ISO and the write speed of the media. When the product has been built, the completed message will appear and the CDROM is typically be ejected. 10. Carefully remove the CDROM. Mark the label side of the disk using a felt tip pen. Write each item on a separate line: MSDNAA, QCC-ECET, Name of the program, Enter your product key and the last line should contain your full name. 11. Close all opened program windows. Optional: To verify the CDROM, insert it into the drive and close the drive door. A window may request which user can run the program as. Select your log-in username then press the OK button. If this disk is working the program will either try to open the install dialog screen or open a folder to display its contents. 12. Close all program windows and remove the CDROM. Place the CDROM is a storage container. Remember you are bound by the license you agreed on from MSDNAA. This program is intended for your use only. You may load it on your personal computer only.
