1 Section I Downloading VS 2013 Professional Edition from DreamSpark Website 1) Open your browser 2) Go to the DreamSpark website You can find the link to go to this website at (instructor s website) or copy and paste this entire URL here d8897&vsro=8&JSEnabled=1 3) Use the address and the password that was given to you by the CNIT Department in City College during the previous semester. If you do not remember the password, you should try to Sign In and mark that you Forgot the Password the password will then be sent to the address used to create your login (the official address used by City College at that time). If you are not sure, contact the instructor. 4) After you login, click on the link (menu) on the left side Developer Tools and you will find, among the many software there, the Visual Studio 2013 (see the picture below showing the Developer Tools link and the Visual Studio 2013 (the order of the software link might be a little bit different at the time you access this page) 5) The next page will show the many versions of MS Visual Studio 2013 and even some updates that you will need to install. The first one is the Ultimate Version and this is the one you will choose. See picture below showing the Add to Cart button you would need to select:

2 6) On the next screen, click on the Checkout button 7) The next page will show the User Guidelines and the Agreement scroll down the page and click on the I Accept button 8) Verify your name and that the amount to pay is equal 0 (zero dollars) and then click on Proceed with Order 9) You can print the receipt page for your records (or send via by using the orange envelope icon) or you can simply click on the Start Download button (see picture below). The red arrow shows the Product Key and this is important to have when installing the software! 10) You will see the page with the following steps to download the software (see picture below) If you have already installed any software from DreamSpark and have already downloaded in your Computer the SDM (Secure Download Manager), you can go straight to Step 2. Otherwise, you will need to download SDM, install it and only then you will be able to click on Step 2.

3 11) When you click on Step 2, the.sdx will be downloaded and when you click to open it, the Windows OS will show a screen for you so you can confirm that you want to open/execute the SDX file using the SDM (Secure Download Manager) that you downloaded and installed in Step 1 the picture beside here shows the little screen that came to my computer display, after I downloaded SDX file and double-clicked on it to open it my computer is running Windows 10! I just needed to click on the OK button you see as I had already installed the Secure Download Manager SDM in my computer before. 12) When you execute the SDX file, a screen like the one below will open: 13) Click on the Start Download button please, choose the first Start Download button as this will give to you the.iso file that you will then burn on a DVD to install Visual Studio from the DVD. The second Start Download button would give an.exe file (Web Installer) but most of the time it will give you a lot of trouble to install from that.exe file (compatibility problems). When you click on the Start Download button, it will start downloading the.iso file to your computer (it will download to the default location of downloads you have set for your browser). You will then find the following file in your computer see in the picture below the.iso file I found in my computer at that point, the Start Download button will become a Launch button but all it will do is to take you to the.iso file (it will NOT start the installation automatically for you).

4 14) As mentioned in the previous step, if you click on the Launch button, you will just be directed to the folder where your.iso file is located. Which means that you will need to burn a DVD with that.iso file

5 Section II Creating an installation DVD using Image Burn software You need to have a DVD for this process. This cannot be done on a CD! If you prefer to have the DVD ready for you, you will need to set up an appointment with me to get the DVD BUT THE PART RELATED TO SECTION I (up to the Checkout of the product in DreamSpark) YOU WILL NEED TO DO IN ORDER TO GET THE PRODUCT KEY THAT WILL BE UNIQUE FOR YOU! 1) After you have the.iso file saved, you can double-click on it if you have a DVD burner in your computer and, by default, the software of image burner will open for you in my computer, running Windows 10, I have Power2Go Software and after I insert a clean DVD in my DVD drive and selected from the software to Burn on Disc, this is the screen I got (see here on the side). I checked the Verify recorded data box just to make sure that the image will be burned on the disc correctly. You can also follow the steps, to burn a DVD, from this website if you are using a Windows computer. If you are using a Mac, to burn the DVD with the.iso file, you can follow the steps from this website - 2) Then, you should click on Burn the DVD will be prepared for you if you check the Verify recorded data, the process will be longer but you need to wait until the end of it and the DVD should be ejected automatically at the end of the process

6 Section III Installing Visual Studio 2013 Professional Edition 1) If you insert the DVD and the installation does not start automatically, then you will need to locate the.exe file inside the DVD (see picture here on the side), you will see the.exe file and you just need to double click on it to start the installation. 2) When you start the installation, a first screen will be shown and you need to click on checkbox that says I agree to the License Terms and Privacy Policy and only then the Next button will be shown on the right bottom part of that initial screen. You can uncheck the box about Joining the Visual Studio Experience Improvement if you want to. Click on the Next button to really start the installation. 3) The next screen will show the list of features to install having most of them check marked you should just click the Install button on the bottom right side of that screen to move on. 4) The screen shown here is the one shown while the installation occurs with the progress bars. Let the installation proceed while you just wait. 5) You may get a screen, at the end of the installation with some warnings but you should be able to open Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate Edition. 6) When you open for the first time, you will be invited to Sign In you can click on Not Now, Maybe Later right below the Sign In button. 7) You will then choose the Development Settings we can choose the Web Development (do not choose the Web Development (Code Only). On that screen you can also choose the color theme you want to use in your Visual Studio. See image below:

7 8) After you make your choices on the previous screen, click on Start Visual Studio button you will receive a message on a screen that it s preparing the software for you and that it might take some minutes 9) The next screen will the Start Page of Visual Studio and you are then ready to use it see image below: 10) You will now be able to find, among your programs, the Visual Studio 2013 when you want to reopen it. You will be able to use the software for some days as a trial version and that s why you need to print the product key that you get from DreamSpark because after the trial days, a window will open like the one shown below, when you open Visual Studio 2013: You should then click on the Change my product license link (very close to the bottom of that screen) and then type the product key you received from DreamSpark and click the Apply button. Only after that step, you will be able to use Visual Studio 2013 indefinetely.
