3 1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW Giga 8000 series is the new generation of drilling machines adopting several concepts of the machine tools and this explains the name of drilling cell. The structure of the machine is based on welded steel used on the cross beam and on the basement. The traditional PLURITEC split axes on X and Y movement provides the best accuracy to the table positioning. The machine is designed for the future demand of high volume PCB, both Double Side and Multilayer; as a matter of fact 8 heads are simultaneously running with independent Z axis on the same part number. Multitool is based on the innovative concept of a CLIP holding 14 collarless or collared bits. The operator will manage either the clip or the complete multitool with his fingers, but not each drill bit anymore. This is very important because in this way the bit handling has been eliminated. An innovative and exclusive tool management is also available on Giga 8000 series drilling cell for a better utilization of the drill bits. 2. GIGA 8000 SERIES BASE MACHINE COMPOSITION CONTROL UNIT Sieb & Meyer CNC multitasking control. BASEMENT Welded steel X AXIS MOVEMENT A brushless servo-motor directly linked to a preloaded high accuracy lead screw drives the table up to 25m/min (984 /min) with an acceleration of 5 m/sec x sec (118 /s 2 ). Movement is guided by high precision grade linear bearing. Positioning accuracy: +/ mm (+/ ) is granted by linear scale with mm ( ) resolution. Y AXIS MOVEMENT The cross beam is driven by brushless servo-motor, linked to a preloaded high accuracy ball screw. The maximum speed is 25m/min (984 /min) with an acceleration of 3 m/sec x sec (118 / s 2 ). Movement is guided by high precision grade linear bearing. Positioning accuracy: +/ mm (+/ ) linear scale with mm ( ) resolution. Edition: May 2000 Technical Specifications Page 1 of 7
4 Z AXIS MOVEMENT 8 fully independent axes drive the 8 spindles with digital feed back. Brushless servo-motor are linked to high accuracy lead screw: feed rate 25 m/min (984 /min) acceleration 20 m/sec x sec (787 / s 2 ) vertical stroke 25 mm (0.98 ) 3. DRILLING HEADS (BASE MACHINE) SPINDLES High speed West Wind air bearing spindle 1331 full range power, programmable from 18,000 to 125,000 R.P.M. for microdrilling and for normal drilling. West Wind 1531 for 150,000 R.P.M. is also available.** Maximum static run-out at 20 mm (0.8 ) from the collet: mm ( ). The machine is equipped with one security air tank granting the deceleration of the spindles when sudden lack of air pressure occurs. ** If the machine is equipped with WW 1351, its composition include two cooling unit and two converter. BROKEN BIT DETECTOR (BBD) (BASE MACHINE) BBD is included in the standard configuration and detects the bit presence before any drilling. The same BBD performs the tool pick-up/lay-down control during the tool change. An automatic air blowing device keeps the sensor clean during the running time. DRILL BIT TEST (BASE MACHINE) In the standard configuration a tool too long device is included. A laser device is also available as option for the measurement of: - dynamic run-out - tool height - tool diameter When the drill bit reaches the end of its pre-set tool life, automatic tool change to the next magazine is effected. SMART Z (BASE MACHINE) The special pressure foot group automatically recognizes the stack height and consequently adapts and maintains distance from the surface of the stack according to the quote previously set in the CNC. 5 EXHAUST CONTROL PROBE (BASE MACHINE) A special pneumatic sensor located in the extraction tube of each drilling head detects if any vacuum fault occurs. In such a case an electrical signal is sent to the CNC which provides to stop the machine immediately. 4. TOOLING PLATES (BASE MACHINE) The peculiar position of the stacks on the Giga 8000 series table allows the operator to manually load and unload the 8 stacks from the front side of the machine. The same position will allow the shortest automatic stack loading/unloading time because two rows of 4 stacks each provide the easiest way to the transversal movement of the stacks through the machine table (patent pending). The stacks are provided with 2 centerline pins for the best zero reference on the table. Two centerline pin locations are well established world-wide as the best process for Multilayer boards because all previous X Ray optimizing process provide the two reference holes as well as the antirotation one. A V block for first reference pin locking and a sliding bar for the second pin locking grant the stability of the stack position on the table. Moreover, before starting any program, each head provides a pressure on each stack already locked on the table for perfect horizontal positioning. WORKING AREA On all 8 stations the longitudinal run is 570 mm (22.5 ) while the transversal run is 720 mm (28.3 ). On 4 stations it is possible to drill a great stack of 720 mm (28.3 ) x 1067 mm (42 ). Edition: May 2000 Technical Specifications Page 3 of 7
