12 TRAFFIC PROGRAM Counts are taken to record the number of vehicles passing a point or entering an intersection. Counts are samples of actual volumes. The counts are taken by vehicles passing over road tubes that are fastened to the roadway. The road tube actuates a pressure switch on the count recorder to which the tube is attached. Each two actuations count as one vehicle. The counts taken are factored to equate the count to an average daily traffic count, which is defined as the total volume for 65 days divided by 65. This factoring takes into account the month and day of the week the count was taken, due to fluctuations in traffic volumes over the year. The counts are summarized in the Traffic Count Program Guide in the following manner: PEAK HOUR 4 HOUR 4 HOUR TOTAL STREET LOCATION DIR LANE PEAK HOUR PEAK HOUR Refers to the number on the map in the guide that corresponds to the location of the count. Refers to the street where the count was taken. The cross streets between which the count was taken. Direction of travel of vehicles for count, i.e. northbound. Number of through lanes for the direction of travel for which the count is being taken. The volume of traffic for the hour with the heaviest traffic. The hour of the heaviest traffic. The date that the traffic count was taken. 4 HOUR The volume of traffic at the location for a 4-hour period. 4 HOUR Equates the actual count taken to an average daily traffic volume by taking into account seasonal and weekday factors. TOTAL The sum of the counts of the two directions for the specific location.
