2 3D Scanners and Software Training 1 Z Corporation offices in Burlington, Massachusetts. In December 2009 two persons of the FLAAR staff, together with FLAAR director, attended a special three-day 3D scanner training course at Z Corp, where they learned how to handle the portable ZScanner 800 and how to process the data from it. They came back to Guatemala with a ZScanner 800 and a HP laptop with one licensed copy of Geomagic installed; both lent from Z Corp for 90 days. Since then, our team in Guatemala has scanned several native fruits and vegetables for our Mayan ethnobotany projects and visited archaeological sites for a scanning session of the sculptures and artifacts. 3 3D Scanners and Software Training 2 These are some of the objects used to demonstrate how to do 3D scanning. The scanner needs the targets to position itself in the space and the targets can be pasted on the object itself or in boards, like the ones shown in the picture, to place the object. If the targets are on the object, it can be moved, but if the targets are on a board the object cannot be moved until the scanning session is finished. 4 3D Scanners and Software Training 3 The targets most be placed randomly at about one to three inches from each other. This is a red pepper we tryed to scan but it was hard for the scanner because it is too shiny. In such cases you can apply some powder.

7 3D Scanners and Software Training 6 Since we are interested in researching for Maya archaeology and ethnobotany, we brought from Guatemala a pataxte pod for scanning it. The pataxte is what is left after removing the cacao inside which is the fruit from where the chocolate is made. This one was left to dry and we wanted to know how much of the details could the scanner capture. Nicholas Hellmuth holding the pataxte lid for scanning.

8 3D Scanners and Software Training 7 The pataxte pod was scanned in high resolution in several pieces because the scanner uses most of the computer memory specially in high resolution, so it was practically impossible to do it from one scan, when the computer runs out of memory it just shuts down. But the scanner software indicates with colors how much memory you are using, and when it s getting to red it s better to stop scanning. 9 3D Scanners and Software Training 8 If the targets cannot be placed on the object, or the object cannot be placed on a base the solution is to use nets with targets. The object you wish to scan is covered with the net. Normally the targets wont appear as surfaces on the scans. You just have to be careful not to move it, because then the scanner would loose the points of reference. Sample of a net for scanning objects, and the closeup.

11 3D Scanners and Software Training 10 Since we will be developing several 3D scanning projects, we thought it would be necessary to be well equiped. So, we bought at Z Corp the HP computer, to the left, wich meets the requirements for using the scanner. We already owned the Panasonic computer, to the right, and we installed the ZScanner 800 software, so that we would not have to rely only in one computer to use the scanner. This is the ZScanner 800 suitcase. It is designed to accomodate and protect the scanner and its accessories