6 5. MULTITOOL SYSTEM (BASE MACHINE) A sole flat multitool manages both collarless (standard configuration) and collared bits. PLURITEC strongly suggest the use of the collarless tools due to the low RUN-OUT at the microdrilling rotation per minute value. Four flat multitools are necessary for eight heads; this means that one multitool serves two heads simultaneously. It is standard available a turn-up flat multitool version in order to easily manage the drill bits on machine. In its base configuration the giga 8000 series has 294 bits per head. Optionally the number may be increased to 588 per head with four additional flat multitools (8 in total). The bits are hold by a plastic STRIP of exclusive PLURITEC design. One strip hold 14 bits, and it can be easily managed by the operator without using his fingers anymore for bit loading and unloading. This concept means a great step ahead on the drill bit handling The standard EUROSTRIP holding 11 bits only is also usable on request. 6. TRAFFIC LIGHT MULTITOOL MANAGEMENT (BASE MACHINE) PLURITEC includes as standard feature for Giga 8000 series a tool management package of great help to the operator in the handling of the multitool. Three sections are available on one multitool: -section A, holding new and freshly resharpened bits only -section B, holding one bit per most common diameters (partially used bits) -section C, holding totally used bits only, ready to be resharpened. At the beginning A and B sections are fully loaded by the operator. During the drilling cycle A will decrease and C will increase, while B section is stable. At the end of the cycle A is empty, C is full of bits ready for resharpening and B is still full with one partially used bit per diameter. The operator simply has to load A at first and unload C at the end. 7. SIEB & MEYER CNC DESCRIPTION (BASE MACHINE) The multitasking basic concept allows several things to be done at once: while the machine is drilling a certain code, another part program can be downloaded, edited and transferred from/to the host computer. The central unit has two Motorola MC processors operating fully independently and in parallel. The 1st processor (main processor) does the storage management, the data activation and realizes all logic functions for controlling the machine. The 2nd processor (axes processor) controls the position control loops for X and Y axes plus 6 Z axes (with the possibility of managing the depth control). 7 The CNC comes standard with 2 MB memory, two 3½" floppy disk drives plus one 5¼. A static frequency converter is included for driving high speed spindles up to RPM. The control is interfaced to the drilling machine and fully incorporated to reduce the bulk of the whole drilling unit. CNC can easily dialogue with the Ethernet network through a really powerful Pluritec DNC Sieb & Meyer CNC control system consisting of: - CPU with two microprocessors (MC 68000) operating fully independently - 2 MB memory - 3½" micro floppy disk drive plus one 5¼ - 10" colour monitor - Keyboard - Power supply unit arranged in a separate rack in order to allow easy retrofitting option - Solid state frequency converter SOFTWARE FEATURES OF SIEB & MEYER CNC CONTROL - ISO/EIA metric/inch input format. - Powerful editor with programming aids and help functions logical and 2100 physical T-functions available. - File names with 32 characters. - Optimization of machine accuracy. - "String Search" function. - Part programs compression. - Synoptic monitor display of program and machine status. - Peck drilling. - Nibbling (drilling of linear and circular slots) - Quick command (Z stroke optimization). - Point to point circular and linear interpolation. - Control homing with movable zero points. - Selective zero points management system. - Nested step and repeat in 5 levels. - Mirror image, 90, 180 and 270 degrees rotation. - Programmed Macro functions with ability to store patterns and lines of hole routines. - Capability to repeat holes, stored patterns, step commands and customer defined patterns. - Skip functions (holes, tool sizes, and step and repeat patterns). - Tool link/maximum hit count fully programmable. - Freely selectable grid. - Stretch and shrink mode with separate scaling factors for both X and Y axes in step of 1%. - Special softwares for Excellon, Trudril, Posalux and Wessel formats are available as option. Z AXIS DEPTH CONTROL (OPTION) When the machine is equipped with the depth control option (Pluritec patent), blind holes or buried vias are drilled within a depth tolerance of ±15 microns (±0.59 mils). The system assumes the surface of the board to be drilled as reference for drilling depth. This option does not work with stack automatic loading \unloading option. 9. CONSUMABLE KIT OF SPARE PARTS (OPTION) A specific kit of consumable spare parts is available according to the machine configuration. The kit is established according to the normal condition of the machine in one year (based on three shifts), provided that preventive maintenance and environment cleaning (air pressure, dry air and so on) are within the standard specification.
